Vehicle Detail
1970 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda 340 I bought this car in Dec. 2012. It was in the exact condition it is now with the exception of the mechanical work I’ve done to it. It has been traded amongst car collector’s as far back as I have paperwork for which is 2000. It belonged to a collector in Florida, then was sold in 2000 to the owner of Racette Ford in Wisconsin, then sold again in 2001 to a collector in Washington state, then sold in 2007 to a collector in Connecticut, who sold it to me in 2012. I have a packet of papers with some receipts and previous owners’ name and phone numbers. I’ve talked to all of them except the owner of Racette. The car is in excellent unrestored condition. It has been taken apart minimally for repairs. The drivetrain replaced at some point with a matching engine and trans from another AAR or T/A. the VIN’s match each other but not the car. The PK numbers on the trans decode to a Hemi 6-pack trans. The original color was FF4 Lime Green Metallic. It can be seen in several photos were the red is flaking off. It has only been painted once. It is all original sheetmetal. There are no dents or accident repair work anywhere. All I did was bring the car back to perfect mechanical running and driving condition. I’m an auto tech at a dealer and I used all original or high quality oem style replacement parts. No made in china crap. I’ll go through the car as methodically as possible: Engine: I restored the carburetors to factory. They are clean, tuned, and operate perfectly with no hesitations, flat spots, or leaks. The choke and fast idle circuits are all in good working order. They start up and idle perfectly. The secondaries open smoothly and without hesitation. This car is easy to drive with no drama at all. It is smooth and responsive at part throttle and when you floor it, it opens up and revs cleanly. I rebuilt the engine itself. I machined the crank mains and rods .010. The pistons are stock replacements. The bore is standard. The heads have new valves, springs, and hardened exhaust seats. The rockers and valve guides are tight. The cam slightly bigger than a stock 340 6 pack cam. It sounds awesome and doesn’t affect the drivability at all. All of the external engine components have been restored while it was out. The distributor is an electronic version, and has been timed and set up properly. The engine runs 110%. It’s smooth, quiet, and literally runs like new. It has the correct 340 T.A. in the casting and is date correct 11-25-69. Transmission: I replaced the transmission fluid and set all the adjustments. It operates perfectly. It shifts smoothly and the timing is correct. It is shifts gently at low throttle openings and will chirp second at full throttle. All the linkages and mounts are in tight. The fluid looks and smells clean. The kick down is adjusted properly and works awesome. Rear end: I replaced the fluid. There was nothing wrong with it. The original markings are still there and are clearly visible. It operates smoothly and quietly. It’s a 3.55 posi 8 3/4. Suspension: Rear- The correct AAR T/A leaf springs are there. I replaced the leaf spring bushings and sway bar end links. Front- The front end is completely rebuilt. I replaced the upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tier rod ends, wheel bearings, upper and lower control arm bushings, and sway bar end links. It’s been aligned and drives straight. It doesn’t pull, clunk, squeak, nothing. The Fast Ratio power steering parts are all there and in good working order. Brakes: New front rotors, pads, calipers, rear drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders. All the lines and hoses are replaced. The master cylinder has been bored and sleeved and works like new. All oem style parts were used. Exhaust: All new Authentic Mopar reproduction exhaust system. Body: There is no major damage anywhere. There is a pic of one minor dent to the right of the trunk in the rear. Theres only been one repaint. All the sheetmetal is original. Green can be seen on each of the panels around edges and what not. There is no rot anywhere. Not on the frames, floors, trunk, doors, inner aprons near the hood hinges, nothing. Only on very small spot on the right rear quarter down low there is slight bubbling. The hood has been reinforced with 2 strips of metal and isn’t bowed. The black on top is the original paint. There are no dents on the roof or rot around the windows. All of the factory seam sealer and undercoating is intact and untouched. The grille, spoilers, lights, bezels, and all that stuff is original. Interior: The interior is all original. It’s in perfect condition. There’s only a small rip in the driver’s seat. All the seat belts and trim is intact. I’ve searched for the build sheet but I can’t find it. Drivability: It starts right up, all the blinkers, horn, washers/wipers dome light, radio, windows, transmission park safety interlock all work perfectly. You could drive this car all day. No overheating, stalling, flooding. The alternator charges great, the tranny drops in and out of gear smooth, It doesn’t shake, vibrate or pull on the highway, nothing. I’ve owned this car for three years and in that time I’ve basically rebuilt the whole car front to back and top to bottom. Mechanically it is 110%. All this car needs is a paint job to be perfect. It’s an all original, well cared for, never abused AAR ‘Cuda that I have done all I can for and I would like to see go to a good home and painted It’s original color. Whoever gets this car is going to be extremely happy with it.
