Vehicle Detail

To start with, let me first say that I understand that there is a lot of information in my ad. I also understand that this may be boring to the person who is just looking and not buying. However, for the person who is looking to buy and spend their hard earned money, I feel that there is never too much information. As to myself, I am not a dealer, just a (63) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, I recently retired from managing a Correctional Facility here in Maine having worked there for just shy of (40) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to whom they are dealing with. Also, please check out my eBay feedback which is 100% with (968) transactions. Many of those have been muscle cars which I have sold to individuals all over the country as well as Canada, England, Switzerland and Australia. Some brief history on the Camaro: After two years of watching the Ford Mustang enjoy tremendous success, on September 26, 1966, General Motors finally launched its entry into the pony car segment, the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. Although available with a mediocre six cylinder for volume sales, the Camaro could be equipped with several V8s and a myriad of performance options. Chevrolet stated that the "Camaro" was named after the French word for "comrade." The Camaro was available from the start in hardtop coupe and convertible body styles. The 1967 RS package included numerous cosmetic changes including a blacked out grill with hidden headlights, revised parking and tail lights, upgraded interior trim, and RS badging. Of greater interest to enthusiasts was the SS package which included as standard equipment a modified 350 cid V8, along with simulated air-intakes on the hood, special bumble bee striping, and a blacked out grill. However, the ultimate was the RS/SS Camaro, in which case the RS badging took precedence. The 1968 Camaro received minor changes for its second year. The changes included: · A more horizontal look to the grill; · Vent windows were dropped and "Astro Ventilation" (i.e. flow-through ventilation) was added. · Side marker lights were added; · The addition of multi-leaf rear springs; · Staggered rear shock absorbers; · Restyled center console; · Restyled secondary gauge package with a "sawtooth" design. The sawtooth design didn't contain a clock, so when the optional instrument package was ordered, the clock was combined with the tachometer in the right side instrument pod creating 1968's Tick-Tock-Tach. · Vacuum headlight cover doors; · New striping scheme that wrapped across the top of the nose, down the leading edge of the front fender to a point about four inches above the bumper, then horizontally back to almost the end of the door. · Passenger-side grab handle (mounted above the glovebox) came as part of the Custom Interior or Special Interior groups in 1968 Camaros. 1968 Camaro Production Numbers: NOTE: You may notice that when you total the numbers for each model it varies from the number listed as the total production for that year. This has to do with the record keeping from GM, some models might have been combos such as SS/RS and 1 car might be recorded in both models but only show as one in the total production. Style Production # % of Total Coupe 176,813 75.2% Convertible 20,440 8.7% Z28 7,199 3.1% RS 40,977 17.4% SS 30,695 13.1% Total 235,147 The L48 engine option accounted for 12,496 of the 30,695 SS Camaros built in 1968. In other words, 40.7% of all Camaro SS cars came equipped with the 350CI/295HP engine. So let's take some liberty with these numbers. Assuming that half of the Camaro SS cars had the RS option, that would give us a total of 15,348 Camaro RS/SS cars produced. Knowing that 40.7% of all Camaro SS cars came equipped with the 350CI/295HP engine that gives us a total of 12,496. Finally taking into consideration that only 3.1% of all 1968 Camaros were convertibles, we can extrapolate that of the 15,348 Camaro RS/SS cars built, only 388 were 1968 Camaro SS350 RS convertibles. I know, I didn't even break down the 4-speed and automatic numbers. Remember, don't take this to the bank, but I do think it shows that whatever the number is, it definitely makes my car rare. For your consideration is this beautiful and original 4-speed 1968 RS/SS350 "R1" Matador Red, White Convertible Top, 1968 Camaro. This rare beauty still retains its original vin stamped engine and vin stamped 4-speed transmission as well as the correct 12-bolt Posi rear axle. (Believed to also be original.) Please note that in 1968, the only way to get a 350ci engine in a Camaro, was to order it with the SS option. Having said that, I have the original vin stamped 350ci engine in the car which I believe absolutely proves it is a real SS350. As to the RS option, I also believe the RS option is original to the car based on my observation, and was not installed later as an ad on. However, I do not have definitive documentation to prove that. Born the 1st week of November 1967, virtually all of the important drivetrain components are believed to be original based on their casting number and casting dates. I will have decoded information as well as show decode photos below so there is no doubt in your mind. My Comments: Are you serious! A 1968 Camaro RS/SS convertible 4-speed. Original color combination of red with white top and white stripe. Hideaway headlights. Completely original, vin stamped, drivetrain. Buckets seats with center console and gauges. New paint and restored undercarriage. This car is cooler than the flip side of your pillow and won't break the bank if you decide to buy it. As with all of the cars that I sell on eBay, the easiest way for a prospective buyer to get a sense for my cars is with tons of information and loads of photos and a video. Feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them and respond ASAP. Here is the link to the video: Engine: The original 350/295hp engine starts fine and runs strong. The all important vin number and engine assembly date is on the engine pad and can be clearly seen in my photos. The block casting number and casting date are as they should be. The 3917291 cylinder heads are present and correctly dated. The other important engine components are there as well. i.e. The intake manifold, exhaust manifolds and hidden vin number behind the heater motor. Transmission: The transmission is also the original with the vin stamp present. It is an M20 with the correct assembly date. The original 4106 Hurst shifter handle is present. It shifts up and down the gears as it should with no issues. Exterior: The Camaro has just arrived home from the body shop where a new and beautiful coat of R1 Matador Red paint was applied as well as a new white stripe. The car looks absolutely stunning as the red on white color combinations is one of the most desirable paint schemes you can own. Bumpers are in very good condition as well as the trim work. Door handles and the side mirror are in good condition. The convertible top is in good to very good condition but does have one very small tear on the top surface. (See photo) Also, the Hideaway headlights did not work so I had them disassembled and purchased new door vacuum canisters, new hoses and a new headlight door vacuum relay valve. They now work but only with the bypass relay. Also, I purchased new tail light bezels and a new rear marker light kit. Interior: The interior is in good overall condition. The seats are in nice condition as you will see in the photos. The carpet and underlayment are both new. The dash had a crack in it so I had a new dash cover applied which looks very nice. Door panels are in good condition as well as the console. All original seat belts are present. Door locks and windows are in good working order but the windows need new window whiskers. All "Astro Ventilation" glass is original to the car. Rear Axle: The rear axle is original based on the stampings that that indicate it is a 3:31 Posi unit. No clunking, funny sounds or leaking. Electrical: All exterior lights are in working order to include the headlights, tail lights, running lights, blinkers, backup lights and the plate light. The wipers, horn and gauges are all functional with the exception of the clock. I did replace the fuel tank sending unit so as to make the fuel gauge functional. The heater works fine. The radio does work but it is an AM only. The power top works correctly, goes up and down but is tired and may need a new pump. Trunk: The trunk is in good condition retaining but does not have the spare wheel or jack assembly. Mechanical: The power steer and power brakes to include the emergency brake work correctly. The suspension is good with new body bushings installed. The SS starts, shifts and drives down the road fine. I installed a new speedometer cable as the previous one was noisy. Undercarriage: The undercarriage is where I had problems. When I was asking about the car prior to purchasing it, I asked about the undercarriage and was told it was in good condition. The photos looked good as well. However, when it arrived and I looked at the undercarriage closer on a lift, the undercarriage was a mess. As I could never sell the car this way, I decided to bite the bullet and redo the entire undercarriage. I purchased all American made materials (Goodmark and OER) and had the entire undercarriage redone to include the following: · One piece inner & outer rocker panels for both sides; · One piece full floor pan; · All convertible floor pan braces; · Both front bucket seat stands; · Firewall to floor pan panels; · Lower LH door jamb patch panel; · LH cowl assembly panel; · LH firewall body mount brace support for torque box; · RH quarter jamb panel; · Sub frame body mount bushings. Now I feel comfortable that the car is solid and I have completed all of the expensive work. My loss your gain but I simply can't do it any other way. The RS/SS350 Camaro Comes With the Following: · Original numbers matching 350/295hp block. (Vin Stamped); · Original numbers matching M20 4-speed transmission. (Vin Stamped); · Original 4106 Hurst Shifter Handle; · Original 3917291 heads; · Original 3919803 intake; · Original posi rear axle; · Original "Astro Ventilation" glass; · Original seat belts; · Original exhaust manifolds; (I believe they are.) · Original Delco AM radio. I do not have a Maine title for this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS350 as Maine does not issue titles for vehicles that are more than (15) years old. I have sold cars all over the country as well as Canada, England, Switzerland and Australia and have never had a problem. The car will come with a Bill-of-Sale, the Maine registration signed over to the new owner and a copy of the Maine law regarding titles which is on a form issued by the Maine Motor Vehicle Department. Thank you again and good luck bidding. On Jul-02-13 at 17:38:08 PDT, seller added the following information: INTERESTING TRADES CONSIDERED???On Jul-05-13 at 13:53:15 PDT, seller added the following information:I've had some questions regarding my hood ornaments. People are saying the ornaments are fake as they were the 1967 ornaments not 1968. Here is what the CRG Camaro site says: At model introduction in September, 1966, the SS Camaro used a special SS hood that included chromed trim that mimicked the appearance of finned oil coolers. For the 1968 model year, the chromed hood trim for SS396 changed from the simulated finned cooler to a set of simulated carburetor velocity stacks. The early 1968 model year SS350 continued to receive the 1967-style finned hood trim. My 1968 Camaro is an early built Camaro SS350 with a build date of the 1st week of November 1967. This confirms that the hood ornaments on my 1968 Camaro are the correct ones.
