Commanders are unique with front sheet metal but from the cowl back they share all with the Champions. I searched for this car for 2+ years. I wanted a Commander Starlight Regal Deluxe in the best condition possible. I came across an advert and then flew to California to inspect it. It was shipped to Minnesota in July 1999. It has always been inside and dry. The brakes were completely rebuilt with all new parts and new brake lines plus a Turner dual master cylinder was installed, all fluids regularly changed, wiring corrected and lighting components replaced. The seats were rebuilt; springs reinforced and they are ready for new seat covers. The old seat covers are on over the rebuilt seats. This is a “California Car” and it has never had any serious rust. It is solid, all there and you really have to see it to appreciate how a California car can be so solid & original. The car has the Regal Deluxe trim features: rare stainless steel gravel guards, rare stainless rocker trim panels, wheel trim rings, fender spears, very rare Regal Deluxe interior door trims, special window handle cranks, etc. This is a “California Car” it never had a firewall heater or in floor under seat heater. It was built at the Studebaker Los Angeles plant. I drive this car several times a year. It runs and drives well. This Spring I know it needs a checkup; point check, firing order, timing, lubrication and standard maintenance items checked out, etc. All kinds of usual stuff has been replaced: coils, points, spark plug wires replaced, etc. It just came out of it’s Car Bag a week ago. Seems a bit sluggish and rough running right now and needs to get some run time. As I say it needs some tune up maintenance. It has been very reliable and I would go anywhere locally in it. Things that I know or can recall that are not working: windshield wiper unit not working (never driven in wet weather), radio not working, The steering wheel is fragging due to the plastic being old. Schrock Brothers has a new steering wheel for this model if you want one. Paint is older but has that patina saying it is vintage. Color scheme is unique and was done years ago. Nickname has become “The Bumble Bee”. There is some tape covering screw holes that were there from a previously installed sun visor. Drivers door handle does not work from the inside; needs reconnecting under the door panel. I am probably missing something and if that comes to me i will add a note to this auction description. There is some bubbling paint at corners of the trunk lid and a few bubbles along the seam where the rear fenders mount to the body. paint has small chips, scratches, etc. This paint is probably 30 plus years old. the chrome has it’s flaws but generally matches up with the vintage condition. Those side panel pics show solid fenders and door panels; they are s-o-l-i-d! that condition is hard to come by. You will not see too many dash boards with such a beautiful classic view. The “BIG positives” here are the complete original condition, it is in driving & stopping condition. The bottoms of the doors and floors are still solid (that’s a big deal) on these cars. The trunk floor is solid but some surface rust in corner areas per pictures. I will assist in coordinating shipping with you. The best quotes I’ve seen and have had Studebakers shipped with is Peg Trucking: www.pegtruckinginc.com Get a quote and ask for the Studebaker discount. The car can stay here for some weeks after purchase and will be kept inside. Overall this is a unique car with the highest trim level for a 1950 Studebaker. It draws crowds even in a less than pristine condition, because it unique in automobile design and it appears in such good condition for a 60+ year old classic. Studebakers of this class are getting hard to come by in this original complete condition. Plus all the Champion owners know when “the” Commander arrives! IF YOU START WITH A BODY THIS GOOD AND A CAR IN THIS COMPLETE CONDITION YOU WILL HAVE AN ENJOYABLE PROJECT. Frankly driving these cars in their older condition is starting to be more fun than protecting the world from a totally restored car with perfect paint and finishing. After all it is the Studebaker “Drivers” Club and I am a member. We are pleased that you would consider bidding on our item and it is a pleasure to offer personal service to winning bidders.
