Vehicle Detail
This isn't going to get any cheaper and it won't be listed again. I will repeat I have seen these in worse shape bring more money, not even running at all. It makes no sense this does not sell, at this point it's worth more parted out and scrapped. Watched one a lot like it sell today at a NY State surplus auction and bring $1400 and all they do is start them and move them back and forth about five feet, if they'll go. This 1985 Chevrolet Suburban was built for the US Air Force. A basic model, it doesn't even have a factory radio. After retirement by the USAF it went to a town highway department who used it for a mowing crew before selling it surplus to me about five years ago. I sold it to a friend who has since lost interest and has asked me to sell it again for him. He's had it stored inside for over a year. The truck runs excellent. It's 2WD auto with a TH400 trans. The rear gears are a 3.73 open. It has a class III hitch. Two seats inside and barn doors at the back (I believe this does have the provisions for a third seat). The body is decent with only some minor rust in a few spots. It shows as a 3/4 ton 2500 but it's a heavy 3/4 with 8-lug wheels and the 14-bolt semi-floater rearend more typical of one ton trucks. It has the following problems: The biggest is it was sold to me as having a bad transmission - the TH400 has a weak high/reverse band. While the fluid is full and not burned, it will not always go into reverse. Outside of this, the interior is rough (mostly dash pad and front seat uhpolstery, rest is ok); the windshield is cracked; the left front floorpan and rocker have some rot in them (as do the inner wheel houses in a couple spots, nothing major), and it's developed a fuel leak somewhere near the tank. The truck can be driven as is, and was driven around at the Syracuse Nationals in July. Currently it also will move in reverse, at least on level ground. However, when I had it I bought a second diesel Suburban and stripped it for parts including a 700R4 transmission with about 10K on a rebuild per the guy I got it from. I took all the related parts to swap this over from one to the other, which requires the crossmember be moved forward about four inches (the holes are already there). I also saved the windshield. In addition to this, there are spares for: The entire exhaust system. Injector pump, intake, starter, alternator, radiator, and some other engine parts. A decent replacement dashpad and some other interior pieces (the parts truck had the fancier interior). A donor section of rocker panel and floorboard. A tilt steering column. I'm sure I've left out a few things, but just to go to a you-pick yard and buy all the same pieces at those low prices would set you back around $300-$400. I also have the front seat from this other truck I used in a third Suburban available seperately if desired. It comes with like new tires that came on it when I got it - I used them for a short time on another vehicle. It also includes a fuel cap I modified with a tire valve so you can pressurize the fuel system when it sits and push the fuel up to the injector pump (just a few PSI does it). It appears the USAF changed the rear doors at some point, as they have electric defoggers on the glass, but there is no switch or control to operate them. But the paint matches 100%. Other than not having the 24V battery system, this is mechanically more or less the same as Military M1009 CUCV Blazers. These are also ideal trucks to convert to run on vegetable oil or other alternative fuels. Heck, you can even dump your waste oil in and burn it. With the price of gasoline these days it may be worth having the option to have a truck you can burn other fuels in. This can be seen by appointment only, as it's stored indoors, email for contact information to take a look. It can be driven. It has a clear title. For an additional fee my friend said he'd be willing to just have the transmission in it repaired, as well. I've seen these listed and sell for good money that have sat for years and do not run; it's priced not much more than it would have brought for scrap a few weeks ago. He'd like to move on and I'd like to see this sell to someone who can do something with it. We'll give you up to 30 days to come get it and more time can be negotiated then, or at time of sale. Local delivery may be possible as well. Any questions, feel free to email or call Jeff (315) 679-2384. No reserve on this - we want it to sell. From what I can see it's priced fairly for what it is - a truck that can easily be fixed and get a lot of work and use out of, and that could be converted to alternative fuels to beat the high price of diesel or gas. It's not perfect and not being sold as perfect.
