The 1999 911 was the first all new 911 since 1963 and was the first year of the new watercooled flat six motors. This near mint Porsche has a silky smooth 6 speed manual transmission and a 6 disc cd changer with upgraded audio components.

“The '99 Porsche 911 Carrera-code named 996-is 1.2 inches wider, 6.7 inches longer and 110 pounds lighter than its venerated predecessor. It's roomier, quieter, and better riding, and handles better. Its smaller-displacement engine is more potent but lighter, cleaner, and more fuel and space efficient. The '99 911 also boasts better ergonomics and control placement, and improved crash-survivability.
And, naturally, it's quick: From the rear-drive, naturally aspirated variant it boasts a sizzling 5.0-second 0-60-mph acceleration with an autobahn-tightening 174-mph top speed in sixth gear at its 7300-rpm redline.
Gone, along with the arcane floor-mounted pedals, is the beloved air-cooled engine. (Sob as you will, but make it brief.
The new engine's quite spectacular.) The new 3.4-liter is still mounted behind the rear axle, retains the horizontally opposed six-cylinder arrangement, and maintains 4.65-inch cylinder bore centers: Porsche says the first is the only way to get 2+2 seating with a behind-the-driver engine, the next is for a super-low center of gravity, and the last is, well, tradition.
Beyond these, the new liquid-cooled engine has nothing in common with the old, air-cooled SOHC powerplant. Rather, it's a version of the Boxster's 2.5-liter unit. The tasty mill features chain-driven double overhead camshafts, four (rather than the previous two) valves per cylinder, a forged steel crankshaft mounted in seven main bearings, forged steel crack-split connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, and an ignition coil for each cylinder. It boasts Porsche's VarioCam variable valve timing and a variable intake runner system.
The engine is 2.7 inches shorter and 4.8 inches lower than its predecessor, which along with the elimination of air-cooled plumbing opens up room for a semi-spacious storage area behind the 911's rear seat. While displacement is down 0.2 liter from the 993's, power is up by 15 horses to a rousing 300 at 6800 rpm with torque building smoothly-no neck-snapping coming-on-the-cam-to 258 pound-feet at a modest 4600 rpm. When both are fully dressed-radiators, heating plumbing, sound insulation, and all-the liquid-cooled engine weighs a few pounds less than the air-cooled unit. Neat trick. Further, the new flat-six's exhaust system has been tuned to make it sound much like the old: There's no mistaking the turbine-like whine overlaying a deep-throated raspiness.
The new 996 has the same basic suspension design as before: MacPherson struts up front, with a multi-link design in the rear. But the new execution is significantly different. The rack-and-pinion steering places the steering arms ahead of the front axle for better geometry and reduced bump steer. Rubber-rather than solid-mounted-front lower control arms push the outside front wheel into toe-out in hard cornering, while the rear suspension is designed to simultaneously go into toe-in, "guaranteeing," says Porsche press material, "slight understeer when driven to the limit." A more rigid chassis-torsional stiffness is up 45 percent, bending stiffness 50 percent-helped engineers produce better ride and handling, while eliminating most chassis shake and vibration. The new steering gear offers good, if somewhat light, feel.”
