Vehicle Detail
1953 GILERA 150 SPORT Unrestored, Completely Original Gilera is one of the oldest Italian motorcycle companies, founded in 1909. The 150 four stroke single was one of their most popular street and touring models, and was also raced with great success over the years. The model here is a 1953 Sport with the 4 speed transmission and telescopic shocks. This is the first series of the Sport with the awesome fishtail muffler and front mounted horn. Extremely popular in Italy throughout the 1950s, these are rare in the US. They have a great reputation as a very good quality, reliable sporting bike. I purchased this bike with the intent to restore it. Once I got it home and cleaned it up I realized it would be a shame to lose the original patina, so I decided to leave it as is. The bike wears its original paint on the entire bike except for the muffler which has been resprayed with proper heat resistant paint. There are chips and checkering on the tank and a small dent, put the paint still shines. The frame has several areas of paint loss and chips, many of which have been touched up. The frame paint is still very shiny. The seat is in the original covering which has come off in sections, adding to the cool patina. Most of the chrome is nice and shiny with some slight freckling. The exceptions are the seat springs which show a little surface rust and the handlebars that have a bit of chrome loss. The build quality of these bikes is amazing. The fit/finish shows great pride in manufacturing. Aluminum Oldani rims are standard. Nicely finished chrome nuts are used throughout. Almost every component is signed-Aprilia, Zenith, CEV, etc., and even the handlebar grip ends advertise "GILERA". The kick starter is solid aluminum-a work of art. This bike starts with one or two kicks and runs beautifully. The four stroke note from the fishtail resonator belies its 150cc capacity-it sounds like a much bigger bike. The carb and original petcocks are rebuilt and new fuel lines installed. EVERYTHING works on the bike, including high/low beams, parking mode, and the horn. There is zero smoke and no leaks. The transmission and clutch are nice and smooth. The tires are older Pirellis with a decent amount of tread, but should be replaced before riding any significant distance. The brakes are adequate but not perfect, and may "seat in" and improve with more use. As you can see in the photos, this is a matching numbers bike. I do not have an original key, but the key that comes with the motorcycle works. A clear California title in my name will be supplied. It is in process and will come in 2 weeks. Payment is due in full within 3 days of auction end. This motorcycle is not advertised anywhere else-this auction is the exclusive opportunity to buy it.
