Please Have a Good Broad-Band Internet connection when viewing and be patient enough to allow all 124 detailed photos to down-load! Here is a Rarely Found, One Registered Owner with title still in his name and the Original Purchase/Sales Invoice/Receipt. One Very Nice 1970 Mercedes-Benz W108 6-Cylinder M130 Fuel-Injected Short Wheel-Base 280SE Floor-Shift 4-Door Sedan, that is believed to have had a recent "High Dollar" ($6,000-$8,000) New Leather Interior Replacement in either Gahh or M-B OEM Type Factory Brand (LEATHER Seat Covers, Head-Rests, Horse-Hair Padding/Seat-Cushions and Excellent German Square-Weave Carpeting and Padding). My Reserve Price on this car is LESS than the current cost of this Quality Leather and Wool Interior available at a Qualified Mercedes-Benz Dealership or a Restoration Shop. These 45 year old cars are commonly known for their ability to be driven daily and dependably and deliver maximun reliability, comfort, ride, handling, affordability and preformance from a Vintage 1960's and 1970's Classic Car! This is a very good example of Mercede's Glory Years that Elevated them to The Top Tier Mark for Luxuary, Status and Engineering Excellence that they still enjoy today! Although many believe that they are resting on their LAURALS from the Major Successes of their previous W108, W109, W111, W116, W123 and W126 Chassis Range Models from the late 1960's through the early 1990's ! This Auction Represents a very Tidy and well Sorted Model, Not a Show-Car, but a good daily driver, W108 Short-Wheel Base sedan. This is an appreciating Classic Car Investment that you can use/ drive today and still improve it as I did, taking it to the next level of restoration depending on your desire or goal! Up for auction is a Very Presentable Vintage 1970 Mercedes Benz W108, 280SE Sedan with the Famous M130 straight 6-Cylinder Mechanical Fuel Injected Engine. Other noteworthy factory ordered options include: Working Air Conditioning, Electric Windows, Power Locks, Automatic Floor-Shift Transmission, Becker AM/FM Stereo Radio and Leather Interior. The current and original color combination appears to be Ivory Exterior with a gorgeous Tobacco Leather Interior. This was a one owner car (I believe it originally had a Texas Title, where it was originally sold and then was re-titled in Utah on 05/20/1980 upon the owner's discharge from the military and moving back home), and it comes with it's Vintage hand written Original Texas dealership purchase order/invoice. The original owner was a lifelong military man (The Air Force I Believe) and this car allegedly followed him around the world and many of his military stickers and service awards are found on the chrome bumpers attesting and supporting this story. I acquired this Classic Benz from the dealer who took it in trade. The Title is Clean, Signed and Open as I never titled it in Indiana to keep the One-Owner Status Documents in place for the next future owner. Although this car is a super driver and an appreciating Classic, it is not 100% restored or in perfect condition. It is a 45 year old Mercedes Benz Classic that is very Tidy and Well Sorted, and presents itself very nicely, showing an original color re-spray believed to have been done in the early to mid-1990s along with a rear end fender bender in the past (some of the poor body repairs around the license plate lights and the trunk lid alignment are a bit telling/noticeable to a more critical eye), but the interior restoration craftsman did a near perfect job on the New Leather Seats and Head-Rests, Seat inner Pads, Cushions, and German Square-Weave Carpets using absolutely the Best QUALITY of either USA or German Materials and Components believed to have been done all within the past 5-10 years. This is Absolutely The VERY BEST INTERIOR in any W108, W109 or W111 that you will currently Find on eBay! Nobody Spends this kind of "Stupid Money" on one of these cars unless it's a REALLY special model like a Show 6.3 Sedan, W111/W112 Coupe or Cabriolet model! The final selling price of this will probably just cover the cost of what a High Quality Leather and Wool Interior would currently cost you if installed at a Mercedes Benz dealership today. Get a Super Deal, Buy the Interior and get the Car Free!!! This Car Starts right up, it's engine is quiet running when warmed up and has both great compression and oil pressure which makes me believe that it's 67,668 miles are original, but most likely it is 167,668 plus miles due to a broken odometer and lack of info (on 2/18/2012 mileage was stated to be 67,428 but "Not Actual" thus maybe meaning 167,428). When I first took it to Quality Import Service the Mileage was logged in at 67,660 so I believe that the Odometer must have just failed under my short ownership tenure??? As all these cars do when cold and sitting a few days or weeks, you will get a small puff of blue smoke at start-up from leaky valve guides/seals but then clears shortly after. In the two years that I have had it, I have mainly worked on sorting out a few of the mechanical issues from lack of use in the past 5-7 years prior. What I could not do myself I had my High Quality Mercedes Benz Specialty Service Center do for me at a cost over $3,000.00 (invoices included) plus over $1,250.00 wholesale in the necessary parts that I provided for these repairs. I'm a Mercedes-Benz Parts Supplier, both NOS, OEM and Aftermarket. This is an Easy Starting and Very Nice Running 280SE and the more I have driven it recently running some F.I. additives and Fresh Premium Fuel thru it, the Better it Preforms. I believe we have reversed the issues of it sitting idle for the past 5-7 years. The transmission shifts great when warmed up and the engine is quite powerful. All items work except what is noted below! It has Better than average Chrome Plating and the Paint is a little bit tired, but still looks Great from 10-15 feet. All door gaps are very good as is the front hood/bonnet, while the rear trunk lid gaps are a bit off as shown in photos! Repair Work Completed: -Adjusted all Engine Valves, Scoped and Adjusted Timing Ignition System and Fuel Injection System. -Major Tune-Up with NGK Spark Plugs, Bosch Ignition Wire Set, Points, Condenser, Distributor Cap and Distributor Rotor. New bushings and springs installed in the ignition distributor. -Replaced one Front Motor Mount. -Recently installed set of four(4) New KYB "Gas-Adjust" Shock Absorbers. -Recent Fuel, Air, Oil, Steering, Axle and Transmission Fluid, Oil and Filter Change. -Fuel Injection Pump and Fuel Mixture adjusted and fine tuned for better warm weather and cold weather driving. -New L/H Front Window Regulator and all other Regulators, Switches and Motors Cleaned and Lubricated. The Electric Window Switches were Disassembled, Cleaned, Lubricated and Re-Installed. -Air-Conditioning major service included a good used Compressor, Hoses, Evaporator along with a New Receiver-Drier, Belts, AC Blower Motor Repair, Updated to 134A changeover fittings and oil and Re-Charged with Fresh Freon. There is still a small leak and we top it up ever spring. -The Shop Replaced all 4 Heater/Defrost/Ventilation Levers with a New Factory up-date set of Four Levers!$! -Brand New ATE Brake Master Cylinder and Remanufactured Vacuum Brake Booster installed and all Calipers flushed and Bled with New ATE/Mercedes-Benz Brake Fluid. Rear calipers rebuilt and all front and rear hoses also previously replaced. -A perfectly good used Low Mileage and Low Aged West German "Behr" Fan Clutch Assembly installed rather than installing a cheaper made and priced Chinese Unit -Replaced the Radio Antenna and Removed and Repaired Original Becker Radio, Power Amp and Speakers! -Two NOS Michelin XH4 P205/70R14 Tires are on the Front Wheels and three older 3/4 tread life Firestone FR360 P205/75R14 are on the Rear Wheels and on the spare in trunk. Full Honest Disclosure: These are the Known flaws & defects, or just fleeting personality depending on temperature & mood -Has a varying/changing drive-train noise under load and/or sometimes when accelerating/shifting and my Mercedes mechanic thought that a center support bearing, tranny mount or rubber flex coupler may be the culprit, but it could also be a u-joint. Has the fairly common Mercedes-Benz clunk when first started and then shifted into reverse. -Could use a few new floor shift internal nylon bushings in linkage as R-N-D locations are slightly off or varied. -Factory Becker Radio and Radio speakers are a bit scratchy/crackly and at times the radio has static. -Heating and defrost blower motor life/power comes and goes and at this time is inoperable to sometimes only working on slow blower speed at best and will need future attention. The AC blower motor works fine, but it is a different unit and it was recently rebuilt. -The Speedometer Bearing squeals after setting for awhile and when it is really cold out. Also the Speedometer glass has a very annoying rattle or vibration so I think the rubber seal/gasket has dried up and fallen out of place. -The car's fuel injection was last set-up in late summer/early fall and it is just a tiny bit cold-blooded(lean) in winter until it is fully warmed up and it then runs very good and strong! -Dash light rheostat was inoperable so we just hard wired it. (common problem on all W108/109/111/123/126 series) -Mileage Odometer is inoperable thus we are not sure of this cars exact mileage(Shows 67,668) I just put over 60 miles on it today that did not register. It is actually more realistically to be 167,668+ -L/H rear window motor is sluggish and needs a bit of help to raise it after lowering it! It Works better in Summer! -There appears to have been a few minor rust repairs in the headlamp area, front cross-member bottom, rocker edges, rear quarters (side trunk lower areas), but Nothing Structural and all Repairs appear to have been Done Well and are holding up nicely with no blisters or bubbles evident. So Caution please be aware that we are NOT advertising this 45 year old Mercedes-Benz as totally "Rust-Free"! Please study all the 124 pictures that we added! -The L/H Driver's-Side Front and Rear Door Top Vinyl/M-B Tex Door Capping Trim is cracked and broken. -Very Minor oil smoke puffs in exhaust flow at start-up after setting for a while, due to valve guide/valve seal leak down. This is very common on these vintage Mercedes-Benz model cars with the gasoline 4 and 6-cylinder engines. -After setting in the garage for a few weeks or months there are a few different oil drips that can be seen on the floor. Regular starting, driving and usage seems to keep them at a minimum or stops it altogether. Most likely a gasket or seal that has dried out from lack of use. -There are a few small almost invisible cracks in the dash, but you have to look rather hard. A few of the door panels have some missing lower clips that need to be replaced. -There are many minor little visible flaws evident in the paint (chips, cracks and scratches), in the lenses and side marker lights, there is some sun fading noticeable in their color, in the Chrome bumpers (fading, dings, nicks and scratches), in the exterior anodized aluminum trim (sun fading, misalignment of finishers, a few loose body molding clips and scratches). I have repaired the worst/loosest items, changing some of the plastic trim clips, but short of taking it all off and and redoing all the trim, I will leave that for the next major paint job. It's just a Nice 45 Year Old Car! I have tried my very best to describe this automobile as accurately as possible to both it's positive aspects along with it's negative points. I have offered over 120 pictures showing not just the Pretty and the Beautiful, but both the bad and ugly also. I risk to say that my listing has more under carriage shots than any of the other seller's care to disclose to you! I am a longtime Mercedes-Benz owner and big fan of especially their 1960-1980's model offerings and somewhat to very knowledgeable about them at least from the parts room perspective and thus I may be overly biased in my love for saving and preserving these old cars. I am a "Parts-Man" not a Mechanic and nor do not claim to be, although basic preemptive service has always been my best advice to customers over the counter and I practice it religiously on my own cars. The old saying "an once of prevention is better than a pound of cures" applies to all mechanical devices, but I find it especially true to the old West German Classics!
