Vehicle Detail
1948 Chevy 3/4 Ton 5 Window Custom Cab Pickup Truck I bought this truck from the original owner in 1994 and have been slowly customizing and restoring it. I have over $9,000 invested. The new Chevy 350 V8 purrs like a kitten, with only about 45 miles on it. It roars like a lion with the tap of the pedal. A Turbo 350 transmission is controlled by a Hurst racing shifter. It manually shifts as fast as you can bump the shifter... or let it shift automatically. Electrical is converted to 12 volt. Four wheel power disc breaks. As an added treat, I installed a power steering unit and linkage fabricated by West Coast Customs specifically for this truck. This allowed me to have power steering despite the limited space after putting in the 350 V8. The steering column is a tilt steering out of an S10. The rear end and driveline is out of a 1955 Chevy Pickup. The original 1948 driveline was not compatible with the new transmission and the '55 is a little "beefier". The original heater works great. The 1948 pickup originally had vacuum powered window wipers. I had that uninstalled and intended to put a wiper motor out of a small Chevy. That still needs done. Its 65 years old, so there rust, but it is only surface rust which is easily removed in the body/paint process. The cab corners have identions where the previous owner added spare tires. Your body guy will want to fab in metal quarter panels, which should be a simple process for him. The previous owner also moved the gas tank up behind the seat like in the later models, so he could install the passenger side spare. I had intended to move it back down during the body/paint phase. I have brand new headlight rings which I'll throw in for free. The rear fenders are throw aways. There are several companies out there that sell brand new metal OEM fenders for this truck for about $200 each. To sum it up, this truck is mechanically complete. It is not for the faint of heart. It will go from 0 to 60 in nothing flat. It is now ready to be turned into a sleeper classic or a racer. You choose. It is ready for body and paint, so where it goes from here is your choice. NADA guide puts the value of an unrestored 1948 Chevy at $6,300 for low retail. This truck has been carefully restored/customized mechanically with only the best of the best. NADA midrange value for a truck at this stage is $15,300. I will let you have it at $6,900. This is an incredible investment with a huge return, because once you complete the body and paint, it is worth up to $39,200. That is over 100% return on your money even after accounting for the cost of body and paint. I hate to part with a truck that has been a part of me for 19 years. But, now its time for the next chapter in its 65 year life. I hope somebody loves it as much as I do and finishes the job. Maybe someday it will shine again.
