Vehicle Detail
1966 Volvo 1800S One owner car Great on the road Nice old survivor Bought new at Jim Fisher Volvo in Portland on August 1st 1966, this 1800S has had one owner since new. Recently released from the estate, this is a car that has always been garaged, always cherished, and displays an authentic lived-in look. While not quite ready for the show field, this car is more of an honest old driver, the proverbial survivor car; not perfect but not intended to be. Positives are its strict absence of rust and an excellent original drivertain, still on the streets of Portland and going strong after 50 years. In my line of work I get to enjoy these cars for a few weeks at a time, getting to know them for awhile before they go to market. I used this Volvo as my daily driver for a couple of weeks and it was just a super car to live with. Taking my kid to school in the mornings, errands around town, the occasional freeway jaunt - the car never missed a beat and was always well behaved. I've found that most one-owner cars are like that. The pride of ownership that comes from buying the car new carries over throughout its life, with a commitment for giving it the care it deserves - treat the car right and it will treat you right in return. This is one of those cars. Click to enlarge any of the images, OR click here to view a slideshow of all of the enlarged images. The car wears an older repaint in its original color of Light Blue, code 89. The right rear quarter was painted again some time after that and shows a slight color mismatch in that area. This car looks pretty sharp going down the road but on close inspection be prepared to find the following: Chips! Scrapes! Scuffs! Dings! Overspray! Still reading? What you won't be finding is rust. This 1800 is super solid and the undercarriage is exceptional, pics of that are shown further down the page. Tires are Nankang radials in great shape with lots of tread. Both bumpers are original and never replated, they're still looking pretty good. All of the car's brightwork is in nice original condition with no pitting or tarnishing. The belt line spear on the driver's side has a pretty good sized ding just above the front wheelwell, not easy to see in the photos. That's about the only area of damage on the trim, the rest is very nice. Grill, emblem, lights and lenses are all in good shape. Windshield is Volvo branded, appears to be original, has some light wiper rash but no chips or stars. Back glass is very nice. Very good side glass and serviceable weatherstripping. Original trunk mat, spare cover and jacking equipment. Front seats have been reupholstered, otherwise the interior is all original. Original carpet hanging in there after 50 years. Nice back seat and original luggage straps. The suitcase is included, actually a pretty nice vintage piece. All gauges are working except for the clock. The ignition switch and armored coil lead are operable but the starting circuit has been routed to the push button you see in the 4th photo below. Heater, fan and plenums all operate correctly and the system really delivers the heat like all Volvos from this era. Odometer reading of 78K believed to be original but due to the car's age it is sold mileage-exempt. The 1800 gauges from this era almost all display some crazing to the faces, these are perfect. Horn button is also like new, but the horn itself doesn't work, I tested the wire at the steering box and I'm not getting 12V from it, couldn't trace the problem further. All of the other electricals on the car operate correctly - wipers, lights, signals, fan, radio - all working. Original headliner and seatbelts are in good shape. Windows wind smoothly, locks all work. Passenger side window has a bit of a rattle. All of the car's weatherstripping is original, some of it shows its age but the car remains watertight. The car comes with a nice assortment of original manuals and paperwork. The B18 motor is matching numbers. You're going to like the way this Volvo runs and drives. Starts instantly, runs out great and is not a leaker. The car has just had a tune-up, fresh oil change, new valve stem seals and valve adjustment. Recent service work also includes a front end rebuild and new motor mounts. The car runs down the road with a nice solid feel, it handles well and has good braking power. The M41 transmission operates perfectly with smooth and sure gear changes up and down. For anyone who's used to the long throw shifter on the 122's, the ultra-short throw gear selector on this car will be a revelation, it's a lot of fun. The overdrive functions correctly and makes freeway driving a breeze. Super nice undercarriage, the only thing I can find to fault is the hole on the rear muffler. It doesn't seem to make the exhaust any louder so it didn't bother me much. The real beauty here is the fidelity of the undercarriage: all original floor pans, perfect rockers and pinch welds, and no sign of patching or repair. Just a really honest example of Volvo's venerable 1800 series. The car is reliable enough to be used as a daily driver, weekend rally toy, or could be the ultimate candidate for an uncomplicated cosmetic restoration.
