Vehicle Detail
1972 Volvo 1800ES Sport Wagon 118K original miles Fresh restoration 4spd M41 Overdrive Up for bids is this terrific 1972 Volvo 1800ES. Relatively rare, Volvo built these "Sport Wagons" over just a 2 year period; 1972-1973. ES values have been steadily appreciating, here's an opportunity to own a show quality example. Click to enlarge any of the photos below, a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. The car has had an exceptional repaint in its original color of Sun Yellow, code 107. The prep and application were first rate, it's 2-stage paint using Sikkens materials. All of the trim and weatherstripping were off the car, you'll find no overspray or tape lines - this paint presents very well. . The body panels are arrow straight, and of course have no rust issues anywhere. The undercarriage is likewise solid with factory spot welds along the wheels arches and front and rear valances. The car rides on a set of good quality Continental tires with lots of tread. The car has a new 6 piece set of belt-line side trim, they are flawless, and at $500 for the set they had better be! They definitely add a crisp feel to this ES and complement the high quality paint. The remainder of the trim are factory originals still looking good after 42 years. The bumpers are original and have never been replated, they show some light hazing and a few light scratches, overall they are presentable and add an honest feel to the car. I wouldn't replate them unless you want perfection. The remainder of the car's chrome is in excellent shape with no pitting or flaking. Lights and lenses are all in excellent condition. The Hirschmann antenna is original and in terrific shape. Very nice glass throughout the car. A look behind the gas filler cap shows that everything was off the car before painting. Front grill and surround are both in great condition, front and rear valances still both show the factory spot welds, neither one have any accident damage or history of rust problems. The leather front seats have a nice lived-in patina, this interior is all original, a testament to its low miles. Carpet, door panels, dash pad, etc - all original. The steering wheel is in good shape with no splits. The center console compartment has a functioning lock and key. The gauges are all working, even the clock. All of the gauges show good readings; good oil pressure and cool operating temperatures. Lights, signals, horn, wipers, etc are all functioning correctly. The heater and plenums work correctly and as with most Volvos, really crank out the heat. Original door panels with no warping. Good sill plates and weatherstripping. With the exception of the cassette player, everything here is as it left the factory. Upper and lower dash pads are both in good condition. Good headliner and visors. The back seat, console, and seat belts are in good shape with no wear. The seat folds down to create 28 square feet of cargo space. It doesn't look like this car has done much heavy hauling, some sun fading is the only sign of wear here. Back glass struts operate well, the hatch's locking mechanism functions correctly. The car comes with its original spare, a Goodyear tire marked "Made in Sweden". Also included is the factory jacking equipment and tool kit. The kit still has the Volvo branded fuse box and a key for the Hirschmann antenna. Side cargo areas are pretty much untouched, both drain tubes are clear and work as intended. The car starts readily and runs out great. The motor pulls strongly, the gearbox shifts smoothly, the ride is tight and responsive. The overdrive makes freeway travel a breeze. This car offers a good mix of sport and comfort, you definitely feel part of the driving process but without the harshness that some sports cars exhibit. This Volvo has a nice comfortable ride, good visibility, good braking, and an overall feeling of solid reliability that is unique to Volvos. Recent work includes new injectors and pressure regulator, new water pump, completely new brake system from the master cylinder to the calipers and a new exhaust from the manifold back. ES undercarriages were heavily undercoated from new and as a result aren't the prettiest to look at. What looks good here though is the strength and fidelity of the sheet metal. From the sills to the floor pans to the wheel arches - no rust, just a very nice example of Volvo's signature Sport Wagon. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
