Vehicle Detail
1946 Buick Super Sedanette 58K original miles Very original example Running, driving project Here up for bids is this 1946 Buick Super Sedanette. The 50-Series Supers shared the same big body of the Roadmaster but were equipped with the more economical engine of the Special. This car has just emerged from a 51 year hibernation, it shows 58K on the odometer and is believed to be original miles. An Idaho car from new, it was put on blocks and fluids drained in 1962. The grandson of its owner inherited the car last year and set about to get it roadworthy again. After some brake work, all new fluids, a new battery and work on the fuel system the car fired right up. I bought the car from him last year with plans to have it repainted but never did get around to that. I did mount a set of new Firestone Deluxe Champions from Coker, but have decided to let a new owner decide where to take it from here. The car is drivable as is but would still need to be gone through a little more completely before trusting it on a road trip. I've put about 50 miles on it around town and it actually drives out nicely. The choice is yours; a scruffy survivor from the past or a fantastic starting point for restoration. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car wears an older repaint that shows a lot of wear. You'll find countless paint chips, some small dents and scrapes on overall tired paint. Some of my friends suggested that I polish out the paint but I think I'd rather just show it as it is. A cut and buff could bring it up a level though. The body lines are pretty nice, doors shut well and panel gaps are uniform. The upper body stainless trim is in great shape, the lower trim has a few small tweaks. The car is 100% complete with no missing items. Tires are new Firestone bias plys from Coker with about 50 miles on them. All 4 hubcaps and trims rings are in great shape. The only corrosion I've found on the car is a questionable area on the driver's side rocker. I have poked at this with a screwdriver and it's still fairly solid but should be ground down and sealed. The rest of the car shows areas of surface flash but no areas of rot, underside included. The glass is all original LOF Safety-Plate, even the windshields. They show no wiper wash or chips, very nice for their age and another indicator of the miles. The driver's side door window has a crack that can only be felt from the inside. Windows wind smoothly and the glass has no hard water spotting, you can tell that this car was stored indoors. All of the trim surrounding the windows is in excellent shape. The chrome trim on the car is in very nice condition with no major pitting. Lights and lenses are in good shape. Both bumpers show tarnishing and the front bumper has a split near the center, see 1st photo below. The grill, however, is in terrific shape with zero damage. Hood emblem and gunsight are both excellent originals. The interior shows minimal wear and is in line with 58K miles. The flooring is all original and holding up beautifully after 68 years. The seat backs show wear at each top corner, otherwise they're incredibly well preserved. Back seat is excellent. Forward floor rubber mat is still intact. Nice sills, step plates and foot rests. Steering wheel has a split at 11 and 1. Not sure why there's a Roadmaster horn ring, maybe the 50's equivalent of putting SS badging on a Impala? All gauges are operational and show good readings. The odometer digits line up perfectly. Radio, clock and wipers are not working. Fan, horn, signals, and lighting all work as they should. Door hardware is all in great condition. Very nice original headliner with one small mend at the rear corner. Very nice windlacing throughout. Window garnish moldings are all excellent. The material covering the parcel shelf was shriveled up so I removed it. It needs to be steamed smooth and re-installed, I will include it. Also included is a car cover. The trunk is undisturbed, original and complete. The wiring in this car is all original and remarkably intact. The 248ci Straight Eight runs smoothly with no smoke. When driven regularly the car will start on the first try, if it sits for more than a week it will take a few tries. The motor produces good power and has a smooth balanced idle. The clutch has some chatter when taking off from a dead start, it's smooth at other speeds. Transmission shifts perfectly up or down. The car rides down the road nicely, it brakes well but tends to pull to the left on hard braking. Many original details throughout. Working generator and original Stromberg carburetor. Very solid undercarriage with all original metal and no signs of accident history or rust problems. Original GM muffler. Exhaust pipe leading into it has a leak, the muffler itself appears sound after 68 years. Gas tank is in impressive condtion as well. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
