Vehicle Detail

1964 Mercedes Universal Wagon by Binz Rare coachbuilt wagon Solid body and undercarriage No Reserve Auction Up for bids is this rare 1964 Mercedes 190C, hand built by coachbuilder Binz.  Binz has been working with Mercedes for over 75 years - mainly building ambulances, hearses and a small amount of station wagons - they are still in business today.  This wagon was built for the US market and was sold new to Daum Motors in Wisconsin.  The car has had 3 owners, the 2nd owner bought the wagon at the original selling dealership in the late 60s and later moved with the car to Colorado.  The wagon was passed down to his son and later brought to Washington State where it has resided since the late 90s.    Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available at the bottom of the page.   The car is painted in DB181 Beige Gray, although on the data card the Lackierung (paintwork) code shows 027.  027 is the data code for primer, which is apparently how the cars were supplied to Binz. The paint is to good driver quality standards, it's far from show quality but is still presentable; the proverbial 20 footer.  The body is very straight with no dents or damage, all panel gaps are uniform and the doors open and close precisely.  Binz had (has) a very good reputation, these were well built cars.  Binz used 15" wheels instead of the standard 14", these are original to the car and date coded.  The tires are old but have good tread and no sidewall checking. Both bumpers are straight and true, showing minimal wear.  The grill is in good shape, it likewise shows minor hazing and flaws but overall looks good after 50 years. The car's biggest flaw are some chips and scrapes on the driver's side fender, with a bit of paint mismatch as well.  The anodized trim surrounding the windows shows some clouding and one area of staining, see 2nd photo below.  The only rust that I've found on the car is some minor bubbling on the wheel arch in the 3rd photo, with that exception this wagon is solid.   Both fender mounted turn signals are in excellent original condition. All of the glass is original, it shows some small scratches in spots but is overall very nice.  The windshield has one small star out of the line of sight on the passenger side.  It is Sigla branded, the remainder are Sekurit pieces.  The car features a factory installed Webasto sunroof, I don't think I've seen another Universal wagon with one, I guess that makes it double rare.  The sunroof opens and closes easily and is watertight. Seats and carpet were redone in the past, they're now showing some age but overall still usable. Early style door hardware is all intact and complete.  Windows wind easily, door locks all work. Clean cargo area with Pirelli spare and original hold down strap. The back seat folds flat and creates a good amount of cargo space.  The headliner is original and shows some light staining.  Sunroof slides smoothly and latches securely.  Sunvisors are both in good shape, a St. Christopher medallion keeps watch over travelers. The ivory steering wheel shows multiple hairline cracks but no splits, the horn ring is the early round style.  Heater levers move freely and the fan works.  The original Europa TG radio works and has good sound, this is a hard to find unit and has a smaller height dimension that is specific to the early 60s Mercedes models.  In other words, having an original Europa TG is a big plus.  The only inoperative items are the horn and clock, otherwise all of the electrics work correctly, even the cigarette lighter.  The dash pad shows no splits, cracks or brittleness.  All of the gauges show good, consistent readings. The ribbon speedometer starts off yellow at slow speeds and changes to red at higher speeds.  The car comes with its original kit of Dowidat tools.  Also included is a huge assortment of original manuals and booklets plus an assortment of service records. The original 4cyl motor was replaced by the 2nd owner who wanted something more powerful.  A 6cyl 230 motor was sourced and it does make quite a difference.  This car has a substantial amount of power and really runs excellent.  It likes to have a minute to warm up but runs and drives terrific soon afterward.  This wagon is great on the road, it shifts well, brakes well, runs cool and handles nicely.  Basically, it motors along with zero drama, just an easy car to get along with. Clean and dry undercarriage with no rust or rot.  No signs of accident damage either, just a nice example of a rare Binz wagon.   Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
