Japanese Built 2004 Toyota Highlander - High Millage but I'll miss this car!- This 2004 Highlander is in great, gently-used condition with cold a/c, strong engine, never in shop for a breakdown. This vehicle has been serviced regularly and I've only used high grade synthetic oil. This Highlander is by far my favorite car I've ever purchased. I bought it used in MN in 2004 with 23,000 miles on it. Shortly there after my wife and I mover to Las Vegas Nevada and we've since driven back to MN (Family) twice a year since 2005. With side trips to my family in IND each trip was almost 5,000 miles. Believe it or not, this car has approx. 70,000 highway miles over what would be 24 weeks of driving. The car has never been in the shop for a major repair. It has had regular maintenance, and when the vehicle hit 100,000 I had a Toyota Dealer back in MN do what turned out be a $1,800 100,000 mile tune up. Water pump, belts, flush this, replace that, and what ever else they said they did. The car does have some issues now and here are every single one: On a trip back from MN two years ago going over the Rockies, a check in light came on, along with a check tires light. It was late, dealers were closed, the car did not seem to have lost any power so I slowly kept going. When I got back to Vegas I took it a mechanic who ran check. The computer said it was something to do with a cam shaft switch, sensor or something. I asked him how much and it was $1000 or more and he was not sure even what he was looking for. I then took it to a Toyoda dealer, same thing, a cam shaft sensor something. The mechanic said, "Have you noticed a power loss, or anything different about the engine"? I said no, he said well lets just wait and see. That was two years and almost 40,000 miles ago. Lights still on, car runs great.Also, same trip, sound came on from a bearing on the right front. Never had it checked, nothing has happen, no problems for two years and 40,000 miles. Here is the main problem with the check engine light. In Nevada you have to pass a smog inspection for your tags, they won't pass this car with those lights on, no problem with the emissions, but no deal with the engine lights. So to get tags, I have to leave my car with a mechanic over night, he turns the light off just before the inspection, he does something and I pass. Pain in the ass, but better than the $1000 or so to fix a cam shaft sensor light. High mileage, too much for me to keep going back and for to the Midwest.Back right fender had a meeting with a pole. Had it painted and push out but you can still see it a little. (See back right fender picture). Scratches, small dents, especially on the from all those highway miles (truck rocks) (See front grill picture) Bottom Line: Like I said this as been by far my favorite car, but it has to many miles on it to trust going back and for to the Midwest. I believe this car has thousands of more miles, there are lots of reports of this model going 250,000 miles and beyond BUT, I certainly can't assure that. In my opinion, this SUV would be great for a family car for town driving. If you have a mechanic in the family and get those pesky lights off, that would be perfect.
