You are bidding on a very rare and original 1968 Volkswagen Thing. This particular car was originally produced for the German military and therefore has many items on it that would have been standard on German Type 181 cars, such as the spare gas tank mounted in the spare tire, gas heater, extra fusebox, olive drab top and side curtains, brush guard, etc. This car was probably used as a staff car in the German army because it only has 56,000 Km (33,000 miles) on it and shows no signs of the abuse you’d expect of a car used in the field. Rust is not an issue at all on this car. I could not find a single rust hole anywhere on the entire car, top, or bottom. The front seats were replaced with VW Bug seats about 15 years ago when it was imported through the Brunswick, GA, port here in the USA from Germany. The rear seats are original and in excellent condition. It has only had one repaint in the ugly teal green that covers the original olive drab paint. The car has been in storage for about 5 years, but started right up when we connected an external gas source to the fuel line. It runs very smooth with no missing. I don’t see any evidence of leaks or other problems with the gas tank or original fuel lines, but would probably clean them out before running the engine off the fuel tank. Also, the brakes will need to be bled as is usual with a car that has been sitting for a few years. I expect payment within 5 days of the end of the auction. The car can be picked up after your check has cleared my bank. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, but I can give the name of a good, reliable shipper if you wish. Buyer will be given a Bill of Sale only. There is no Title for this car.
