Vehicle Detail
Here's a 1940 to 1946 Chevy or GMC pickup bed only, complete with fenders, tailgate, and new wood! Metal is in quite good original condition, for 70 years old, since it spent it's life in the California rural desert, it is rust-free. Lower corners of fenders are very sound, unrusted, original and sturdy. The passenger fender is a very good untouched original. The drivers side had a slight tear from the brace above the wheel opening that I have welded and repaired, see the photo. The original bed wood was dry rotted, so I replaced it all with new hardwood. I varnished the wood on all sides prior to reassembly with a modern UV-inhibitive polyurethane light oak stain/finish. All new cad-plated carridge bolts. The bed strips are original, they just needed to be lightly blasted and painted black before re-assembly. If you wanted to have a nice repaint, you would need to sand thru the old dry paint and do a certain amount of work to make these fenders smooth, they are in great shape for their age, but far from perfect. The bed sides are very good, as is the front. The front stake pockets are quite good, the rear two stake pockets have a some damage, I would replace them for a show bed, reproduction replacement stake pockets are only $40 each. Or, just use the bed as-is! It has a cool patina, from being painted originally an army green, to being repainted red and then light blue. All these layers of paint have protected the thick metal! And now, various colors show thru like some far-out easter egg project! I was told that since it was a WW2 era military truck, and the original paint is army green, the tail gate does not have either the GMC or Chevy script, it is just plain. Note: This bed is common for trucks 1940-1946. The 1938-1939 beds were 2 5/8" narrower than this one - other wise, they look almost the same, with some subtle differences. If you have any questions, please call me. I can possibly deliver this to you if you are in California between LA and San Diego, or even as far east as Las Vegas, Nevada. Note: Since this can be loaded on a Car Transporter between cars standing up, it should be possible to get a very reasonable price for California to Mid-west destinations. Inquire for more info.
