800x600 1978 HONDA CB550K – ALL ORIGINAL SURVIVOR! 9,947 ORIGINAL MILES, FRAME #CB550K2115688, ENGINE #CB550E2115726 Manufactured 11/77 This Honda CB550K epitomizes one the late 1970’s Honda sportbike/cruisers that became a permanent part of Honda lore and still represents the classic style… The condition of this machine is highly original and un-restored. It has 9,947 original miles from new. The frame and engine numbers are factory correct and original. It is the 550 cc engine. The gearbox is also original to the machine. This Honda 550 is completely original and has never been apart. It is completely unrestored and has a fantastic original patina, and is the perfect machine to either leave as is and enjoy or complete a full restoration, as all of the important pieces and parts and there and in good condition. This machine has been in my collection for some time, is started on a regular basis, and is ridden occasionally. When I purchased the bike, it had been sitting for some time in completely original condition. I went through the machine top to bottom and checked all of the major engine, transmission, and braking components for functionality and safety. The gas tank was still very nice even for the age, the carburetors were inspected, cleaned, and re-installed, the air filter replaced, all fluids changed, and both front and rear brakes taken apart, cleaned, re-built, and re-installed, the consequence of the bike sitting idle for a long period of time. A brand new battery was also recently installed. The tires on the front and back are the correct style and size for the 550, and are in very nice condition. There is no cracking or dry rot evident, and they are soft and pliable. The wheels are also the original D.I.D. rims, and and are in good original condition. The seat is original and the upholstery is in perfect condition with no rips, tears, or wear of any kind. The exhaust pipes are in very nice condition, with no rust or rot evident. As everyone knows, the pipes were the first part of the bike to be replaced and the hardest to find once they were gone. These pipes still have the Honda logos and part numbers stamped on the top of all of them. The engine and transmission are in excellent interior condition due to the low mileage and absence of any type of harsh conditions or abuse throughout its life. A complete cleaning and detailing was performed, and although detailing on an original machine is never completed, the overall condition of the finishes is remarkable considering the age of the machine, and is in line with the low original mileage. The aluminum parts are in fair condition overall, but due to the originality, I did not want to go too far polishing any parts. The paint is the original black and is in fair condition, with some scratches and nicks to the paint as you can see in the photos. The original badges are still applied to the gas tank and sidecovers. All of the plastic covers, etc. are in good condition and are not in need of any type of repair. The 550 on the road is very easy to handle, and rides down the road very tight, with no shakes, shimmies, or rattles. It shifts and accelerates smoothly and holds the road as it should. This bike is really interesting to ride and a lot faster than you think. There is absolutely NOTHING that needs to be done to this machine to ride it occasionally and enjoy it as a showpiece. Unlike a lot of collector motorcycles for sale on the internet, this 550 is ready to ride and not in need of any expensive service once you get it home. It is a development of the earlier CB500, and like its predecessor, the original CB550K had 4 exhaust pipes and 4 silencers. The CB550K went through some minor iterations, the last being the CB550K4. Shortly after the CB550K was introduced, a second version of the CB550 was offered, the CB550F "Super Sport". The "K" and "F" versions were sold alongside each other. Mechanically, the "K" and "F" versions were similar, sharing the same engine, tank, seat, instruments, lights, wheels, brakes and frame. The main differences were that the "F" had a lighter 4-into-I exhaust/silencer kit, fewer chrome trimmings, different sidepanels and slightly flatter handlebars. Whereas the 'K" was in the styling tradition of the 1969 Honda CB750, slotting into the Honda range as its junior companion, the "F" formed part of the Honda Super Sport range, the CB400F, CB550F and CB750F. The "F" (aka "F1") was succeeded by the "F2", which had an additional flash on the fuel tank and its fork gaiters removed. Both F & K models had a drum rear brake and a single front disc brake, although each fork slider had a bracket for a brake caliper. The CB550 was based closely on the earlier wet sump CB500, and was the largest factory boring of this SOHC air-cooled cylinder block. Having a few visual similarities to the dry sump CB750, the CB550 was much smaller and lighter. The 50 bhp (37 kW) @ 8,500 rpm CB550 was replaced in 1979 by the Honda CB650 which was broadly similar but significantly more powerful, producing 63 bhp (47 kW) @ 9,000 rpm. Reference: John Barach.
