1952 Packard 200 Sedan – VERY Original, Amazing Patina, Runs & Drives GREAT! I am proud to offer you this 1952 Packard 200 for sale. The 200s were produced for only two years, and are rarely seen today. This one is very original, and has been lovingly refreshed mechanically – she’s ready to cruise right now. I have detailed ownership history back into the 70s, and lots of receipts and photos of the care it has received. Please see the details below. Many more photos available. Questions and in-person inspections encouraged. Thanks for looking! The story: This car was in service during the late 70’s, piloted by a professor emeritus at the University of Texas. The car still has UT parking decals from ’78-’79, and I found the car’s plate with a 1980 registration sticker. The professor was a known collector, particularly of Packards. Unsure why the car was taken off the road, but it is presumed to have sat until his death. The previous owner bought the car in 2001 from the professor’s estate. To his telling, there were several old cars nosed in under some pine trees on an west Austin estate (that’s why the hood/top show heavier corrsosion than other parts of the car). He spent a few years going through the mechanicals, and had the car back on the road in 2004. I first saw the car around 2009 at a regional Packard event. I was surprised and thrilled when I saw it come up for sale about a year and a half ago…I had to have it! I have truly enjoyed the car, and am genuinely pained to offer it for sale…take advantage of this opportunity now, before I change my mind. Mechanicals: The head was pulled from the original 288 CID flathead, inline or ‘straight’ 8 cylinder engine. To my understanding, pistons and bores were checked and polished, then reassembled…don’t believe there was need to replace anything. There are some photos of this process. A new water pump and alternator were fitted, and the carb rebuilt. The highly-desired optional Ultramatic transmission was usable, but the overdrive wasn’t working – it was sent to a specialist for a complete rebuild in 2013…I have receipts and photos of the rebuild. While the engine was considered old-fashioned in 1952, the transmission was quite progressive…this is a fully-automatic transmission with overdrive. It works great and, coupled with the super-smooth straight 8, makes for an incredibly quiet and enjoyable cruising at highway speeds. The other typical mechanicals were all addressed – new brakes, tires, shocks, exhaust etc. There are some photos and receipts for these parts, too. Steering and brakes are fully mechanical – no power assist – but work as designed. Body: This car is truly untouched, and still wears a good deal of its original Turquoise Blue Light paint. I cannot find any evidence of any respray or body repair. Though obviously corroded, the outer body is very solid and relatively straight. The body gaps are quite good, but there is some minor damage to one quarter panel. The trunk pan is also very solid, but the cabin floor pans need help…they have several small rust holes front and back and currently have some temporary patching in place. Glass and trim: Believed to be all original – mostly complete, but certainly rough in spots. There is a small medallion missing from the grille, but believe otherwise that all trim is correct and present. Some minor dings, but mostly straight – obviously quite pitted throughout. The windshield has a sizable crack, and some serious delaminating. The driver side windows are better – no cracks, minor delaminating. The vent windows are a bit worse – both have heavy delaminating, and the rear vent has some cracks. Passenger side is about the same – big crack in the front window, and minor delamination throughout. The back glass is crack-free, but has some heavy ‘fogging’ along the bottom edge. Lots of pics available of all – please contact me for a link to a detailed online photo gallery. Interior: Again, very original (under the new blankets). The dash is uncut and in pretty good shape, as is the steering wheel and column/shifter. Great look to the gauges, radio, speaker grille, emblem etc. The upholstery is obviously very ratty, but is what came from the factory. Has factory (I think) lap belts in the front that work well. Front windows roll up and down easy. Operational: This car is easy to own/enjoy. When used regularly, it will start right up without hesitation. If left sitting for a couple months, it requires only a little priming of the carb to fire up. The car warms up quickly, and idles down nice and smooth. No smoke or knocking – plenty of power, runs cool. Car shifts easily, steers and brakes like it should. ALL lights and gauges work – everything – temp gauge, back-up lights, blinkers, speedo etc. The horn works, but is very sporadic. The radio lights up, but no sound. The wipers and odometer do not work, and I’m honestly not sure about the heater, but appears all components are there. Extras: As previously mentioned, this car has lots of documented history, all of which will come with the car – receipts, photos, old tags, etc. Also, the car comes with a detailed service manual and some nice used parts: extra set of fender skirts, a better back bumper, carpet kit, and a box of hoarded seals/gaskets/bushings etc.
