Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 2002 Mercedes Benz SLK 230 in YellowStone with Anthracite Leather seats. These are the factory color names/codes. This vehicle is equipped with a 6 Speed Manual transmission which is uncommon for SLK's. I am selling this vehicle due to a knee injury last fall that makes the manual clutch unpleasant to use. I have thoroughly enjoyed this car which has the comfort of a 2 door sports sedan with the thrill of a convertible when the weather is cooperating. In addition to the 24 listing images, I have a dropbox folder that contains 50+ full size images including every scratch, ding, or other item of concern. I've also included the history and datacard there for MB enthusiasts.Video of the car: Car History as I understand It:I believe I am the 3rd owner of this car. It has a clean CarCheck which I am happy to share from March of 2015 when I purchased it.This car was manufactured in April of 2002 and originally titled in Gainesville Florida in May of 2002.It was purchased in January of 2015 by a MB enthusiast in Austin, TX who brought the car back from Florida. He had the Austin MB dealer perform A and B maintenance on the car and address a number of minor issues. He put new Continental tires on the car at the time. They were purchased from Discount Tire with road warranty and I have the documentation for that. The tires went on at 87,725 miles.I purchased the car in March of 2015 and trailered it back to Houston. The car will barely clear onto a U-Haul flat car carrier. ExtrasI was originally going to install aftermarket headlights to upgrade the appearance of the vehicle. I did not do this, due to time constraints, but they are included, new in the box if you want them.I am also going to include the electronics upgrade for the top. There is an aftermarket kit that will let you automate the top with the remote control. I bought it, but between work and remodeling a house I never had time to sit down and follow the instructions to splice it in.The car runs fantastic and is fun to drive. It has ice cold AC and blast furnace heat.I have changed the oil when prompted and upgraded the oil plug to a Fumoto KwikValve that eliminates the possibility of stripping the threads. I like to do my own oil changes as it provides me an opportunity to look around. I normally run oil analysis on my vehicles and the kwikvalve makes it easy to draw a sample without taking a hot oil shower. This vehicle will tell you when to perform maintenance and I follow that schedule. It has not asked to go to the dealer since I have owned it. The previous owner did all of that at 87,000 miles.I do have the vehicle Datacard (aka manufacturer build sheet) that someone was nice enough to pull for me on one of the SLK forums. I'm happy to share this with a serious bidder. The car is wired for Satellite radio and if I can find it the satellite unit comes with it. I have stopped using Sirius due to their shady pricing games.I have two sets of floormats, stock black, and accented gold/black ones. NOTE: I have Amateur Radio Operator plates on this vehicle. They are registered to me personally and will not transfer with the vehicle. When it is purchased it will require inspection, registration, and plates if it stays in Texas. Known Issues: This car has normal wear and tear for it's age, but here is a list of everything I know that is wrong with it:Trunk - one of the plastic fittings is missing where the lid comes down. This is minor.CD Player is removed to provide access to Hydraulic system, and who uses CD's anyway? I have never tried to play a CD. It probably works.Ashtray will not stay in. This is a common problem and I've never dealt with it.The door lock switch inside doesn't always work. They lock fine from the remote control and unlock fine. They just won't lock if you push the button.Lighting for climate control is tempermental and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. The Mercedes radio is tempermental and the volume knob doesn't always work properly. Sometimes it will adjust and sometimes you have to fiddle with it. The cigarrette lighter port is touchy and doesn't play nice with most USB charging adapters. I'll include the one that works. The hood gas shock is weak and needs to be replaced. The hood has to be held or propped up right now.The hydraulic convertible top system has a leak. It is in the back somewhere. Probably the drivers side because this is the only area I can't get to or see. This is a common maintenance problem and started this winter. It is not in the passenger compartment, but I have not been able to locate the leak. There is a kit available for $30 to replace the seals, or you can have the cylinders rebuilt for about $300. It is a very labor intensive activity to remove and reinstall the hydraulics. Here is a manual that explains it: https://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/R170%20SLK-Class%20Cylinder%20Removal.pdf The same company has an exchange service for a full hydraulic set for $300 https://www.tophydraulicsinc.com/en/20-r170-slk or you can replace the one leaking cylinder for $55 to $75. I personally would recommend replacing all of them if you are going to mess with it. That should get you another 15 years of use. You can top off the reservoir which is difficult to access, and the top will work for 3 to 4 uses. It's a small reservoir and there are 5 cylinders, so I'd classify this as a moderate leak. If the leak is the pump the rebuild is $360 on it. All of this is hidden behind trimwork that I do not have time or patience to mess with. The paint is in good condition, but shows minor blemishes in several places when examined closely. Someone touched a couple of them up and you don't see them unless you are right on top of them and looking for them. I think this is normal to good for a car of this age. I believe the car was garage kept until I bought it. I unfortunately do not have space to store it in my garage. I have tried to protect the interior by using a sunshade which is included with the car. I also have some factory touch up paint that the previous owner gave me. I have not used it.The seats are in good condition and are original leather with some wear and tear.the original plastic dash trim was grey. Someone purchased the paint for it and painted the trim black. There are some flecks here and there, but overall it was a good tasteful upgrade. If you are flying in to pick this car up: I am located 4 miles from Houston Hobby Airport (HOU). I'm happy to pick you up from the airport. This is a major hub for Southwest, but other carriers fly in and out of HOU. Houston has two airports. IAH is the other one and it is 40 miles away. Note: Minor Parts and options Here is the part for the hood gas strut. $39 including free shipping on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/142031323606?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 Here is what would be my first choice on the hydraulic cylinders..... $53.95 and probably 3 or 4 hours of work. http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-04-Mercedes-SLK-230-Convertible-Hydraulic-Cylinder-Repair-Kit-More-R170-/281881034350It's worth pointing out:- This includes a $20+ bottle of hydrualic fluid.- A $6 pick set- The precious upgraded seals, only one of which needs to be installed right now. Only want the seals? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-SLK-230-320-Hardtop-Convertible-Hydraulic-Cylinder-Repair-Kit-R170-/282082660783 $19 still includes the refill kit. Or this listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-04-Mercedes-SLK230-Kompressor-Convertible-Hydraulic-Cylinder-Repair-Kit-R170-/281851227784$13 and is just the seals, which is all you need for this vehicle.
