Vehicle Detail
Up for auction from my personal collection is my 1972 Suzuki GT380 J. This GT380 is in overall very nice original condition and has been used very sparingly over the years as it only has 6,577 original and correct miles on it. This very nice original example even sports the original tires as well as other original components that are correct and original to this example. The frame number appearing on this GT380 is GT380-20424 and the engine appearing on this GT380 is GT380-20483 making this a numbers matching correct original example. The build date on the steering neck reads 9/71. I acquired this GT380 some time ago and decided to purchase it because of its overall very nice condition and the fact that it was totally original and correct. With so many vintage motorcycles in my collection, I have decided to let some of my nicer original examples go as I am never going to have time to enjoy them all. I am convinced the new owner of this all original and correct GT380 will appreciate its originality and overall quality. I would like to stress that fact that this nice GT380 should not be confused with the other examples of GT’s sporadically offered by amateur and unreliable sellers. It is overall clean, correct and a nice example that has nothing to do with other examples I have seen listed for sale that are dirty/ruined parts bikes and in my opinion embarrassing. Cosmetically, this GT380 shows very well for an original example. The original paint is present on the fuel tank. The fuel tank does have some chips, scratches and dents from age and being stored for many years. The tank could be repainted and cleaned out inside as it has very old gas in it. The side covers are overall very nice originals that show nicely with nice original paint and original emblems. As you know, side covers in nice original condition with no cracks are very, very difficult to locate and procure. The headlight bucket and fork ears are also in original condition and overall nice. Even the original Suzuki headlight bulb is still installed and features the Suzuki “S” embossed in the glass. The fork ears are not bent or dented. The left hand fork ear does have some paint chips from age. The body work is in overall presentable condition and in my opinion is in nice enough original condition that I would recommend enjoying it as is. The new owner could also restore this body work as well if they desire to do so. The correct and original seat is in very nice original condition and features a soft and flexible original cover. The front and rear fenders and in nice factory correct Suzuki condition as well. The front fender does have a couple small dings/dents from age while the back fender appears to be in outstanding original condition with no visible issues of any kind. The tail light bracket and tail light are also in excellent condition and feature nice original factory finishes. Correct front and rear turn signals are also mounted as well. The original chain guard is intact and appears to be in excellent overall original condition. The original and very difficult to find factory original Suzuki “S” mirrors are mounted to a set of original handlebars which feature the original handlebar controls, grips, perches and all correct and original fasteners. The exhaust pipes on this GT380 are in outstanding original condition and are the absolute nicest set of original GT380 pipes I have yet to come across on any GT380 model-they appear to be in overall excellent condition. After careful inspection, the original factory chrome is in outstanding factory original condition. The exhaust set on this GT380 is even clean and in outstanding condition when lying on your back looking up at the bottoms. There are a few scrape marks from use on the bottom but they do not detract from the overall quality. The back sides of the exhaust are also clean, correct and the original Suzuki chrome is in near perfect original condition. I feel the exhaust pipes and head pipes on this GT380 would be acceptable on a show quality restoration or mint original example. The under sides of the exhaust match the condition and quality of the sides and tops as mentioned earlier. Of course they are absolutely rust free and solid as far as I can tell. The exhaust on this GT380 would be nearly impossible to replace and are truly in spectacular condition. The original spokes and rims on this GT80 are also in very, very nice original condition. The rims feature the original and correct factory Suzuki chrome in excellent condition. Of course, the original tires are still mounted to the rims as well and appear to have never been tampered with since being installed at the factory in Japan. The hubs, both front and rear, also of course show nicely and are in great original condition as well with the factory correct finishes still present. The brake, kick and shift levers are original and are not bent or damaged and feature nice original chrome as well. The same can be said for the brake linkage on the front hub as well as the original and correct rear shocks. The original front fork boot rubbers are also buttery soft and flexible. As we work our way up to the instrumentation on this GT380, you will find an outstanding set of gauges mounted. The gauges still feature bright and crisp colors with only slight fade if any and the gauge lenses are clear and correct. The tips of the speedometer and tachometer needles feature a crisp red tip. Mechanically, this GT380 has been in my collection for quite some time and has not been out or ridden for years. I have not had this GT380 out on the road and as mentioned it has been stored for some time so I would recommend some general maintenance such as carburetor cleaning/tuning and setting the ignition points as well and any other general maintenance as recommended by Suzuki. All of the hardware on the engine and the rest of this motorcycle appear to be factory installed and none of the fasteners appear to have ever been removed. I did take a look behind the points cover and the electricals appear as new. The engine itself as well as the engine area and carburetors are very clean, correct and appear to be very well maintained. In fact the original carburetors appear to have never been off this GT380. The rubber intake boot is also original and still soft and flexible and there does not appear to be any visible cracking or deterioration either. Overall, this is a very, very nice original and mostly untouched example of a 1972 GT380. As apparent from the low mileage, this motorcycle was used sparingly and then stored for sometime until being acquired by me. It is not perfect and does have some flaws as mentioned. It is very, very difficult to find a totally original example that has not been molested and has not even been taken apart since it was new. Even the original tires are in usable condition. This would be the perfect example for a complete restoration as all the parts are so nice and all the factory correct hardware is factory installed, correct and in the correct locations. I also of course have a clear title as well as original Suzuki keys for this factory original and correct GT380.
