Best of Show Automotive, LLC 7700 Tyler Boulevard Mentor Museum of Speed, Mentor, OH, 44060, US Phone : 440-350-1480 Email : joseph.carroll@bestofshowautomotive.com Tire Scorching 1971 Plymouth Duster 340 H Code! Love Mopars but can't afford a 'Cuda, Charger, Challenger or one of the other heavy-hitters from Chrysler? Here's the next best thing. This 1971 Duster is a real H-code 340 car in great condition with a strong running small block under the hood, all for a bargain price. They're easy work on, parts are plentiful, and there's a strong network of fans out there who will happily embrace you whenever you show up in this black wolf in sheep's clothing. OK, it's not ready for concours duty, but look at the price?if you're the kind of guy who likes to drive them instead of show them, then this is definitely your car. All the mechanical bits have been dialed in and it runs incredibly well, looks awfully darned good, and you'll have plenty of cash left over to cruise this summer. Even Dusters like this one have pedigrees, and this one has a pretty good showing of options on the fender tag: E55340-4 Barrel D32H-D A-727 TorqueFlite Trans VS29 V = Plymouth Valiant / Duster S = Special 29 = 2 Door Sports Hardtop H1B H = 340 275HP 1-4BBL 8 CYL 1 = 1971 B = Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, USA 408489Sequence Number '408489' GY3Paint Code: Citra Yella L4X9 Trim Grade/Style/Color L = Low 4 = Vinyl Split Bench w/ Center Armrest X9 = Black TX9Upper Door Frame: Black / Black Velvet 526Date Built: 5 / 26 / 1971 250028Order Number: 250028 V1XRoof Type OR Color: Full Vinyl Top - Black UBuilt to Specifications for USA Order B51Power Assisted Brakes G11Tinted Glass All G33Left Hand Outside Mirror - Manual / Chrome M21Roof Drip Rail Moldings N41Dual Exhaust w/o Tips N42Chrome Dual Exhaust Tips N85Tachometer N95Nox Exhaust Emission Control R11Music Master Radio AM V6XBlack Longitude Sports Stripe V8XTransverse Stripe - Black EN2End of Codes Assembly Line 2 Originally a Citra Yella car with black stripes, this cool Duster is now a deep, sinister black with white stripes, which I'm sure you're liking a lot more?I sure do. The paint job is very thorough, and you have to look pretty hard to find any traces of the original yellow paint. That suggests to me that this car was disassembled prior to paint, which is the only way to do it right. And to get a black car to look good, you can't go halfway on the bodywork, and this southern car is amazingly straight and solid. All the body panels are original and clean, with decent alignment and gaps throughout. The urethane paint was applied a few years ago and still has a good shine to it today. If you really want to take this Duster to the next level, a professional cut and buff would make it really pop, but even as it sits today, it's a great-looking show and go piece. The chrome is mostly original on this car, including the mirror and door handles. The bumpers have been re-chromed or replaced, and look excellent. The 340 decals and stripes, as well as the Duster logo out back, are accurate reproduction items that have been professionally installed for a factory look. The front grille is original, as is all the stainless trim. The glass looks good and doesn't show any big nicks or scratches, even the windshield. Under the hood is a smart-running 340 cubic inch small block V8, as original. Rated by the factory at 275 horsepower, this one is probably making quite a few more and really wants to run. At first glance, you'll notice all the chrome dress-up pieces, including the Edelbrock air filter and valve covers. The engine also sports a coat of Hemi Orange paint for authenticity's sake. An Edelbrock RPM intake manifold supports an Edelbrock 600 CFM 4-barrel carburetor with electric choke, while a lightweight hi-torque starter cranks it to life. There are billet pulleys on the front of the engine driving the water pump and alternator. Discreetly tucked down low, you'll find the power steering pump, which was apparently added when the car was restored, and Best of Show just installed a new Group 24 yellow cap battery for authenticity's sake. A set of long-tube headers handle exhaust chores and give this black Duster an aggressive snarl that barks out of a set of Flowmaster mufflers. As I mentioned, it's nice, with plenty of room to grow and upgrade if that's what you're into, but as-is, this is a great-running engine that will probably surprise a lot of people on the street. After taking it for a test drive yesterday with the new wheels and tires installed, our head mechanic came back with a big grin on his face saying, "Wow, that little car really moves!" The transmission is a column-shifted TorqueFlite automatic that will chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift (so I'm guessing it's been rebuilt with a shift kit at the very least). The front disc/rear drum brakes are power assisted and work properly. The exhaust system is new and sounds incredible. The floors appear to be all original sheet metal that has been undercoated for durability and sound control, but not to hide any problems that we can find. It's a solid car throughout. Rolling stock was just upgraded by Best of Show to those great-looking charcoal gray Torq-Thrust wheels it's currently wearing plus a fresh set of BFGoodrich radials all around. The interior is the same all-business L4X9 black interior that came with the car in 1971, complete right down to the original seat belts hanging overhead. It's much too nice to be original, but I can't say when the work was done?probably not long ago. The bench seat has a new cover that looks outstanding, the dash pad is unblemished, and the black carpets have been well-protected by a set of floor mats. The gauges have been rebuilt and updated with cool silver faces. A small aftermarket tach is nestled into the nook between the A-pillar and the dash pad, while everything else is stock. The AM radio is still the original Music Master unit from 1971. No frills, nothing outrageously custom, just an honest, clean interior that is perfectly in character with the rest of the car. Documentation includes an original Owner's Manual and a stack of receipts for much of the upgrades. At Best of Show, we understand that not everyone has a six-figure pile of money to spend on a hobby car, and we've recently dedicated our considerable resources to locating clean, high-quality, affordable collector cars that will appeal to a wider audience. This is one of those cars. There are no stories behind this one, and it needs no excuses. It isn't an investment car, and it isn't concours quality?that's not a sin. However, it is a clean, well-built, fast, fun cruiser that will deliver a ton of bang for the buck for the next lucky owner. You can take it to any show and be welcomed, and I'll wager that you'll have more fun behind the wheel of this Duster than the guy who just dropped $250K on his new Hemi Charger does behind the wheel of the truck he uses to tow it to shows. Drive 'em and enjoy 'em is my motto, and for the money, there's really nothing better to do with this great Duster. Call today!
