Over $80,000 was invested in a nut-and-bolt, concours restoration to a 180bhp 2,778 cc inline six-cylinder engine with overhead cam and fuel injection, four-speed automatictransmission, front A-arms and rear swing axle and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 94.5" The famed Mercedes-Benz 190SL drew its power from a 105 horsepower four cylinder engine. For 1963, Mercedes-Benz introduced that car’s successor, the 230SL, powered by a 170 horsepower inline six. That model was succeeded by the 250SL in 1967, and finally, by the 280SL model in 1968. The 280SL was part of the “New Generation” of Mercedes-Benz cars that featured new bodies and improved suspension. The 280SL also featured a more powerful engine, with its cylinders bored to increase displacement, resulting in a boost to 180 horsepower and nearly 20 more foot-pounds of torque. The 280SL was promoted as “the sum total of everything the Mercedes-Benz engineers have learned about high-performance sporting machinery.” It remained in production until the end of 1971 before the company launched the new 350SL. The 280SL we have the pleasure of offering here is a remarkable car that has remained in single family ownership its entire life. The Mercedes-Benz was ordered directly from the factory in 1969 by Mr. William Fitzgerald, a prominent Boston businessman. He had tried desperately to purchase one from the local dealers but was told that production orders were filled for years ahead of him. Improvising, Mr. Fitzgerald then contacted his dear friend, speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Edward McCormick, to assist him in procuring a 280SL. Though the color and equipment were not entirely to Mr. Fitzgerald’s desires, this car was made available for October European delivery. The vendor reports the paperwork for the delivery is available with the car as is the correspondence from Speaker McCormick. The 280SL is an excellent, regularly maintained highly original car that has recently benefited from a thorough and comprehensive cosmetic restoration that included new paint and a freshened interior. Showing just under 69,500 miles, which is believed to be correct from new, the 280SL is complete with the optional hard top, limited slip differential and air conditioning. The vendor reports that the 280SL is truly a time capsule car that even retains its original seatbelts and is certainly one of the most genuine and honest examples in existence. Mechanically, the Mercedes has never required a thorough mechanical rebuild as it has been meticulously maintained for the last 35 years.
