Vehicle Detail

HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF A 1952 MG TD. THIS CAR IS IN EXTREMELY GOOD CONDITION! YOU MIGHT SAY EXCELLENT CONDITION! I HAVE LOOKED IT OVER, AND ONLY FOUND A FEW PLACES, WHERE THE PAINT IS CHIPPED. THIS IS A CAR THAT YOU COULD SHOW, OR DRIVE. THE REAR END HAD THE GEAR RATIO CONVERTED TO MGA 4.3:1 GEARS IN 2002. THAT UPGRADE EXTENDS THE ENGINE LIFE ALMOST 3X. STANDARD GEAR RATIOS CARS REQUIRE ROD BEARING REPLACEMENT AT ABOUT 30,000 MILES. BY LOWERING THE ENGINE OPERATING RPM, THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE ENGINE GREATLY INCREASES, TO ABOUT 82,000 MILES, BEFORE HAVING TO REPLACE THE ROD BEARINGS. THIS CAR CAN EASILY CRUISE THE FREEWAYS AT 68 MPH, AT 4,000 RPM. CURRENTLY OWNED BY SANTA CLAUS. SEE THE WEBSITE: CLAUSFORACAUSE FOR MORE INFO. DEPOSIT OF $500.00 REQUIRED WITHIN 72 HOURS OF AUCTION CLOSING; FULL PAYMENT REQUIRED WITHIN 7 DAYS OF AUCTION CLOSING. VEHICLE IS LOCATED IN HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA, USA. CAN ARRANGE SHIPPING, CONTINENTAL OR OVERSEAS. VEHICLE CAN BE VIEWED. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ARRANGING FOR VIEWING OF THIS CAR. DON'T BE TAKEN IN BY A CAR THAT IS "AN OLDER RESTORATION, SHOW WINNER, OR NEEDS JUST A LITTLE TENDER LOVING CARE." I'VE SEEN THOSE CARS, AND THEY WILL END UP COSTING YOU ABOUT $10,000.00 TO FIX THE PROBLEMS. THIS IS A CAR THAT YOU CAN PLAN ON DRIVING, OR SHOWING, AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT! ASK A BRITISH CAR REPAIR SHOP ABOUT THOSE BARGAIN CARS ON EBAY, AND THEY WILL ALL HAVE THE SAME STORY. I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THE CRANKSHAFT WILL NOT BREAK, OR A REAR AXLE WILL BREAK, BUT I CAN SAY THAT THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL CAR, FUN TO DRIVE, DEPENDABLE. ONE THAT YOU CAN DRIVE A DISTANCE, WITHOUT PROBLEMS. THEY WERE BUILT TO BE DRIVEN, MORE THAN 5 MILES. HERE IS THE EXAMINATION THAT I HAVE DONE ON THIS CAR: ENGINE A A compression test was performed, and all cylinders were in 10% of each other. Engine block number is XPAG/TD2/3419. This engine is the correct style of one that came with the car, but not the matching number engine for the car. That would be XPAG/TD2/19660. The engine installed is an early TD engine, upgraded with the later style oil pump. The cylinder head casting number of AEF118, which is correct for a MG TF 1500. It has larger valves than the stock head would. It is a long reach head, requiring the 3/4” reach spark plugs. Engine has the 6 quart oil pan installed. NGK BP6ES plugs are recommended. Camshaft installed is a 0.012” clearance camshaft, for valve setting. EXHAUST AA No problems found. Looks like a mild steel exhaust system has been installed. Mostly original. FUEL SYSTEM B Car has a single S.U. Fuel pump, mounted on the firewall. Carburetors are 1 1/4” S.U. HS2. The size is correct for this car. This carb type came off of a MG Midget, or Austin Healey Sprite. Improved version of the 1 1/4" H2 S.U. carbs. H2 type S.U. carbs can be easily sourced, but will not change operation. Original aluminum air cleaner manifold and oil bath air cleaner are installed. IGNITION EQUIPMENT C Car presently has Kettering points system installed. It can be upgraded to Pertronix electronic ignition. Distributor rotation is counterclockwise. Firing order is 1-3-4-2. COOLING SYSTEM D All water hoses looked to be in very good condition. No water leaks were found. Checked coolant, and was rust free. Radiator core is a 3 pass core, correct style. Fan is the original metal fans for the TC-TD-TF. A 7 Blade plastic fan, used on MGB, can be installed. Greatly improves air flow at low speed. FLYWHEEL AND CLUTCH E Tested OK. Car originally equipped with a rod operated clutch. GEARBOX F Tested OK. Original MOWOG 4 speed transmission. Has 8” clutch installed; correct for model. PROPELLER SHAFT G Original drive shaft for MG TD/TF installed. Has been shortened by 1/2”, for MGA gears installed in differential. No problems seen. REAR AXLE H Rear end ratio has been up-rated to 4.3:1 ratio. MGA gears, fitted to the MG TD/TF differential housing. REAR ROAD SPRINGS I No problems found. STEERING GEAR J The steering rack boots appeared to be OK. Use 90W gear oil in the steering rack. Steering wheel is the stock wheel for the MG TD and TF. FRONT SUSPENSION K Front A-arm bushings have been replaced, with either urethane, or rubber bushings. HYDRAULIC DAMPERS L Performed a bounce test on the car. All shocks found to be in working order, and dampened oscillation very quickly. Girling hydraulic dampers were installed all around. -1- BRAKING SYSTEM M Brake system requires use of either Castrol GT/LMA brake fluid. No fluid leaks observed. Tested brakes, perfect stopping power. Parking brake holds car. Occasionally, check the adjusters for the front (2) and rear (1) brakes. Tighten until cannot tighten any more, then back off one click. Parking brake is set by pressing on the button, as you pull up the parking brake handle. To release, pull up the handle, without pressing on the button. The braking system was recently gone through. ELECTRICS N The battery is a lead/acid battery. Wiring is PVC coated wires, with either electrical tape cover. Loom looks to be in very good to excellent condition. Horns tested OK. Wiper motor tested, and does work. Car does have turn signals installed. The the original vacuum switch, under the dash, near the shift lever, operates the turn signals. Original turn signal switch is a vacuum operated self-cancelling switch, which would allow for the turn signals to operate for 8-20 seconds before canceling. Mounts with a bracket, to the inner dash panel, with just the lever seen. This one currently does not self-cancel, so you have to remember to do that. Can be rebuilt, to self-cancel, or leave as is. Generator is a Lucas model 22715, for MG Midget, or Austin Healey Sprite. It is a tach drive generator, with spade connector ends. TD had stud connector ends. LAMPS & LENSES NN Sealed beam headlamps (matched), copy of Lucas Tripod Headlamps. Headlamp rims show very minor pitting. Side lamps are Lucas issue from early 1970’s, in very good to excellent condition. Buckets do not have the Lucas emblem installed, and are painted. Correct for this year MG production. INSTRUMENTS NNN Clock presently inoperative. No wire going to clock. Other instruments functional. The car has an oil pressure/water temperature gauge in the instrument panel, 30-0-30 ammeter, horn/dimmer switch, and ignition switch. All dash gauges and switches are correct for this car. Mileage on odometer reads 92,241. WHEELS AND TYRES O Tires are radial, made by Jupiter YP-821 (4) and spare (make unknown). Size installed was 165R15. (Volkswagen size). Very nice tan canvas cover on spare tire prevents from seeing make of tire. SERVICE/LUBRICATION P Oil pan is the 6 qt. pan. BODYSHELLS/PANELS R The body panels are straight, free from any major, or minor, dents! A small paint chip can be found in the right front fender, right rear fender, right running board, and right side of gas tank. Paint is in very good to excellent condition condition. It appears to be a single stage paint job. The left and right main beam rails looked to be OK. Could not insert a pen knife deep into any area! Opened doors, and checked for stiffness of door hinge pillar wood. All wood found to be in very good to excellent shape. Doors close, and latch, properly. Only a vehicle with wood in very good to excellent condition can achieve the doors to close and latch properly, into the hole in the striker plate wedge, and not just resting on the safety catch. LOCKS, MECHANISM, DOOR PULLS RR Outer chrome on handles are in very good to excellent condition. Both the L/H and R/H door lock pins are engaging into the main locking hole of the striker plate wedge. Same can be said for the hood latches. All hood handles are in very good to excellent condition. All hood latches are operating correctly. LOCKS INTERIOR, DOOR PULLS RRR Chrome on lock covers is in very good to excellent condition. -2- BADGES & BRIGHTWORK RRRR Chrome on radiator shell is in very good to excellent condition, as is most of the chrome work on the car. Some light, minor pitting can be found on the headlamp rims. The hood latches and door handles are in very good to excellent condition. Headlamp buckets are painted; do not have the Lucas emblem, which is correct for this year’s manufacture. GLASS & GLAZING RRRRR Windshield glass looks OK, no cracks or chips. Windshield facing correct direction. INTERIOR RRRRRRR Interior is biscuit in color. It looks to be a either a Moss Motors, or custom, upholstery kit, seats and trim panels. The Dash panel is a plywood, with biscuit rexine covering. All dash chrome strips found. Glove box installed. Carpet is black, and looks to be in near new condition. SEAT BELTS RRRRRRRR Car has seat belts installed. Black in color. HOODS/HARDTOP RRRRRRRRR The top is a two bow top, correct for the year. Side curtain frames were found, and are also for a 2 bow top car. Bolts passing through upholstery in rear, for securing fuel tank, are correct to be seen. Could be also painted, to blend in with interior. Hood is an tan canvas top, made to fit a two bow top. It is in very good to excellent condition. The tonneau cover looks to be a custom made product. It is in very good to excellent condition. Tan canvas construction. The rear window in the hood (top) is slightly discolored. Easy to see through. Plastic cleaner and polish might eliminate the discoloration. LUGGAGE RACKS/TOWING RRRRRRRRRR Chrome luggage rack, made by Moss Motors. Recreation of the Runnion Luggage Rack. Chrome is in very good to excellent condition. Tool box is lined in thick white felt, which is correct. Found screw jack, two piece jack handle and pony bar, and TD/TF disk wheel lug wrench inside. PAINT/UNDERSEAL RRRRRRRRRRR Undercarriage of the car is very clean. Obviously, some extensive restoration work has been done, to clean up the chassis, and suspension components, of the car. No rust was found. Based on wood findings, would presume this to be a California, or southwestern US, car. CHASSIS FRAME REPAIRS S None obvious.
