Vehicle Detail
Description Please note: The listing may be ended early in the event a local sale is made. Also local inspections are more than welcomed and are highly encouraged. Description: Up for auction is a 1973 2.0L Porsche 914 (VIN# 4739922679) that has 93,932 miles on the odometer (actual mileage unknown). The car is being sold AS-IS with NO-Reserve and will be described to the best of my knowledge below. Please assume this to be a full restoration 2.0L car and not something that you can just hop in and drive. The car does run and drive but due to its condition should be towed after purchase. Body/Exterior: The best thing that I can say about the exterior is that this car would look great to a blind guy on a moonless night in a dark alley from 50 feet away. Seriously though, from a distance the car actually doesn’t look that bad, but up close you see ALL the issues. The body seems to be straight, the paint is shiny but shot, and the car has the normal 914 rust in the hell-hole, rear trunk edge, and right base of the windshield, (and probably more). The good news is that the door gaps still seem to be OK so the car is fixable, but please view the photos so you can get an idea of any issues that may exist. The trim/rubber/plastic components are all weathered too so please assume that those will also have to be replaced. Also, the trunk lock button is missing and both of the outer door handles don’t work so plan on having to do some lock work. Interior: There’s not much to say about the interior other than its pretty rough. The bottom seat cushions are torn, the dash is cracked, and the carpet is shot. The driver side door crank also skips while rolling up so you may have to either replace the handle or the window regulator. Assume that the entire interior will have to repainted, recovered, recarpeted, and reupholstered. Engine: The engine is the desirable 3 stud head 2.0L with a single progressive carb which actually runs pretty darn good considering the fact that I have not done anything to it. It does not smoke, it has no unusual noises, and it seems to have good power. It appears that the prior owner may have given the car a fresh tune up/wires/coil prior to parking it in 2010 but other than that I have no history or data on it. The engine does have a small oil leak from the front round case plate (The large black one by the front motor mount), if I get a chance I’ll see if I can seal that up this week and I’ll update the ad if I do. Please note that the throttle is “touchy” due to the fact that the cable needs to be cleaned or lubed. I want to also note that the engine release cable is broken. There’s a replacement cable in the trunk so if I get a chance I’ll install it this week and update the ad. Transmission: The transmission actually shifts surprising good. All 5 gears are easy to get into and the notorious 1st gear grind seems to be minimal at best (example, depress and hold the clutch for about 2 seconds and it shifts into 1st great, do a quick shift and it grinds for just a split second. I’ve only driven the car up and down the block twice so I’ll try to take it out a few more times so I can update how the car shifts, right now though it appears that this is a pretty good trans and a likely overdue fluid change and clutch adjustment may make it even better. Brakes: The condition of the brake system is unknown and the pedal is low. It appears that the rear calipers need to have the air gap set so I’ll try to do that this week and update the brake situation then. The E-brake handle is also missing so the condition of the E-brake system is unknown. Steering: The steering has tight spots while turning and the aftermarket steering wheel seems to rub on the column. It’s likely the problem is just the wheel so if I get a chance this week I’ll loosen it and see if the problem goes away. Tires: The tires all have a lot of tread and match but are severely dry-rotted and therefore should not be driven on (hence the towing recommendation). The wheels are a matching Porsche insignia chrome set with some rust spots on both the wheels and the hubcaps. Electrical: Most of the lights and gauges are functional on the car but the fuel gauge, speedometer, fog lights, horn, dome light, and 80’s fantastic radio do not function. The right turn signals are also not working but I can hear the flasher clicking when the turn signal lever is moved, so there’s a good chance that the bulbs are just burnt out. Paperwork: The car was last registered in 2010 but comes with a clean CA title and current CA non-Op so no back fees will be due. Any questions please email or call (951)323-9396, Mike On May-07-13 at 21:17:49 PDT, seller added the following information: Update: I was able to replace the engine lid cable so that is done. I also resealed the lower case plate on the engine so the oil leak should be taken care of. Finally, the aftermarket steering wheel was loosened slightly and it made the steering feel better, so I believe that the aftermarket wheel will just have to be shimmed. If I can check anything else I'll make a note of it before the auction ends.
