During Prince Motor Company’s existence, they produced a line of cars called the “Skyline”. The Skyline model line included luxury sedans, sport coupes, station wagons, and convertibles. In the 1960’s, Motorsport was gaining popularity in Japan; with Honda involved in developing the Suzuka Circuit and Mitsubishi involved in developing the Fuji Speedway. Prince witnessed the increasing popularity of motorsport all around Japan and wanted a piece of the pie to boost its sales. In 1964, Prince entered their new S54 Skyline 2000 GT in the second Japanese Grand Prix, hoping to prove the performance potential of the car's new G-7 straight-6 engine. Surprisingly to Prince, there was a privately entered Porsche 904 GTS race car that was faster and more powerful than the Skyline in all aspects. The mid-engine Porsche 904 took first place, but the Skyline sedan was still able to do pretty well, taking 2nd to 6th place, ahead of the MGs, Lotus Elans, Datusun Fairlady Roadsters, and Isuzu Bellet GTs. In 1966, the Japan Grand Prix moved to the newly built Fuji Speedway and Prince had the opportunity to beat the Porsche 904. Porsche however retired the 904 and introduced the new 906 which had more horsepower, better aerodynamics, and was lighter than its predecessor. Despite the advantages of the Porsche, the Prince R380 prototype racecar went on to win the Japan Grand Prix due to its reliability. The achievement of a small car manufacturer like Prince in motorsport put it in the spotlight in Japan and got the attention of the much larger Nissan Motor Corporation. Shortly after the Grand Prix win, Prince and Nissan merged together as a strategic partnership to catch up to Toyota. The Prince organization remained in existence inside Nissan, but the Prince name was dropped. In the summer of 1968, Nissan introduced the new C10 series of Skylines under its name. In the autumn of 1968, Nissan introduced the PGC10 Skyline 2000 GT-R sedan at the Tokyo Motor Show. In February 1969, the GT-R officially launched and was advertised alongside the R380 race car to showcase the Skyline’s racing roots. Nissan created the GT-R in order to win races, and they were hugely successful with the GT-R sedan scoring 33 straight victories and the GT-R coupe stretched that to 50 total victories. It outpaced all of its racing competition: Toyota Corona 1600 GT, Isuzu Bellet GTR, Mazda R100, Mazda RX-2, and even Porsche 911. Nissan truly epitomized the phrase “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday.” The GT-R’s success on the racetrack made it very popular amongst Japanese consumers. They public even gave it the nickname “Hakosuka,” loosely translated as “Boxy Skyline. But not everybody could afford the GT-R, so Nissan wanted to introduce a lower priced model. In September 1971, the KGC-10 2000 GT-X was introduced and received a 130hp 2.0 L L20SU straight-six engine instead of the 160hp 2.0L S20 engine found in the GT-R. Unfortunately for the Hakosuka, at the height of the 1973 oil crises, the demand for sports cars dropped significantly. Also due to stricter exhaust emission regulations, the production of the second generation fastback styled Kenmeri GT-R (KPGC110) was ended after only 4 months with 197 units produced. The GT-R badge would not be worn by any Skylines until the 1989 R32 GT-R. Fast forward to current day, the Hakosuka has become increasingly popular and rarer. Only 832 GT-R sedans and 1,197 GT-R coupes were produced with the prices increasing year over year reaching as high as $300,000. For many avid Hakosuka GT-R fans in Japan and around the world, the only way to attain their dream is to build a tribute car from a GT-X model which is the example being presented here for sale. Skyline 2000 GT-X: This 1972 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-X was recently imported to the US. It has been modified with GT-R style rear fender flares, GT-R badges, GT-R style rear decklid spoiler, fiberglass hood, and 14” Longchamp wheels. Power comes from a 2.0 liter L20SU inline-six engine that produces 130hp and is equipped with upgraded triple Mikuni carburetors mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Other modifications include stainless exhaust and a short shifter. It was recently serviced in Japan before it was exported. The car has received an exterior repaint at some point in its life in Japan, with some minor chips and cracks. This is a perfect candidate for daily driving or a restoration project. The interior of the trunk photos are with the spare removed. The engine fires right up without any hesitation. The brakes are in good working order. The clutch and gear shifts are smooth and fast. All the exterior lights and interior switches function properly. The odometer is only 5 digits and reads 05613 kilometers, which could mean it is actually 105,613 kilometers. The Japan export certificate indicates 03600km in 2016 and 01900km in 2014. The car has a straight frame and no rust on the chassis. This car will come with a Title and is smog exempt because of its year model.
