3/11/2009: WHAT IS TOYOTA RECALL???
The Toyota recall is a series of automobile recalls under the Toyota brand name. The primary reasons for recall are sudden unintended acceleration (SUA), due to sticking accelerators, and braking problems caused by anti-lock software, found in Toyota hybrids.
Timeline
- September 26, 2007- 55,000 Camrys and ES 350 all-weather cars recalled for floor mat problem
- September 29, 2009- Toyota says that they will recall 3.8 million U.S. vehicles because of floor mat problems. Company insists that there is no "vehicle based cause."
- October 5, 2009- Toyota first addresses sticking accelerator problem (called Sticking Accelerator Pedal by Toyota). Reported in Toyota's Defect Information Report
- November 2, 2009- Recall of Toyota and Lexus automobiles, to correct out-of-place floor mat (driver's side mat) that's jamming the pedal.
- November 26, 2009- Floor mat recall amended to include "brake override." (4.2 million vehicles recalled)
- January 21, 2010- Toyota recall for mechanical issue concerning sticking of the accelerator pedal (2.3 million recalled). Caused Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA)
- January 26, 2010- Toyota claims to "temporarily suspend sales" of vehicles such as Corolla and Camry to fix sticking gas pedals.
- January 27, 2010- 1.1 million automobiles recalled (added to their amended floor mat recall).
- January 28, 2010- Toyota announces recall of about 5.2 million vehicles for pedal entrapment problem, 2.3 million for accelerator pedal issue, 1.7 million affected by both. Certain related Lexus and Pontiac models were also subject to issues.
- January 29, 2010- 1.8 million recalled in Europe, 75,000 recalled in China, 9 million worldwide (as of Jan. 29, 2010).
- February 5, 2010- Akio Toyoda (Toyota's CEO) apologizes, at a press conference, for the recall of over 9 million Toyota automobiles.
- February 8, 2010- Worldwide: 436,000 hybrid vehicles recalled for braking problems. 200 reports of Prius brake defects. 7,300 MY 2010 Camrys recalled for potential brake tube problems (in the U.S.).
- February 10, 2010- Akio Toyoda (Toyota's CEO) announces that he plans to come to the U.S. to better handle the crisis.
- February 12, 2010- 8,000 MY 2010 4WD Tacoma pick-up trucks recalled in the U.S., for possible glitches in front drive shafts.
- February 17, 2010- Began investigation of Corolla's steering problems. Akio Toyoda (Toyota's CEO) decides that he will not be coming to the U.S. Instead, Yoshimi Inaba (the head of Toyota North America) will be called to Congress about the recalls and halting sales. However, Akio Toyoda will consider speaking to members of Congress, if asked to.
- February 24, 2010- Toyota announces full confidence in recall repairs. They will "continue to monitor other contributing factors" for SUA (mechanical, electronics, driver error)
1/26/2009: Toyota announced it would recall 2.3 million vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals on specific Toyota Division models. The make models are listed below:
- Certain 2009-2010 RAV4 (VIN not starts with "J")
- Certain 2009-2010 Corolla (VIN not starts with "J")
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- Certain 2007-2010 Camry (VIN not starts with "J")
- Certain 2010 Highlander (VIN not starts with "J")
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia
