Vehicle Detail
Undoubtedly one of the rarest of its kind in existence, this is an exceptionally clean & straight, original, 2nd owner investment grade rust free Arizona survivor 1987 Toyota 4x4 SR5 Extra Cab 22RTE Turbo short bed pickup truck with only 117,500 original miles that always starts & runs & drives excellently. Virtually mint cosmetically & mechanically, everything works as designed. Engine, transmission, suspension are tight as a drum. No rust, no rattles, no squeaks, no leaks, no knocks, no smoke, no mechanical issues except for the power antenna which has a bent mast & the e-brake cable which needs replaced. Interior is exceptionally clean & original with no tears in any of the fabric & original radio tape deck. AC blows ice cold and has been professionally converted to R134a. Original owners manual is in the glove box. Original jack & complete tool kit in green case are stowed behind the passenger seat. Spare tire is mounted under the bed. This truck always passed Arizona emissions and was born with Federal rated 49 state emissions equipment and features stock cat & exhaust with the exception of a Flowmaster muffler & tailpipe w/ chrome tip which is not at all loud. Except for the muffler, tailpipe & rims, the truck is bone stock but has every SR5 factory option available at the time except a dash clock. Tires are 4 new BFG All Terrain. 30 inch on 15 inch black aluminum rims. They've been professionally balanced during recent alignment. The original aluminum SR5 rims will be included with the sale (see pictures). They'll need a good cleaning and polishing should the new owner decide to mount them. She's never been wrecked and has no rust or bondo but was repainted with the factory OEM black paint code about 10 years ago by the 2nd owner because he didn't like the factory graphics decals (and who can blame him.) It's obviously a high quality paint job that's held up nicely over the last decade and even on close inspection it's very difficult to tell it was repainted. The 2nd owner was an older retired gentleman, very anal in terms of upkeep, who bought it back in 1991 with only 37k miles. He replaced the timing chain & guides plus clutch & both front & rear crank seals at 98k miles. I bought it from him only a couple months and a few hundred miles ago which is why it's described as a 2nd owner truck but technically I'm the 3rd owner. Since then I've attended virtually every detail & replaced anything not like-new plus changed every drop of fluid & filter the vehicle holds, the spark plugs (NGK), distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, air filter, valve cover gasket & grommets, plus plus professionally adjusted the valves to factory spec, & set the timing. Naturally the 5 speed manual transmission and all 4x4 actuation works perfect as designed with good tight clutch & smooth shifting transfer case plus OEM manual locking Aisin hubs. The rare Japanese-style bed (distinguished by the lip rails) is protected by a spray on bed liner and the tailgate fuctions normally. For a truck going on 26 years old the body is exceptionally straight & clean with absolutely zero rust but does have some tiny dings & minor blemishes that are very hard to notice until a few feet away. For example, there's the 1st front left shot that if you look at the top portion of the left fender, about 5 inches forward of the driver's door, you can see a small depression. There's another smaller than that in the center of the tailgate. There's one or maybe two more smaller even than that around the vehicle but that's it. Nothing's gouged or hurt the paint. The chrome plastic front grill has a crack in it which can easily be mended with some epoxy or entirely replaced for under $60 from the aftermarket. The power antenna has a bent mast and so doesn't extend & retract properly. That too can be replaced via the aftermarket but I didn't want to be the first person ever to remove the right front fender. The e-brake doesn't work because part of the cable snapped. Directly under the left side view mirror are a couple small drips of glue that stained the paint when the 2nd owner tried to fix the broken mirror. I bought and installed a new used rare power mirror mirror for $85 from a connection that works great. (The only other mirror like it is selling for $165 on eBay.). The interior is as tight as they get with no stains or rips in the fabric. The power windows, mirrors & doors locks all work. The only blemish inside are the small gray plastic cups that sit behind the interior door latch handles which are missing. (Turns out I just found one of the cups in the glovebox after this posting and I will install it so only one will be missing). The only other minor blemish is the fact that the aftermarket tint on the driver's window has been scuffed over the years from the power window going up & down. Impossible to tell unless you get up close & scrutinize. Cheap & easy to rectify. There's a professionally installed U-Haul brand class III receiver hitch under the rear bumper which somebody probably paid $300 for back in the day. Why this particular truck is likely the rarest of its kind in the world is that since they came out I've never seen, in over 10 years as an afficianado & collector, a 2nd generation pickup extended cab 4x4 with the Japanese style bed, ever -- let alone a 22RTE Turbo with 5 speed manual and only 117k miles with no rust that lived its whole life in Tucson, Arizona where the US Air Force stores to preserve all of their old aircraft. These beds were a very rare option & very cool, unique & subtly different. These gasoline turbo trucks were only offered in the USA in 1986 & 1987. They were presumably a stop gap measure by Toyota to add more power for the American consumer just before they released the lousy & inefficient 3.0 V6 in 1988. Re: the 22RTE there were the 49 State Federal models & the CA only emissions models (less desirable). Only the pickups had the rare, 2 year only, Turbo manual transmissions which had a lower 1st gear & bigger bearings than normally aspirated trucks with the 22R. They were essentially equipped with the stronger V6 transmission & V6 rear differential but before the V6 was released! The 86-87 4Runner Turbos only came with an automatic transmission which robbed a lot of power and were thus always less desirable. All of these rare 22RET trucks also came equipped with the stronger, heavier duty V6 rear differential with dual cross pins, open carrier and 4.10 gear ratio which weigh 13lbs. more than a 4 cylinder differential due to the bigger bearings, thicker mount flange and one extra rib gusset. One such 4Runner, California equipped with auto trans (doubly less desirable) just bid up to $7379 but didn't meet the reserve: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SR5-/321029151878;jsessionid=BC1062D6A6D34D67234F28E675AE0AC6?item=321029151878&ViewItem=&forcev4exp=true Albeit a 4Runner I consider that truck LESS valuable than this truck because it is CA emissions (less power), an automatic (less power) plus a year older with 30k more miles. One just like this pickup just sold for $6505 in New Mexico but had 162k miles and had strange black paint on the bottom half, not to mention way less details: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-Toyota-SR-5-4X4-Xcab-Turbo-pickup-162k-miles-loaded-w-options-very-nice-/251183344016?item=251183344016&ViewItem=&forcev4exp=true And yet another just sold in MN for $6500 with 165k miles: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-Pickup-Extra-cab-5-speed-Turbo-SR5-4x4-Original-/251193857214?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a7c5214be If somebody's thinking that's a lot to pay for an old 4x4 then I defy them to go to any used truck lot across the USA and find another 4x4 built like this, that performs like this, has the aftermarket support as this, or holds its value like this -- for the equivalent money. There's just no such thing. Since this listing several people have commented that this truck would be worth thousands more as a Marty McFly "Back to the Future" Replica with roll bar & KC lights but that's just not my cup of tea, although anybody could make that happen for about $500. For any questions prior to bidding (or after) please don't hesitate to call 520-977-0112. This truck has been represented as accurately as possible by a longstanding & reputable eBay seller whose sold tons of classic vehicles without a complaint & now lives in Arizona but who originally hails from Chicago and understands what folks from the Rust Belt back East are looking for in an original classic rust free survivor. This is definitely such a vehicle and stands absolutely unique as a terrific investment opportunity that has virtually no equals in the 4x4 world. Clean Arizona "A" Paper Title is notarized & ready to go. Note that your bid in this public auction constitutes a "legally binding contract for sale" so please don't bid impulsively or without the funds to abide by the terms below. Also note that it's very rare to be able to buy a vehicle on eBay from a seller who has more positive feedbacks than the dollars bid. I mention this only because over 12 years ago when I started on eBay a Pwr. Seller friend who runs a pawn shop in Philly told me the rule of thumb on eBay is try to never bid more than a dollar per feedback, that is, if the seller has over 500 positive feedback it's generally safe to assume you can confidently spend $500 with them. The idea is that no longstanding reputable seller is willing to ruin their entire hard earned reputation over one transaction. RULES FOR ALL BIDDERS: A $1500 PayPal deposit is required within 24 hrs. of the auction close and the FULL BALANCE is due within 72hrs. after that. That means full & complete payment is due within 4 days of auction close no matter what anything else you've read on this auction says. If winner needs, for tax reasons, to make more than the minimum initial payment before the New Year, that's fine. For balance payment I will only accept either cash in person, overnighted cashier's check, wire bank transfer to a Washigton Federal Bank account, or a PayPal payment for the balance can be negotiated for half the PayPal fees so long as it's not in the form of an E-check. Transport/shipping of vehicle is ENTIRELY up to the buyer but I will help in all possible ways with shipping coordination from a commercial location so long as you understand that the shipper/transporter MUST be able to EMAIL me a Bill of Lading since I don't have a fax machine and truckers don't move cargo without bills of lading. After full payment per terms above the vehicle's storage is free for the first 20 days. After that a $15 per day storage fee will be charged.
