Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1966 Studebaker Commander 4 door Sedan. This was the last year Studes were produced and like all the Studes made in 65 and 66 it was made in Canada. Not many were made that last year, and they are kind of rare. Has a 230 cu in straight six engine made by McKinnon Corp in Canada, under a licnese from Chevrolet (it is almost exactly a Chevy 230 six engine). Has a Borg Warner Flight-O-Matic automatic transmission. Studebaker called this color: "Niagra Blue Mist". No power steering or power brakes. No air conditioning. No factory radio and dash was never cut for an aftermarket radio. This 66 model had the new "safety" padded dash, and the climate control, flow through air refresher system, where outside air came in from under the dash, exited the cabin through slots in the package tray behind the top of the rear seat, and then exited by going through the trunk and them out through the finned vents on top of the cool looking tail lights. I acquired it in 1996 when it had 37,655 miles on it, having been stored in a dry garage since the early 70s. It now has approx 61K miles on it (the speedometer cable broke a couple of years ago). Mostly it was driven infrequently with Antique auto plates on it. It was stored for about 5 years then went back on the road. It has not been driven in over a year. Never hit with no frame damage. Had new front shocks, kingpins, and suspension bushings installed a few years ago. Glass is good. Now it has some dents, rust in the floors and rear fenders and quarters, and surface rust on the hood and trunk lid (that is not as bad as it looks...they are still solid). Needs a battery and fresh gas and you should be able to drive it. Brakes may be soft from sitting. Interior is OK, but with hole in drivers front seat. Exhuast system probably has rust leaks by now (rear pipe was replaced 2 years ago, and whole new systems (even on in stainless) are readily available. The guys on the internet Studebaker discussion boards are a GREAT help in finding any parts and in explaining how to fix anything. The big yellow color Studebaker shop manual is included (with xeroxe'd copies of the 65-65 updates). These are easy to work on cars. I think there are only maybe 4 or 5 wires that go onto the engine. No computers on these cars. A carburetor, a starter, a water pump, an alternator, and a fuel pump are pretty much all you have to look after. And the water pump, fuel pump, starter and alternator were all replaced in the last few years. Engine ran fine and burned no oil. It never overheated. These cars also came with 283 Chevy V8 engines, so a hot crate motor Small Block Chevy would slide right in. The rear ends were pretty strong in these cars, and the Stude traction lock center sections can still be found. Studebaker International recently bought out all the NOS Stude parts SASCO had been selling since the late 60s, and they have pretty much all the NOS sheet metal to fix this car, at VERY reasonable prices (and they have tons of other parts for these 66 models) Lots of things like brake shoes, water pumps, shocks, seals, electrical components, starters, master cylinders, etc, are still available from NAPA stores. Would make a great street sleeper with a hot V8 engine. These were really well built cars with a very strong frame. Please message with any questions. I have this advertised locally and may end the auction if some local person buys it. Local Pickup only, I will not deliver. $100 deposit via Paypal due after auction ends and balance due when vehicle is picked up.
