It fulfills the promise set forth last year by the introduction of an all-new Ram and now offers the power and capability expected in the three-quarter and one-ton segments, plus features, content, and capacities that in many ways raise the bar for this class of truck. Time and again, we gravitated to the Ram HD’s potent new V-8 Hemi, 8.0-liter V-10, and Cummins turbodiesel powertrains. We were impressed by the HD’s living-room-like interior, high feature content, and big-rig styling. The Ram exhibits fine driving manners, hauls a bed full of concrete blocks with ease, and pulls loaded trailers without breaking a sweat. Think of it as a burly lumberjack dressed in a tux. Available in three-quarter (2500) or one-ton (3500) variations, the fresh-from-the-ground-up HD sports a fully boxed, hydro- formed frame–the only player in this class to do so. It’s far stiffer, from a structural standpoint, than that of the previous-generation Ram, which contributes to lower noise/vibration/harshness levels and improved handling. The hydroforming process reduces the number of required welds, making a frame that should maintain its strength properties as the years roll by. Power isn’t an important factor for a Truck of the Year nominee–it’s critical. offers five powerhouses for the HD: two muscular gasoline engines and three turbodiesels. Standard fare for the 2500 and 3500 is the new 5.7-liter/345-horsepower Hemi Magnum V-8 mated to a NV4500 five-speed manual gearbox; a five-speed 5456RFE automatic is optionally available. A torque peak of 375 lb-ft at 4400 rpm helps the Hemi pull with the best of the midsize V-8s–especially in terms of 0-60 acceleration (posting an 8.1-second time in our 2500 Quad Cab 4×2 tester). With so much available low-end grunt, the Hemi has the right to claim best-in-class acceleration and towing. “Love the power and rumble this engine makes,” wrote Truck Trend Editor Mark Williams in the 2500’s logbook. “This is a truck engine.” Back for another tour of duty, the 8.0-liter/ 305-horsepower Magnum V-10 remains an option, with either a five-speed manual or automatic tranny. If you’re planning on hauling anything super substantial, yet still want the convenience of gasoline power, the V-10’s 450 lb-ft of torque provides ample twist to get the job done. “In torque school, diesels rule,” and the Dodge folks don’t disappoint. Three variations of the venerable 5.9-liter I-6 Cummins turbodiesel motivate the HD. A standard output model produces 250 horsepower/460 lb-ft of torque through an NV4500 HD five-speed manual or 47RE or 48RE four-speed automatic. Next up is the High Output, common-rail-injected 305-horsepower packing 555 lb-ft of mammoth torque. It boasts a 350K miles-to-overhaul interval. To harness that much power, Dodge pairs this engine with the NV5600 six-speed manual, replete with a 5.71:1 granny first gear (a heavy-duty version of the four-speed automatic will see its way to the HO diesel by mid-2003). With California’s stricter diesel-emission requirements, residents of the Golden State have a right to feel neglected, as they’re offered only the leftovers from last year: the 235-horse 460 lb-ft version of the low-pressure turbodiesel. The High Output Cummins definitely sounds mean and pulls hard when put to the test, posting a 12.3-second time to 60 and an 18.5-second/74.4-mph pass through the quarter mile. It was awesome to witness the second-gear burnout as all four rear tires spun at launch. “If you look up ‘torque’ in Webster’s,” commented Road Test Editor Chirico, “you’d see a picture of the High Output Cummins next to the definition.” Both three-quarter and one-ton Rams are available in 2WD and 4WD variants, in standard or Quad Cab configurations, with a manual transfer case for ST trim or electronically controlled cases for SLT and Laramie packages. We’re especially fond of the latter system, which allows the driver to choose from 2HI, 4HI Locked, and 4LOW Locked, depending upon road conditions or terrain, all by rotating a single dial on the dash. The system also affords a neutral position, allowing it to be slung behind an RV. Off the beaten path, the non-dually Ram easily tackles soft sand, scales shale-covered trails, and is a formidable rock crawler. Since the majority of Ram Heavy Duty pickups are ordered with four-wheel drive, the truckmaker aimed its sights on that segment. A revised version of the five-link, coil-sprung live axle handles the front, and longitudinal dual-stage leaf springs (three inches longer than last year’s) reduce spring stress, while providing a comfortable ride on-road, yet fully supporting cargo when loaded. The 3500-series trucks receive reduced spring rates for better rough-pavement ride, and auxiliary leaf springs support their full-rated load of 23,000 pounds (including trailer). Both variants offer relatively compliant rides, although the 3500 is a bit jouncy over harsh road surfaces when unladen. Adding a grand worth of weight to the bed smoothes it right out. The 2500 HD, demonstrating a distinct lack of axle hop normally found in this class of pickup, surprised even our resident truck experts. “The hydroformed frame is stiff enough to let me feel what the tires are doing, but it doesn’t seem unnecessarily harsh,” noted photog Newhardt. Vented front (13.9-inch) and solid rear (also 13.9-inch) disc brakes with ABS provide powerful, linear emergency stops from 60 mph in both models: 159 feet for the half-ton and 160 feet in the three-quarter-ton. In the ’80s and into the early ’90s, pickups were somewhat vanilla in the styling department. That all changed in ’94 when Dodge morphed the looks of a Kenworth onto the Ram, creating a true phenomenon in the truck world and taking home our Golden Calipers in the process. For ’03, Dodge designers pegged the design and engineering meter off the scale; the heavy-duty Ram has the most visually recognizable brand character of any pickup: bigger, bolder, and brasher. As Associate Editor Brian Vance penned, “It’s the SuperSize of pickups.” While some of our editors like the in-your-face look, others suggest that Dodge might have taken the image a bit too far. “The grille is 115 percent too large,” wrote Detroit Bureau Chief Keebler. Exec Editor Stone took the opposing view: “This ‘I wanna be a Kenworth’ look is a huge element of the Ram’s popularity.” Irrespective of the camp, all editors agreed the design is universally defining as a Ram. Senior shooter Kiewicz noted, “You’re going to either love or hate the Dodge’s styling, but regardless, you’re going to notice it.” Recreational towing has never been more popular, and the HD has been designed for pulling heavy loads with ease. Even in base 2500 regular-cab 2WD form, the Ram can carry 3330 pounds of payload and has a tow rating of 9550 pounds. Opt for the 3500 regular cab dually with the HO turbodiesel and four-speed automatic, and the rating jumps to a mammoth 16,400 pounds–that’s best in class, kids. When we dropped a 7000-pound 26-foot boat and trailer onto the tail of the 2500, the Hemi had no problem hauling the vessel up a seven-percent grade. In our standard-issue-loaded 0-60-mph test, it posted an impressive 10.3-second pull and 4.0 seconds in the 40-55-mph passing test. With the 3500 diesel powerplant providing the brawn, we loaded an 8800-pound 32-foot Sunsation Dominator on the hitch. A standstill to 60 mph came in at a respectable 16.4 seconds, and the passing test posted an easy 8.6. With both Rams, adding weight to the back of the bed was a no-brainer, and the effect on handling was about nil. Loading both Rams with half of their maximum payload, the 2500 lost any road harshness while driving bumpy stretches of asphalt; the 3500 felt heavier, but adding weight to the bed could be likened to adding a drop of water to the Pacific Ocean–it hardly made a difference. Unlike the previous-generation, the new Ram’s creature comforts are more evocative of an upscale hotel lobby than a truck interior. The dash pad and other ancillary items may be hard plastic, but colors, textures, fit, and finish are more what you might find in a sedan, rather than a work-duty truck. In both series, front-bucket seats hold you in place, with good lateral, lumbar, and thigh support. Cloth interiors may be cooler in summer and warmer in winter, but we enjoy the look and feel of Dodge’s leather-trimmed seats, which raise the posh level only a few notches. Both HDs lost points with their hard plastic trim (nearly every driver knocked it), but they easily won us back with the abundance of cubby spaces carved into the cabin. Of course, there are oversized cupholders and multiple powerpoints, but it’s the extra-wide center console/armrest that gets our nod: Not only does it contain its own powerpoint for concealed cell-phone charging, but also three individual dividers that keep pens, pencils, paper, and other incidentals segregated. No extended cab is available, which is a good thing: Trying to squeeze four stout construction workers into anything but a truck with four full-size doors is grounds for torture with a Sawzall. The rear of the HD is as plush as the front, though some of our editors found the rear seatback too upright. If you need more space inside, just flip the bench up and fold out the panels to make a flat floor. Like the ’94 Ram that redefined pickup-occupant protection with the first optional driver-side airbags. The ’03 HD Rams lead the way in safety with the first HD-pickup application of side-curtain airbags and pretensioning, constant-force seatbelt retractors. All outboard passengers get three-point seatbelts, and the LATCH child-restraint system is standard on all Heavy Dutys. With the increase in frame stiffness and passenger-compartment crumple zones, the new 2500 and 3500 are among the safest trucks on the market. Before you sign a contract purchasing or leasing that dream truck, however, you’d best ask yourself the value question: “Does this truck give me the best bang for the buck?” Unlike most compact daily-driver sedans, trucks (and especially heavy-duty models) are bought and used for the long haul. Most truck owners don’t ask, but demand their trucks be rugged, reliable, comfortable, feature rich, and perform as advertised at 100 as well as 100,000 miles on the clock. When adding up the HD Ram’s value equation, it scores big. 8 Photos For a mere $23,280, you get a well-equipped Regular Cab hauler, with chrome bumpers, tinted windows, the 5.7-liter Hemi engine, foldaway mirrors, air-conditioning, auxiliary powerpoints, under-seat compartment storage, over 3000 pounds of payload capacity, and a host of other goodies–and we’re talking about just the base model. There are 82 different model (and over 200 total powertrain/bed/GVRW) combinations available, allowing consumers to pick the right truck to suit their particular application. Then, there are the tons of options: Besides the usual Regular Cab/Quad Cab, 2WD/4WD, engines/transmissions, there’s everything from bedliners to power-foldaway/flip-out mirrors, bug shields to trip computers, 240-watt stereos, and even heated leather seats. Dodge has literally left no stone unturned in what it offers in its Heavy Duty Rams, and customers aren’t forced into packages to get one option they desire and others they don’t. After spending weeks with our competitors, evaluating every aspect and nuance, the Ram Heavy Duty stands out as the most significant new truck for ’03. With its excellent powertrains, off-road prowess, smooth on-road driveability, and stump-pulling power, the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty is the hands-down winner of Motor Trend‘s 2003 Truck of the Year award. We understand you are buying online, but with us you are not buying blind! We handwrite every single description. We provide 24+ high resolution pictures & we inspect and photo what you see and what you can't see. We'll also be glad to email you detailed, closeup pictures of any area you'd like to see more of. People ask us all the time what is the catch to our vehicles. They assume that the prices are low because there is something wrong with them. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our secret is simple...LOW OVERHEAD. We are an internet-only dealer. We do not maintain regular office hours or a large sales facility. We simply have a Mississippi bonded dealer's license, a storage lot, and a computer. Since we don't have dozens of mechanics, helpers, salesmen, secretaries, etc. on our payroll; we are able to sell at greatly reduced prices. You will notice that we sometimes go with private auctions. Our reasons are twofold...the latest scam is to send bogus 2nd chance offers to customers from a fake email address in an attempt to scam them out of money. With a private auction the scammers won't know who our bidders are so if you get a 2nd chance offer from us you will know that it is the real deal! In addition, we set our reserves to sell which upsets other sellers! In fact, sometimes we set our reserve $1,000 or more below what our cost is. This leads other sellers to email our customers and knock our product! We will provide the winning bidder, upon request, with a complete bid history including the usernames & bid amounts of all other bidders. All new or low feedback (under 5 positives) bidders must first email us for no other reason than just to make contact. This way we know we have serious bidders! If you don't make contact we will cancel your bid and black you out from future bidding. We do this to avoid the de@dbe@t bidders, so please respect our policy. If you have a rating of 5 or better you don't have to email us. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy our site and add us to your favorites, because you just never know when your dream vehicle will pop up!!! We've put this vehicle through our EXTENSIVE inspection process & can report it has a great ride & drive! We do our best to let you know of any/all issues we can find on these vehicles since you're buying sight-unseen.WATCH THE VIDEO. If you have any specific questions then don't hesitate to call us email us. Please understand we do our best to describe, in detail, every vehicle we offer to the Ebay public. However, if you have any hesitation during the bidding period, please obtain a Buyer's Inspection PRIOR TO PLACING YOUR BID to satisfy yourself. After the auction ends, understand you are the legal winning bidder of this auction and agree to all our Terms and Conditions. Be sure and take a look at the book values on this vehicle (or any other we have for sale) before you bid. We stopped offering a built-in BuyIt Now option due to ebay's policy of letting anyone with an email address register a username. We had half a dozen de@dbe@t bidders in a row hit the BIN with no intention of paying. We do have a BuyIt Now price so give us a call if you're interested. Make sure you call us for more information on this vehicle. As always though, our reserve is THOUSANDS less than NADA value so bid early & bid often so you don't miss out! Don't be outbid at the last minute! With the eBay proxy bidding system all you have to do is enter the maximum amount you're willing to pay when you get ready to bid. Ebay will then automatically bid against other people for you up to that amount to help make sure you don't miss out. This saves you from getting sniped in the last few seconds of an auction by someone with a computer program. Don't try and bid in small increments at the last minute...go ahead & bid the full amount you're willing to pay then let eBay do the hard work! This vehicle is for sale locally so we must reserve the right to end the auction early due to local sale. However, once the reserve is met then we will let the auction run its course & sell to the high bidder. Now for the fine print... We will make every reasonable effort to describe the vehicle, and we include many photos to assist in that effort. Terms of Sale Fee and Tax Information: MS Residents Must Pay The 5% State Sales Tax on all motorized vehicles (7% on anything else such as campers, travel trailers, etc.) and a $100 Title/Doc Fee. This covers our costs for a notary, Fedex charges, and other paperwork. Louisiana, Canadian and other foreign buyers must pay a $149 Documentation Fee to cover the extra Fedex and other expenses associated with doing international (and Cajun) paperwork. We do have Mississippi temporary tags available if you desire one for an additional $50. However, we've sent hundreds of RVs all over the country without them & nobody has ever had an issue driving home. If you want one, LET US KNOW IN ADVANCE. We do not keep them on hand. Winning bidder MUST contact us within 24 hours of auction end and make arrangements for payment at that time. Balance due within 5 days of auction end. De@dbeat bidders WILL receive negative feedback & be reported to ebay. Payment Must Be Made VIA Cashier's Check, Bank-to-Bank Wire Transfer, or Cash (in person). When you're ready to step up to the big dog of diesel trucks, look no further than this 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT. It's loaded up with tons of features and options such as the AM/FM stereo CD, overhead console with readouts for compass, temp, and fuel economy among other items, fog lights, and much more! This one has also been upgraded with an expensive hard tonneau cover, cab visor, grille guard, and fender finders.

Power is from the legendary Cummins turbo diesel that cranks out 305 horsepower stock. That's because it's the HIGH OUTPUT version that was optional and usually only found on duallys or six speed-equipped trcks. 3.73 geared anti-spin diffs are included front & rear so you can rest assured that this truck can get it done off road should the need arise. The AM/FM Stereo CD player works great & it also has a sliding rear window.

Of course, with only 133k miles, the HO Cummins engine is barely broken-in! It runs PERFECT and has NO BLOWBY. Everything in it works just like it should as well. We even installed a 2" leveling kit to give it the right stance and a BRAND NEW matching set of 285-series tires that will work great on the road or of! The automatic transmission shifts out firmly just like it should. It doesn't pull or vibrate either. It still has the original Dodge bedliner too.

We wouldn't hesitate to get in this truck and drive it ANYWHERE. Feel free to fly in and drive it home to where ever home may be. We'll be glad to pick you up at the airport at no extra charge or we'll work with the shipper of your choice to have it transported. Best of all, we got a great buy on it that we're passing along to you in the form of a NO RESERVE AUCTION so bid to win because the high bidder will own thsi truck no matter if the final price is THOUSANDS BELOW the book value!!!

2003 Truck of the Year: Dodge Ram Heavy Duty

Changing the face of the pickup-truck market--again

From the onset of our Truck of the Year competition, we knew the Ram Heavy Duty was a prime contender.

“This is a truck engine.”

Back for another tour of duty, the 8.0-liter/ 305-horsepower Magnum V-10 remains an option, with either a five-speed manual or automatic tranny.

“If you look up ‘torque’ in Webster’s,” commented Road Test Editor Chirico, “you’d see a picture of the High Output Cummins next to the definition.”

Both three-quarter and one-ton Rams are available in 2WD and 4WD variants, in standard or Quad Cab configurations, with a manual transfer case for ST trim or electronically controlled cases for SLT and Laramie packages.

If that isn't enough twist, the new high-output 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel puts an astounding 555 lb-ft of tug to the tarmac.

As Associate Editor Brian Vance penned, “It’s the SuperSize of pickups.”

While the interiors have some hard plastic pieces, fit and finish are on par with Japan's best.

While some of our editors like the in-your-face look, others suggest that Dodge might have taken the image a bit too far. Senior shooter Kiewicz noted, “You’re going to either love or hate the Dodge’s styling, but regardless, you’re going to notice it.”

Recreational towing has never been more popular, and the HD has been designed for pulling heavy loads with ease.

For a mere $23,280, you get a well-equipped Regular Cab hauler, with chrome bumpers, tinted windows, the 5.7-liter Hemi engine, foldaway mirrors, air-conditioning, auxiliary powerpoints, under-seat compartment storage, over 3000 pounds of payload capacity, and a host of other goodies–and we’re talking about just the base model.

Now the fine print...

We do our best to let you know of any/all issues we can find on these vehicles since you're buying sight-unseen. WATCH THE VIDEO.
