Vehicle Detail

Hello Volkswagen enthusiests, today we are listing a Volkswagen Thing for a friend. My friend purchased this "Thing" last year on ebay and has decided to pass it along to someone else because he just does not have the time to restore it. I know he cleaned the fuel tank and got it started last summer, he did not drive it far, just back and forth in the driveway and it seemed to go into gear correctly. We really don't know a whole lot about this unit, however I do have the description from last year from the ebay auction he purchased it from. I will quote it below. "A once and a life time find!!! A 1974 Volkswagen 181 Kurierwagen!! It was an Ambulance in the Military, still has the dash panel with all the switches! Military markings on the side and all! Bid on this Today!! It does run and drive! The floor boards need patched and cleaned a lot it sat in a military base storage for a very very long time! Would make a great project for someone! The 181 has become something of a cult classic, due in no small measure to its angular styling , which leave no question as to its strictly utilitarian purpose. The doors and windows are removable without tools, and the windshield folds down, similar to a jeep. The interior is a perfect illustration of form following function, and its painted steel door panel and split, flat bench seats look appropriately post-modern, industrial chic today. The Thing was also the basis for the Roamer vehicle(with the customized bodywork of a Brubaker Box) on the CBS Saturday morning live acion television series ARK II. In 2007 Matchbox released a Type 181 in yellow, while in 2009 Hot Wheels released a "Hot" model of in tan with a black top. On "The Simpsons" series Patty and Selma drive a Thing. In the song "God Drives a Volkswagen Thing" by the Asylum Street Spankers, Jehovah drives a Thing when he "wants to cruise around without gettin' reconginzed." The song was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition on February 7, 2010. Current prices in the United States range from $3000 for restorable units to upwards of $15,000 for nicely restored examples. Barret-Jackson sold a restored Thing for over US $40,000. Highest prices are paid for unrestored low miles examples of course. In recent years several civil defense and firebrigade Things from Germany were sold on ebay for US$25,000 to US$35,000." End quotes, Since we cannot truly verify whether this is a Military Ambulance please check over all the pictures carefully, knowing that this unit will need lots of work to get it into useable condition. This unit has a clear title, it was dated back in 2010 when our friend purchased it, he has not titled it in his name. This unit is being sold as is with no warrantees or guarantees given or implied. This unit is also for sale locally and we reserve the right to end the auction due to local sale, so please dont wait till its to late to bid!! Please let us know if you have any question on this unit and we will do our best to answer them. On Apr-04-11 at 08:53:42 PDT, seller added the following information:Just to clarify this unit is NOT ready to drive down the road. It will need to be trailered or towed home. It has dual new battery cables, with 2 used batteries. Not shown in pictures. Again to clarify, this may or may not start when you come to pick it up. Just want to be honest. Its been sitting since last summer in the garage. On Apr-04-11 at 08:56:46 PDT, seller added the following information: Also there is a Military style First Aid Kit with vintage supplies still inside. It is attached to Roll Bar. May or may not be shown in pics. On Apr-07-11 at 21:10:14 PDT, seller added the following information:We have the THING running as of 4-7-11 please check you tube under tag Joesnowmobiles there are 2 videos of it running. If you cannot find it letr know and I'll email the links to you.
