Vehicle Detail

1972 Mercedes-Benz 220D Beautiful Survivor 102K easy miles Original paint Here up for bids on eBay is this incredibly well preserved Mercedes 220D.  If you follow these W115 sedans on eBay you know that the really good ones are not easy to find, I usually see only 4 or 5 on eBay each year.  A lot of these cars suffered from deferred maintenance, uncaring owners, or rust.  This car is the exception; it features all original paint with zero rust issues anywhere.  The interior is all original and in outstanding condition.   The car runs and drives beautifully.  I believe that it's about as close to showroom new as you'll find.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. For having original paint, this car shines.  The paint quality is beautiful with excellent depth and gloss.  No sun fading, checking or other age related problems.   Some faint scratches and touched up chips in the front are all I can find to fault.  Original paint elimates a lot of guesswork about a car's past, what you see is what your get and your'e going to like what your see here.  The body is arrow straight with excellent panel gaps throughout.  I  have been over this car from top to bottom and have found no rust issues anywhere - no bubbling, no blistering - no problems.  Tires are classic Michelin XZX's with lots of tread and no sidewall checking.  All 4 wheelcovers are excellent. No dents or dings except for a few areas on the fender tops and hood, not immediately noticeable.  All of the car's trim is in great shape with no damage. Headlights are the original GE units from new.   Excellent grill, emblem and star.  All of the chrome on this car is terrific with no pitting.   Both bumpers are in great shape with excellent chrome, they have never been replated and still look great after 42 years.  Lights and lenses are all terrific.   The glass is all original, including the windshield.  It's all in excellent condition although the windshield has two small stars up high in the center.  These stars are obscured while driving, thankfully positioned behind the rear view mirror from your line of sight.  The passenger side still has the original antifreeze snowflake sticker, the drivers side shows the "Kinonglass-Kristall" marking that assures originality.  The Bosch wiper blade holders are original, these usually got tossed at the first change.  Classic Hirchmann antenna is in great shape.  The trunk has the original Bilstein jacking equipment and a matching Michelin XZX spare that's unused.  W115 trunks often serve as a litmus test for the car's history.  One look underneath the mat tells it all. The interior in this Mercedes is like stepping back in time; it's perfectly preserved.  The MB-Tex seats are all original but look like new.  From the carpet to the headliner, the interior is simply incredible. Exemplary steering wheel with no cracks.  Perfect dash with no splits, rare for this model. "Cognac" seats in outstanding condition.  Driver's side door panel pocket has a crack.  Windows all wind smoothly, vacuum powered locks work correctly. Every gauge, switch and control operates correctly, even the clock.  Heater levers move freely and the fan works correctly.  The old adage is that the Mercedes engineers who designed this fan decided to build a car around it.  It's not easy to access, hence the importance of having it working.  All 3 speeds work and it runs smoothly and quietly.  The belt for the A/C compressor has been removed, the switch still activates the plenums, fan and indicator light, but the belt (included) will need to be reinstalled and the system charged, at a minimum.  The previous owner informed me that it was removed to increase fuel efficiency, I guess to go from 45MPG to 46?   Becker radio works perfectly and has surprisingly good sound.  Original owner's manual in the glovebox plus a full assortment of other factory literature. Original carpeting throughout, even the driver's heel pad looks good.  The one and only upholstery flaw in this interior is a small blem on the driver's seat (2nd photo below).  The car has not been smoked in, ashtrays and lighter are unused. The cloth binding around the door perimeters looks like new.  Windows seals are all excellent.  All of the weatherstripping on the car is original and still holding up beautifully. Seldom used back seat, parcel shelf is like new, no sun fading anywhere. This is the type of car where even the nooks and crannys can hold up to close scrutiny. The headliner and sunvisors are like showroom new.  By this point I'm probably sounding effusive but this car is just that good. This Mercedes runs and drives as well as it looks.  The car starts easily and runs down the road with decorum.  Some say that these diesels are smelly, smoky and slow.  They're only right on the third count.  Yes, your Subaru can outrun it, but I've found that the car is actually easy to live with as a daily driver.  It has enough power to keep up with traffic and as long as you're not racing for pink slips the car holds its own.  After the glow plug indicator lights, it starts immediately and runs beautifully.  I happen to love the sound of a well running diesel motor, I recorded this one so you can give it a listen, access the audio file here . This was recorded with the hood up, right next to the engine, the car is not this loud when you're sitting inside it, it's actually pretty quiet.  It's not a smoker and doesn't smell of diesel, even with the windows down. The cars shows good gauge readings with excellent oil pressure and cool running temperatures.  The car shifts perfectly, brakes well (4 wheel discs) and rides down the road without a squeak or rattle.  Never run on biofuels.  Included with the car is a full assortment of factory literature including the original data plate, Hirschmann antenna keys and 2 data cards. The undercarriage is all original, still showing the cosmoline treatment and original exhaust from the factory.  Never hit, never rusted, this is what a W115 undercarrige should look like.
