First, it marked the debut of the legendary XK120, and it was also where Jaguar unveiled their new saloon, the Mark V. While the XK120 had stolen the headlines with its stunning looks and twin-cam inline-six, the Mark V had a few tricks up its sleeve as well. The Mark V was the first all-new Jaguar since the end of World War II. Since it beat the XK120 to production, it was the first Jaguar with hydraulic brakes, independent front suspension, pressed steel wheels and the first production car to use sealed ball-joint mechanisms in the front end. The Mark V was available in closed saloon or open drophead-coupe bodywork with either 2 ½ liter or 3 ½ liter single-cam pushrod six-cylinder engines. Curiously, the Mark V only remained in production for 28 months and just over 10,000 were built before it was replaced by the more modern XK-powered Mark VII. This 1951 Mark V sunroof-saloon is from the final year of production. It is a solid and complete car in very restorable condition. While restoration is the obvious path, alternately, it may be an ideal example for fans of preservation cars, as it could be mechanically restored and driven with the cosmetics as-is. The charm of this particular Mark V is that while it certainly has a fresh-from-the-barn quality, it is not excessively corroded or seriously damaged. It is very complete with the original body, trim and interior all in surprisingly good order. The original, 3 ½ liter pushrod engine was replaced many years ago with a twin-overhead cam XK unit, along with a manual gearbox. The cylinder head number is W 9553-8; the W indicating it was sourced from an early XK120. The engine is complete and sound, though would likely need expert attention before being a runner. The interior has survived quite well with gray upholstery appearing mostly in good order, though in need of a thorough cleaning. Carpets appear a bit worse for wear, but are intact and could be preserved if the new owner so desires. Wood trim is complete and generally quite solid, presenting in respectable condition considering its age. In spite of the heavy patina, the big Jag’s body lines are still quite beautiful. Paint is non-serviceable and there is some surface rust and a scuff or two, but the body shell and chassis are surprisingly solid and free of major damage. Chrome trim and brightwork are similar in condition, needing full restoration to get the best results but complete enough to leave alone if one were to choose to keep the barn-fresh look. Overall, this is an interesting and attractive car that would present a fairly straight-forward restoration project. The addition of the XK120 drivetrain would make it a very enjoyable driver for the enthusiast who prefers the asphalt rather than the show field. Please call 877-550-9627 for further details!
