Vehicle Detail
1963 HONDA CL72 250 SCRAMBLERVery Original Runner The Honda 250 Scrambler and the related CB72 were the top of the line Hondas when introduced in 1962. To prove their reliability to a public relatively unfamiliar with Japanese bikes in the US, Dave Ekins (brother of Bud Ekins) and Honda dealer Bill Robertson Jr. made the famous trip down the Baja, Mexico Peninsula to La Paz on a pair of CL72 Hondas in less than 40 hours. The successful demonstration helped Honda sell literally TONS of bikes in an era when British iron was ruling the roost. This 250 Scrambler has covered just over 8000 miles since new. It still wears its original Dunlop Universal tires front and back. (They are cracked and need to be replaced before any amount of riding.) The bike is a rare early example, and has all of the features that make these 250s much more desirable (and more expensive) than the later CL77 305cc Scrambler. It has polished aluminum 8 bolt fenders, the slotted/fluted chain guard, the small front brake, external seat strap buckle and the straight pipes with no external mufflers. The famous exhaust note of these bikes is literally music to the ears, and getting on the throttle hard is a necessary and often thing for any owner. This bike runs well and does not smoke or leak at all. I have not put a lot of miles on it so it may need additional minor sorting after the new owner installs new tires. The cables are nice and smooth, clutch and gearbox very tight, and everything on the bike works with the exception of the original Stanley D3 headlight. I tested the bulb and it needs to be replaced. Every piece of wiring on the bike is original and in excellent shape. The bike starts instantly on the first kick. The original air cleaners are present but not installed. The original rubber air tubes are there, with the correct spring clamps. The paint is completely original and as can be seen in the photos has lots of chips and paint loss, giving the bike a really cool patina. Most of the chrome is actually very good. The headlight ring, exhaust, and handlebars show some minor pitting but shine nicely. The correct shouldered rim wheels have each got areas where water collected and sat, and the chrome is flaking off. The rims are solid and the rust/chrome loss is only cosmetic-80% of the rims look very good. The rear mount of the chain guard has a split in it but it stays put while riding. The seat has been recovered in a super heavy duty vinyl, and the trim around the edge is missing. A new battery has been installed and the carbs have recently been rebuilt. This bike is sold with a clear California title (old pink slip). It has not been registered since 1980 and is out of the system so there are no back fees for a California buyer. This is a rare opportunity to obtain an extremely desirable bike in original condition. There is a reasonable reserve on this auction. These don't come up for sale like this very often, so jump on this opportunity. Please ask any and all questions and read the terms below before bidding.
