Vehicle Detail
In 1964 the Harley Pan Head was the biggest bike on the road, Sportsters and 650cc twins from England were the fastest things on two wheels. That all changed when some folks in California began building Volkswagen powered BMW's. Companies such as Wallace, Butterfields, Webley and Bowman began building these conversions and offering kits for the home builder. The conversion process included widening and lengthening the BMW frame, installing an adapter plate to mount the BMW transmission to the VW motor, and a gear conversion inside the transmission to handle the extra power. With readily available parts you could easily have a motorcycle that could out run anything on the road. Even the famous Von Dutch built a VW powered motorcycle for his personal transportation back in the 60's . Blue Moon Cycle specializes in finding obscure European motorcycles, especially German motorcycles. What could be more Germanic than a VW powered Beemer? This is actually the 3rd VW/BMW we have owned. This bike was found in Texas we bought it two years ago, we had it running and idling nicely, I rode it thru the gears and everything seemed to function properly. The only problem was the bike was hard to start, it's kick start only. I recommend converting to one of the small VW electric start kits. We were told motor has a 1800 cc kit. It makes gobs of power. This bike would make an awesome sidecar hauler or just keep it like it is as a piece of 60's history.
