It appears Good Guys finish last; yesterday a new customer of ours promised to buy this very reasonably priced ’66 Vette for his wife (a Corvette Lover) and made us an offer we just couldn’t refuse. This was on Sunday/Mother’s day, reluctantly we agreed to sell it to him and pulled the auction around 2PM, with the proviso that if we were not paid in full by 2PM on Monday it’s going back up for sale. Well you know the rest of the story. She never even came by to see the car, she just told her husband I don’t want a classic Corvette you are just buying for yourself. She ended up with new living room furniture instead. Just in time for the Laker’s playoff game tonight.
Now, back to car.
You just never know what you will find on the other end of a ringing phone. This time is was a classic car appraiser I have known and worked with for years. He needed a 1966 Corvette Convertible appraised for an estate. The car was in Temecula, CA (North San Diego County), about 60 miles from my shop (Corvette Mike) in Anaheim, CA. The Corvette was covered and hidden away and had been sitting for about 12 years according to the saddened widow who had recently lost her beloved of 29 years. I examined the car and found that the tires were flat and the paint needed a good buff, but it appeared to be very complete, correct and intact. I did not bother to try and start it, but I could tell from the condition and care of this Corvette, it would be an easy task to get it running.
It turned out that the sister of the deceased owner, who lived in northern California, was awarded the car that I was to appraise and was parked at the house the widow received and there was some tension between the two women. While I did my initial examination of the car, I noticed that the frame condition was not like what you would typically see in California, so I asked where the car was from and the widow said they bought it years ago from a dealer in Tennessee. That explained the scale and two small repairs just forward of the rear wheels.
After an hour of looking over the car and discussing my findings with the two women, I had all the facts to properly appraise the car and present it to them. A few weeks later, after the attorneys involved and all the other family members had their say, the sister offered the car to me and a deal was struck.
The car was flat-bedded to my shop in Anaheim and given straight to our service department to further assess the condition and put the car back into a safe running condition. Service replaced all the spark plugs, replaced the fuel line, rebuilt the master cylinder, replaced all four brake calipers and pads, removed and installed four new tires, changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the battery and fittings, drained all the fuel from the entire system, replaced the fuel filter and clean, repaired and tuned the carburetor. The car was then sent to have the paint buffed and the car detailed.
