Nineteen fifty-seven marked the first year of the fifth generation Series 62 models. This particular example left the factory in either Detroit, Michigan or South Gate, California painted in Buckskin Beige (code 44) with Light Sahara Pattern Cloth and Light Beige Leather interior (code 44). Since then, it has been redone in white over red, both inside and out. The current color scheme is quite eye-catching, however there are some blemishes scattered around the body – on the roof, at the left rear door and fender, at the left front fender and on the hood. In addition, the right rear glass has a pit in it. The other glass panels are in very good order. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, its engine bay is tidy, the battery appears new and the Dagmar front and chrome rear bumpers are in better-than-average condition. As originally conceived by Harley Earl, GM vice president of design, the conical bumper guards would mimic artillery shells. Placed inboard of the headlights on front bumpers of Cadillacs, they were intended to both convey the image of a speeding projectile and protect vehicles’ front ends in collisions. As the 1950s wore and American automakers’ use of chrome grew more flamboyant, they grew more pronounced. The black rubber tips they gained on the 1957 the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and other models were known as pasties. This Caddy rolls on BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall radials, size 235/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire surrounds a factory wheel cover. The tires are in very good order while the wheel covers are in satisfactory shape. Under hood is a 365 CID V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor and mated to a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include E-Z Eye tinted glass, a heater, power steering, power brakes, power six-way front seat, power windows and an aftermarket Autronic Eye Inside, the red-and white front and bench seats, each with a fold-down center armrest, are in very good overall condition. The black carpet looks great while the contrasting white headliner is in satisfactory order. The two-spoke steering wheel is in better-than-average condition, as are the inner door panels and metal dashboard. Rounding out the interior is a factory AM radio. For 1957, a tubular X-frame without side rails was adopted. This resulted in lower body without a loss of usable space. Front end styling was marked by rubber bumper guard tips and dual circular lamps set into the lower bumper section. Side trim was revised and a dual taillight theme was used. Identifying the standard 62 models were bright metal moldings, just forward of the rear wheel openings, highlighted by seven horizontal wind slits. At the upper end this fender brake trim joined a horizontal molding that ran along a conical flare extending towards both taillamps. A crest medallion was seen on the forward angled rear fins. De Villes had special nameplates on the front fenders. Series 62 Eldorados (as distinct from the Series 70 Eldorado Brougham) were further distinguished by the model name above a V-shaped rear deck ornament and on the front fenders. The rear fender and deck contour was trimmed with broad, sculptured stainless steel beauty panels. Also seen were “shark” style fins pointing towards the back of the cars. A three-section built-in front bumper was another exclusive trait of the Series 62 Eldorados, which came with a long list of standard features. Competition to this Cadillac in 1957 included Buick’s Series 60 Century Riviera Four-door Sedan, Chrysler’s New Yorker Four-door Sedan, DeSoto’s Fireflite Four-door Sedan, Lincoln’s Premiere Landau Four-door Sedan, Mercury’s Monterey Phaeton Four-door Sedan, Oldsmobile’s Starfire 98 Holiday Four-door Sedan and Packard’s Clipper Town Sedan. If you’re a Cadillac collector, if you appreciate a fine mid-20th century luxury automobile or if you’re just intrigued by the Dagmar bumper, please stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to inquire about this vehicle. This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 53,751 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title.
