I am an Ivy League graduate. I am in my mid-30s. I am a serious fellow, and I've been on the national and local TV news giving unpaid and unsolicited financial market commentary; also been in major national newspapers and magazines doing the same. Most recently, I was quoted in AARP magazine. There is nothing being hidden about this car, as so many people do. You don't get 100% positive feedback over 11 years of registration by hiding things. If there is something you should know about the car of which I am aware, it's available to you in the auction. I go out of my way by shooting photos not just of every imaginable angle, but also in multiple lighting conditions and I did a long video to show as many details as possible -- by doing this you have you don't have to rely on a seller's "interpretation" of characteristics of the car, but instead you can draw your own conclusions from what you see. I also go out of my way to make sure people are satisfied. I work hard to make sure I get specific positive feedback comments; I don't take it lightly, and it means a tremendous amount to me, though it's been a long time since I've had something on eBay (other than the truck which I put on last week). I look forward to getting to know you if you'd like me to (or if you'd like to buy the car without me getting to know you, that's OK too!)!Use the combination of the photos, videos and text for full disclosure, with more emphasis on the photos and video as the description is clearly not intended to be exhaustive. As eBay says, a single picture is worth a thousand words. eBay strongly recommends the best practice of providing as many photos as possible and letting the photos do the talking, rather than trying to describe in words what can be seen in a photo or trying to recreate in words what already is in provided photos. I have been registered on eBay for 11 years and have 100% positive feedback. Any questions, message me through the eBay messaging system, and I will answer promptly, or you can call me at (Five-Six-One) Three-76-Two-Two-Seven-Nine. I write the telephone number like that to avoid getting computer-generated marketing calls. AUCTION RULES: Full payment is due within within 7 calendar days of auction ending by either cash in-person or bank wire only. (Once you receive a fraudulent cashier's check from a buyer, you'll never accept another one either!) Pickup is also due within 14 calendar days, and may not occur until funds have cleared. Storage for the first 14 days is FREE. There is a storage charge of $350/week beyond 14 days, and is limited to 2 extra weeks (for a total of 4 weeks of storage). You must read the entire auction description, follow the rules, and study each picture and video fully. Someone asked me whether I offer a warranty. I do not offer any kind of a warranty on anything that I sell, ever, as a matter of personal philosophy -- this 560SL is As Is with no warranty. You get the 560SL as pictured, captured in the video, and described, a clean a clear Florida title, the service records and their binder, the original books and their binder, and 1 key. It's important that you use all photographs and the video because I will not be covering in words what is already available in those. The following slideshow automatically displays only the first 100 of the approximately 200 available pictures. To view the remainder of them, and to be able to zoom in, etc., right-click near the bottom of slideshow window where it says "View all" and select "Open in new window" or "Open in new tab." That will keep this auction page open while you are viewing the pictures in a separate web browser window or tab: My video isn't finished uploading yet (it will take many hours), so please check back later for an auction revision...add this 560SL to your eBay Watch List and then check back in a day or so and I'll have the video posted. On Jun-03-11 at 23:23:15 PDT, seller added the following information: The car has a newish replaced hoodpad. That is the foam pad that is mounted underneath the hood to protect the hood paint from heat and also acts as a sound dampener. Often people don't replace the hood pad when they invetiably crumble after a number of years, which is a pity.On Jun-04-11 at 02:14:04 PDT, seller added the following information: You may already know that beyond the general appearance of a 560SL's condition and how well it drives, there are four attributes that, while important for any car purchase, are especially critical for 560SLs. They are: 1) lack of rust, 2) lack of accidents, 3) maintenance performed, and, finally, 4) mileage. Lack of rust, or rust repair, are easy to spot, and accidents are pretty well reported by Car fax / Auto check vehicle history reports. But, what about maintenance and mileage? Many people rely on "partial" maintenance records combined with assertions of the selling owner. The problem with that is that sellers are biased to have you believe the scenario is rosier than the reality may be so they be less than fully honest. With respect to the odometer, many people rely on what the mechanical odometer reads combined with with what Auto Check reports. But, that's insufficient when it comes to SL's because the odometers commonly stop working! They have tiny plastic gears that crumble in time. Even if it's currently working, kits are sold online to repair SL speedometers and odometers and, without service records that effectively make a timestamp and odometer stamp, there is no way to verify it hadn't stopped for a long time before being repair. I would rather buy a car with a stopped odometer and complete service history supported by receipts from actual service centers that are verifiable by calling them, that don't show a 7 year gap in mileage and service than a supposedly "low mileage" car with very little or no records. The worst scenario is to buy what is supposed to be a very low mileage car, let's say "62,000 miles" with "records included" but the records last show a service with 61,000 miles 7 years ago -- maybe the seller threw out the last records and fixed an odometer that has been broken for 7 years! You'd never know. The 1987 560SL up for auction here is a great scenario, and I'll demonstrate why. Although the odometer stopped working about 1,000 miles ago, the maintenance receipts are very continuous from the time the car was born in Germany until very recently, especially when you see the frequency of mileage increases which are consistently slow. They strongly support the 105,010 miles indicated in the description grid above. And that's what you want: Evidence. Evidence. Evidence. Let me give you a glimpse into the documented service history of this car and you'll understand more clearly: 1) Car Purchased at Mercedes Dealership, Sarasota, FL, Dec-1986 2) Maintenance Book Stamped by Mercedes Dealership, Tampa, FL, Feb-1987 at 2,048 miles 3) Maintenance Book Stamped by Mercedes Dealership, Tampa, FL, Oct-1988 at 7,788 miles 4) Maintenance Book Stamped by Independent Mercedes Shop, German Cars of Sarasota (GCAS), (813) 955 1972, Sarasota, FL, May-1993 at 15,863 miles 5) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Nov-1993 at 17,707 miles 6) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, May-1994 at 20,541 miles 7) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Oct-1994 at 24,455 miles 8) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, May-1995 at 27,945 miles 9) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Nov-1995 at 30,516 miles 10) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Jun-1996 at 34,229 miles 11) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Nov-1996 at 37,770 miles 12) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Jun-1997 at 42,130 miles 13) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Jan-1998 at 45,324 miles 14) Maintenance Book Stamped by GCAS, Jul-1998 at 50,665 miles 15) Maintenance Book Stamped by Independent Mercedes Shop, Bill Ussery Motors Inc, (305) 445-2515, Coral Gables, FL, Mar-1999 at 55,874 miles 16) Maintenance Book Stamped by Independent Mercedes Shop, The European Connection, (305) 448-2980, Miami, FL, Feb-2001 at 75,000 mile book mark 17) Service Receipt from Bill Ussery Motors Inc, Jan-2006 at 85,952 miles 18) Maintenance Book Stamped by Bird & Douglas Shell, (305) 448-2493, Miami, FL, May-2006 at 88,102 miles 19) Service Receipt from Stoney’s Garage, (305) 666-9172, South Miami, FL, Jun-2007 at 93,712 miles 20) Service Receipt from Independent Mercedes Shop, Strictly Mercedes, Inc, Miami, FL, (305) 665-0105, Dec-2008 at 100,130 miles 21) Service Receipt from Independent Mercedes Shop, Strictly Mercedes, Inc, Miami, FL, (305) 665-0105, Aug-2009 at 102,000 milesDo you see how slowly and consistently the miles increase? And today the car's odometers reads 104,010 in 2011, although it actually has 1,000 miles or so more than that. The kits to fix the odometer are between $25 and $65 online and you can do the gear replacements yourself. Otherwise, you can pay a speedometer-odometer repair shop few hundred dollars to fix it and. They fix 560SL odometers which have stopped all day long...beware as you shop for other 560SLs without service receipt-documented mileage! On Jun-04-11 at 21:02:26 PDT, seller added the following information: I've created the following 17+ minute video to demonstrate the 560SL. It's important to watch the entire movie because it has important information in it germane to the auction. On Jun-07-11 at 23:05:41 PDT, seller added the following information: Please let it be known that I normally write with precise grammar, but I wrote the listing description very quickly, and I type very fast so there are some odd typos in my grammar above, such as, "...than the reality may be so they be less than fully honest." That should have read, "...so they may be less than fully honest." I am quite sure I wrote a word then deleted a few as I wrote the sentence which resulted in the slip of my eye to catch that odd typo of the word "be," but rest assured I don't speak or write with the word "be" alone in that instance. Same goes for "...no way to verify it hadn't stopped for a long time before being repair." That should have been the word "repaired" at the end. On Jun-11-11 at 10:55:55 PDT, seller added the following information: I wanted to note that the original leather-wrapped steering wheel you see is in excellent original condition...it could use leather-dye, hyde-food, or even black shoe polish to give it a consistent black all around, which I never did. Those naked leather spots you see on it are not big gouges. They are just from rings on fingers scuffing the leather, like what happens to a leather pair of shoes that you scuff as you use them. Usually 560SL steering wheels are severely sunbeaten and weatherworn, and this one is simply not.
