Vehicle Detail

1964 DODGE CUSTOM 880 KCMO POLICE UNIT In 1964 Kansas City Missouri's freeway system was growing...I-70, I-29, I-35 were all adding exits, entrances and interchanges. The KCMO Police Department was ill equipped to enforce speed limits on the freeways with 6 cylinder Plymouths. The Missouri State Highway Patrol's vehicle selection for 1964 was the huge Dodge Custom 880 sedans. Learning of this, the KCPD "piggy-backed" the State Patrol's order and ordered 3 880's for themselves. (This allowed them to purchase the 880's at substantial savings.) The three were equipped and named "Freeway Enforcers". The three were all white with blue interiors and powered by infamous MOPAR big blocks, either 361 or 383. This auction is for a tribute to those first freeway chase cars, lovingly creatted by a veteran of that department. HISTORY This 880 began life in Topeka, Kansas. It was ordered heavily equipped with 361 V8, Automatic Transmission W/Pushbutton Shift, P/S, P/B, A/C, Day/Night Mirror, Remote Driver's Mirror, Astrophonic Transistor AM Radio W/Rear Speaker, Trunk Light, Back-up Lights, Retractible Seat Belts and that spectacular green tinted glass all around. It also has the Dodge 50th Anniversary Steering Wheel. The current owner purchased it in 1992 with a scant 65K on the odometer. It was rust-free. THE CUSTOM 880'S WERE LOW PRODUCTION MODELS BUILT TWO YEARS ONLY. THE TRANSFORMATION Starting with a cosmetic restoration, the 880 was painted on the sides due to parking lot rash and the bumpers (unusual interchangeable) were replated. The conversion to police car specs consisted of dual exhaust with correct turn-down tips, HD shocks all around, re-arched rear springs and the switch to 15" rims. Sharp eyed MOPAR fans will note 1980's style 15X7" rims were chosen over the original 14" and the 1960's 15X6" police wheels for greater stability and handling. New Kelly 835/75/15 matched the 1964 police tire size and were added along with a new spare. All headlights were switched to Halogen units for safety. EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT An exhaustive effort was required to accurately recreate the original KCPD 880, including utilizing the correct equipment from the original vendors. Door markings were researched and re-created by a sign shop. Correct license plates were created by the same company that made them in the 1960's. A correct Federal lightbar was located and two Twin Beacon Ray light assemblies were rebuilt and outfitted with NOS lenses. A Federal Interceptor electronic siren was refurbished and uses a correct Dominator speaker from a small company in Kansas City. The equipment also includes an (inactive) Motorola MOTRACK radio and scanner, Midland CB radio, correct Morton Pitt locking gun rack and Kustom Electronics period radar, from another local vendor in Chanute, Kansas. The equipment also includes alternating headlights and the correct fender-mount Unity spotlight. NOTE: PER EBAY REGULATIONS, ALL EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT IS UNOPERABLE AT THIS TIME. DISPLAY MATERIALS This great car includes several items to continue it's success as a competitive show car. The detailed trunk still has the original cardboard panels and jack instructions, with a new mat. It has the original jack and a new spare. It has an original Motorola trunk unit and fire extinguisher. It also includes a wood equipment box built by KCPD personnel. The trunk includes a vintage fingerprint kit, wool blanket, traffic helmet, department issued baton (also made by dept personnel), department marked flashlight, and a hand-held GE radio that pre-dates walkie-talkies. The original Owner's Manual is included, along with period printed material from the department. Finally, a display board is included that features the history and some rare Chrysler publications. A mannequin attired in prison attire resides in the back seat. THE REST OF THE STORY Upon completion, the car was shown throughout the KC area and moved with the owner to Arkansas, where it was a featured vehicle in a Police Museum from 1996-2002. Since that time it has been stored in a climate controlled garage. It has only been driven 1000 miles since purchased in 1992. It comes with a fresh battery and fluid change. It has had all rubber brake components replaced and was filled with silicone fluid. It is still rust free with perfect original chrome, 50% original paint, original interior. The green tint glass is excellent, with no de-lamination of the flat pieces. The windshield has minor wiper marks and two minor chips. The engine and trans have never been opened up. It does leak some and one heat riser rattles. It starts, stops and handles great, with no smoke. The AC is not charged and needs to be converted, but the compressor checks out OK. The original engine bay is clean, but not detailed. The interior has perfect door panels and seats. The original carpets have no holes, but could stand to be re-died. Some of the windlace is unwinding. One panel of the padded dash is wrinkled and we've tried to photograph it. The tires are excellent and still bear the mold marks. The sale includes an indoor car cover. RE-LISTED,RESERVE REDUCED BY THOU$AND$. INTERESTING TRADES ALWAYS CONSIDERED.
