Vehicle Detail
1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Original & Not Restored Former GM Executive Car This is one of the most incredible 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 cars ever offered on eBay! It is not a daily driver (could be with a little work); it is not a trailer queen (by any means); it is not running or drivable (in its present condition); BUT here is what it is --- It is an unmolested, unrestored, original 1965 442 that reportedly traces its roots back to a GM executive that worked in the Oldsmobile plant in Lansing. History Of The Car: I purchased this car in 2008 from a gentleman who lived in the Detroit area and worked in the Oldsmobile plant when it was in full operation at Lansing. He personally knew the individual who previously owned this car and was able to share stories about their friendship. He identified the previous owner as an individual who worked in the Executive Offices of the Oldsmobile division and ordered the car the way he wanted it to be optioned. One of the really unique "little" special markings on this car is the blue "GM" logo (that normally appears on the door sill plate or the door jam) that is mounted to the dash! That's right. Look at the photos and you will see a "miniature GM blue decal mounted just left of the speaker hole. And while you are at it also notice the different cosmetic appearance of the dash insert where the speaker and 442 emblem appear. The typical dash configuration in this place is a chrome metal grill whereas this particular car has a smooth dash insert that is painted with a flat black color. All of this is unique to this car. Now just think, could anyone other than a GM executive have a car built that would have these special markings? Truth be known, I am not sure if the smaller version of the blue decal is even available, anywhere! Pretty rare and special by my estimation! My original plans were to complete a full frame off restoration on this car just like the ones I had done on my 1966 Tri Power couple and my 1967 Convertible 442 cars. My long range plans were to own one of the vintage "A" body Oldsmobile cars from each of the respective years (1964 / 1965 / 1966 /1967). However, age and health have finally caught up with me and I am now facing the reality that I will not be able to see the completion of my dreams. This car deserves to be owned by someone who will respect the history, originality and completeness of this great car. Someone who will lovingly take the car through the full restoration process and bring it back to life again. Condition Of The Car: While there are some typical rust issues that will need to be addressed the good news is that you have the finest candidate available. This unmolested Muscle Car has what appears to be every single part still in place. If anything is missing it will only be a very minor part and easily located. The bright work (stainless trim) and the body moldings are all in fabulous condition. Although the car has obviously not been driven in several years, the engine turns over freely, the oil in the pan is still real clean looking and everything that should be under the hood is all still there. I have provided an assortment of photos to adequately represent the car's condition. If you have a specific interest in a certain type of photo that is not on the listing page I will be happy to provide additional photos to you upon request. The overall condition of the car is average. The body has typical rust problems behind the rear window and near some of the body seams. The front floor pans appear to be 80% solid (two patches were installed by a previous owner). The trunk area has some rust issues that will probably be more easily fixed with the installation of a new trunk pan. This car is not a "rust bucket" by any stretch of the imagination. It does have some rust issues but the local body shop owner that I have used on my previous projects emphatically told me that this car would not be a great challenge to him. In fact, he is disappointed that I am not going to complete the project! The tires hold air but they are severely dry rotted due to their age (white letter tires that have "letter" designations for their size instead of the typical 205/65/R14 numbering system used today. These tires were probably installed back in the seventies and have remained with the car for many years. It is just incredible that they even hold air! Options & Equipment: The car is a no-thrill, go fast car that was obviously ordered for one purpose and that was to get me to the drag strip on time. The car does not have any significant options (NO air conditioning, power steering or power brakes). It is such a stripped down model (that was intended to go fast) that it even has the back up light delete plates on the rear bumper! If you carefully review the photos you will notice there is no console, no tinted windows, no power windows, etc. It does feature the bucket seat option and the floor shift, four speed manual transmission. I am serious when I say, that someone wanted a bare bones car that did not have any "fluff" on it! The person who selected this car wanted to shift gears and press the accelerator hard to see what that big block engine would do. While you are looking over the photos please note carefully the extra photos we have provided of the floor pan cut out where the floor shifter is installed (not cut out by hand but has the factory seams for the floor shifter). Interior Description: The interior is "presentable" but needs attention. The headliner is coming apart at the seams and sags a little; the bucket seats are average but have black tape on some of the rips; the carpet was removed by the previous owner to be able to honestly present the condition of the floor pans; the dash area looks good; the back seat fabric is better than the front (since it was rarely used); the package tray is gone; the door panels are fair. To be a really nice car it will need a complete interior kit. Rarity & Uniqueness: This car is very special in a number of ways. First of all, 1965 was the first year that Oldsmobile offered the 442 as a separate option. The first 442 car was introduced in 1964 but only as an "after thought" by Oldsmobile executives to compete with the GTO, Chevelle and Mustang. In 1965 the Cutlass received its own designation as a muscle car when the 442 received a separate identity. Secondly, this car is unique for its option list. There are no fancy options but only pure speed and power. Third, the history of the car being owned by a GM executive makes this very attractive. Fourth, the quantity of cars built that year makes this rare and special. The exhaustive book by Kruse states that of the 46,138 Cutlass Hardtop Coupes built in 1965 the "Motorbooks" Restoration Guide on 442 cars says that only 14, 735 were offered as a 442 coupe and only 8,140 of those were equipped with the four speed manual transmission. Fifth, this was the first year Oldsmobile matched the Muscle Car with a big block engine (400 Cubic Inches and a whopping 345 Horsepower). Title And Bill Of Sale: The state of Alabama was not a title state prior to 1975 so a bill of sale with a state tag receipt will be all that is required for transfer of ownership. However, the last title to this vehicle is from Michigan (from the original seller) and the buyer of this car will receive that title along with my bill of sale to sufficiently transfer the ownership to them. VIN & Trim Plates: Photos are provided of the Trim Tag and the VIN plate. The trim tag translates to the following: Build Date 08A = First week of August Body Number = Lansing body # 33471 65-3837 = Holiday Coupe Trim 953-B = Blue vinyl Paint C-C = Provincial White Codes 2L & 4V = Floor Shift & 442 option Mileage: The current mileage on the speedometer shows 82,327 miles which I have no way of knowing whether that is accurate or not. In my 45 plus years of being around the old car hobby it would be my best guess that the mileage is probably correct as the car does not show signs of being "ridden hard and put up wet" with 182,327 miles. Everything looks legitimate for the mileage but, again, I am making no representation of this being the actual miles on the car. Warranty: Please read this carefully - there is NO warranty implied or expressed with this car or this transaction. This car is being sold AS-IS,WHERE IS only. It is the responsibility of the buyer to inspect and confirm the information. I will always make every attempt to represent a car accurately and fairly but in the end the buyer accepts full responsibility for determining the condition, authenticity and background of the car. Any one serious about the car is very welcome to come to my location and we will take the time to disclose everything we know about the car in a thorough, transparent manner. There are not hidden secrets about this car. It is what it is. Shipping Services: This car is available for local pick up only. The car will not be released until payment in full is made with cash or verifiable bank check.
