Vehicle Detail
1958 Mercedes Benz 220S Ponton Sedan Nice Rust Free Runner/Driver The Mercedes Benz "Ponton" series of the 1950's exude quality. Their classic styling, excellent road manners, German engineering, and unsurpassed quality all add up to one extremely desirable vintage car today. The example for auction here is a 1958 production 220S 4 door sedan with a 4 spd manual transmission. It is an extremely solid, rust free car that runs and drives well. It could be enjoyed as is or it could be restored cosmetically. Still in it's original color combination of grey with red interior, it is a stunning contrast to the common modern blase´ colors.... The 220S interior was adorned in beautiful wood everywhere with gorgeous chrome knobs and switches. The seat upholstery is in cloth and is not original. The mileage shows 71,313 but it is unknown if it's original. The car is tight and drives nicely. The body is nice and straight, with no accident damage. Areas of the paint are blotchy as can be seen here. The California license plate (rear only) from 1958 is included. I do not know the entire history of the car, although from the looks of the underside it obviously spent it's life in the Southwest USA, away from the rust belt. The prominent Mercedes grill and hood ornament do the 220S proud. The engine starts eagerly and doesn't smoke. It runs well and goes through the gears smoothly. A new clutch and brake hydraulics where recently done. The engine compartment is fairly clean and very original. Here are the numbers on the car. All the original tags are in place....... The following photos will demonstrate the structural integrity of the Mercedes. Here is the right front underside. The right rear underside. This is the left rear underside This is the left front underside. Under the trunk floor from the left........ ...and from the right. The trunk still has the original mat, lug wrench and jack. Some of the chrome is very nice, but not perfect. Here is the hood ornament and very nice grill surround with no dents. The chrome on the bumpers is not as nice as the rest. Both front and rear have some dings and pits in both sections. (The grill shell on the right top may appear to be rippled here, it is not-it's a reflection in the photo....) This car has the ultra cool Lucas version of the driving lights. They are in very nice shape. The door gaps are perfect and the car exhibits the Mercedes characteristic "vault-like" closing sound when shutting the doors. The right side shows the same razor sharp lines. Here are some more nice angles of this beautiful Mercedes: All of the interior chrome is excellent. Paint in the door jambs is all original. Super cool original Blaupunkt radio. The original headliner and working dome light. The wood is very good in the entire interior. There is a spot near the glove box which may need repair. As you know, finding any 1950's Mercedes with the structural integrity of this car is very rare. Add to that the fact that it's a nice running driving Ponton and it's a no brainer to buy. The reserve is super reasonable. This is how you like to buy them- easy to enjoy now, easy to make better....Prices are climbing and these don't come up for sale very often, so be smart and jump on it!
