Vehicle Detail

1965 Volvo PV544 Sport Last of the PV series 2 owners, long term ownership Sold new in Portland Oregon Up for bids is this sharp Volvo PV, a 1965 544.  The PV series started in 1944 and remained relatively unchanged until 1966.  About 440,000 cars were built over the 22 year production run, this example was built near the end and features the high horsepower B18D motor plus other improvements. This car was bought new at Don Rasmussen Volvo in Portland on July 16th, 1965.  The car stayed with its first owner for 21 years, in 1986 it was sold to an enthusiast in Boise who kept the car in terrific condition for the next 28 years.  Receipts are included that show the car's service history over these last 28 years, mostly with the same mechanic.  The original Volvo warranty booklet and owner's manual are included as well.  Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car has had a good driver quality repaint, it presents well and has a nice finish.  The color is a bit more saturated than the original, not an unpleasing color for this car but not totally correct.  Expect to see some areas of mismatch, as well as some minor overspray in areas.  The car's presentation is overall something you can be proud of, even if it's not quite ready for the lawn at Pebble Beach.  The body on this Volvo is rock solid, you'll find no bubbling or blistering anywhere.  The body panels are straight and true with no dings, dents or waviness.  Panel fit is good throughout.  The car rides on a set of Nankang radials with low miles and excellent tread. Included with the car is a very rare early production Thule ski rack, the perfect accessory for a Swedish car. All of the glass is in excellent shape, the windshield is a replacement piece and is crystal clear. Very nice grill and surround, all of the car's trim is in good shape with no pitting. Both bumpers were rechromed, they now show some minor wear, the worst spot being an area of flaking on the rear bumper, see the 3rd photo below.   Pretty nice fit and finish from every angle.  It's interesting that Volvo never thought to modernize this design ('46 Ford anyone?), but the buying public didn't seem to care.  Upon its retirement Volvo actually received many disgruntled letters and even ran tongue-in-cheek ads urging calm among Volvo affiicionados. Clean and dry trunk compatment features the original Nike jack and Firestone Deluxe Champion spare.     The original warranty booket and owner's manual comes along with 28 years of service receipts. Redone seat upholstery and rubber flooring, door panels are original and in good shape. Solid sills and door jambs.  Good weatherstripping.  Windows wind smoothly. One small mended tear on the passenger seat.  Roomy backseat with seating for 3.  Original seatbelts for front seat passengers. All of the gauges work correctly, including the unique ribbon speedometer.  This was actually designed as a safety feature by Volvo; the more red you see the more caution you should exercise.  The original Bendix radio still works.  Heater and fan work great. Lights, signals and horn work correctly.  Good original headliner with the exception of a few small punctures at the rear. Excellent dashpad with no splits or cracks.  Steering wheel and horn ring are in great shape.  The underdash firewall padding is clean and original.  The 6 piece flooring set is an exact (and expensive) reproduction. The B18D motor was Volvo's highest HP offering for this series and is reflected by the "Sport" medallion on the trunk lid.  While leisurely by today's standards it was actually a pretty good performer back in the day, Road and Track's testing showed 0-60 times better than the Sunbeam Alpine and Triumph Spitfire. This car pulls strongly, shifts smoothly, and just runs down the road as tight as can be. The car doesn't smoke and is not a leaker. The car has a great turning radius and is easy to drive around town, it's equally at home on the freeway. Surprisingly, the best place for this car is on back country roads, it handles really well. You can leave it in 3rd gear on twisty roads and run anywhere from 30-50 mph without really having to touch the brakes, it provides just the right combination of power and engine braking that makes driving fun. SU carbs, recently tuned.  Matching numbers motor.  Rebuilt generator. Solid unibody undercarriage with excellent pans. The arrow in the 1st photo below shows an area of damage where the car was inexplicably jacked up next to, and not on the factory jacking point.  As a result the metal is slightly tweaked in the area.  Otherwise, everything's looking pretty great after 49 years.
