Vehicle Detail

The Pennsylvania State University is offering for bid, a 1967 Porsche 912. The vehicle was donated to PSU about 15 years ago. The Porsche was owned by a Penn State Alum who passed away. His wife (who is also an alum) donated it to the University as an opportunity for students to restore it and then sell it to support student-related activities. Students assisted in some of the restoration including rebuilding the engine, but some of the work was also provided by a professional restorer. At the time, it was in need of a total restoration. As work progressed, it was decided that the original body was too far gone to do necessary repairs, so a donor car body was located in South Carolina. The donor car had a good body, but was a “roller”, meaning that it was “engineless”. The original engine was rebuilt with new pistons, cylinders, carbs, and various other ancillary items. The engine has been run on a test stand several years ago after the rebuild, for several hours, but has never been run while in the car. The throttle cable has not been attached. The brakes are new Brembo units to enhance the stopping power. The car was painted in PSU blue, and some upholstery work was performed to the driver’s seat. Some parts are missing, including the passenger seat and some chrome trim pieces, but these should not be too difficult to acquire. As you can see from the various pictures, there is still some assembly required to finish the project, so it is for sale “as-is”. The floor is solid, and the only evidence of rust is a small amount in the right front of the trunk. Although not pictured, there are hub caps included with the vehicle. This vehicle is an excellent opportunity for someone to finish, and have as a good “driver”, or use as the basis for a complete restoration. If you are reading this, you probably already know of the astronomical prices long nose 911’s are bringing, so it should be of no surprise that the 912 is headed in the same direction. Please note that we are not guaranteeing that all parts are with the car. We have mentioned some notable parts that are missing, but be advised, there could be others. The VIN on the title does match the VIN plate on the car, but the engine is from the original body, so does not match. The car is being auctioned to support an endowment in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering called the "BioRenewable Systems and Biological Engineering Leadership and Communications Development Fund.” This fund supports development of leadership and communication skills for students in the ABE department so that they can leave Penn State with stronger leadership abilities for their future careers. This does have a PA Title and it is branded “mileage exceeds the mechanical limits”. We would do a title transfer for it. 1967 Porsche VIN #461954 Please also note that the vehicle does have a "salvage" title. The vehicle was never in a crash and is not damaged beyond repair. The reasoning for the salvage title is as follows: "The vehicle was donated to PSU as an opportunity for students to restore it and then sell it to support student-related activities.. The professor in charge has determined the vehicle can no longer serve the purpose and would like to dispose the vehicle. After checking with agencies that we work closely in vehicle related issues, the recommendation is to change the vehicle title to salvage title because of the car conditions. The purpose of the move is to relieve any potential liability against PSU after the sale. We also reviewed the matter with Risk management office and they concur with the decision" If you have any more questions about the reasoning behind the title being a salvage title you can contact Tina Gregory at 814-863-2526 directly.
