Up for auction is a 1976 Mercedes Benz 300D Automatic Diesel (non turbo). The major flaw of this car is the rusting out of the body. The floor board is the biggest problem. It requires at least a 4 foot by 2 foot section of sheet metal repair underneath driver’s seat (currently supported by wood board), and underneath this, the fuel lines soon need to be replaced from the gas tank to the fuel injector unit. The rest of the body is indeed in poor shape. I can only assume this car would need MAJOR body work to restore. On January 20th, 2009 it was 21 below zero (yes it started) but the pre-glow relay stuck, frying the pre-glow wiring. I currently have a heavy duty switch running from the battery to the glow plugs which I switch on manually (10 seconds?) then start the car and switch off. I also have jumped the relay for the electric AC cooling fan in front of the radiator/heat exchange coils, since the auto fan on/off circuitry is non functional. The driver’s side rear running light is not working. Fog lights do not work. Passenger side rear seat belt buckle is broken. Missing hood blanket.The windshield leaks slightly at the top. It could use new belts. The tires and brakes are O.K. Although, it is certainly an excellent parts car, I have owned/driven it for 4.5 years, and (even in this condition w/out body/fuel line repair) would not hesitate to drive it anywhere in the continent. It runs great, AC blows cold, heat is fine, cruise control, 25 mpg city, 30 mpg hwy. I have taken it on many 1400 + mile trips w/out a problem.
