Vehicle Detail
Whether you are looking for that Late Christmas Present that you Never Got or a Great Valentine's Day Gift for either You or Your Wife, or just Getting Anxious, Ready and Yearning for an early Spring, here is the answer to your Dreams! If you ever desired to Own, Drive, Collect and/or Invest in the most attractive and desirable of the last of the "Hand-Built" 1960's Mercedes Benz Coach Built Coupes, this may be one of the Best Opportunities that You May Ever Have, as prices for these are now on the Move being dragged Higher by the $100-250K 4-Seat W111 chassis Convertibles, Multimillion Dollar W198 chassis 300SL Roadsters and Gull-Wings, the little brother and Much More diminutive W121 chassis 190SL's are regularly cracking the $100K mark while Real Good Examples of the Very Handsome and the long Under-Valued W113 chassis 230SL, 250SL and 280SL's are finally breaking the $100-150k range and some skipping right in the the $200-250K mark. Sure it may be a HUGE bubble, BUT I have thought the same regarding Porsche 356s(all models and conditions) and that they too were in a huge bubble......and that was 3-5 years ago.......and yet they continue to surge almost MONTHLY, and now look a early 911's.......for that matter all pre 993 type (911 Porsches) also moving ever high. In retrospect I believe that the Cream is rising to the Top, all the cars mentioned are very high quality and very usable even daily in their vintage form and most notably there are many new astute and wealthy European and Asian Collectors, Investors and Buyers, while the QE1,2,3,4,5.6.7....... to infinitely will eventually usher the US Dollar to fall very hard, many international investors are exchanging their dollars for real tangible assets that will hold their value at the minimum and most likely continue to appreciate! Done in the Most Attractive Color Combination of DB 190 Graphite Grey Exterior and Blood Red Full Leather Interior, ordered with the VERY RARE Sport Seat Option(Less than 2-4% Coupes and Convertibles were ordered with these). This Extremely Well Sorted and Investment Quality very early Mercedes Benz 250SE W111 Coupe was one of the first few of the new 250-series model run made replacing the 220SEc at the end of the 1965 model year. This Dry and Straight example of the Always Attractive, Timeless and Magically Paul Bracq Designed Coupe has had an "Open Checkbook" thoughtful, accurate, detailed and sympathetic restoration just completed in late Summer of 2014 after almost 6 years in restoration process. Any imported collector knows that there are not many 50 year old cars that have Great Dependability, Drive-ability, Safety, Creature Comforts(Good Defrost, Heat and A/C), Handling, Braking while Still Being "Head Turning". These Cars are the ticket to Vintage Ownership that does not have to be locked away only to be used once or twice a month in the summer, but everyday during the Spring, Summer and Autumn Seasons, they do it all and do it reliably, safely and well! In retrospect looking back, after going through the purchase decision of a very solid and attractive driver, then opting on a mild refresh and playing "Contractor" on this Exterior and Interior Restoration and Mechanical Refresh/Update, it's safe to admit now that I OVERDID my car's "refreshing", but at least I did it Right. My "Loss" is Going to Be somebodies astute purchase and a "Great Gain". My "Experienced Advice" to anyone contemplating buying on of these Gorgeous Coupes(or convertibles but they are much more dangerous and have a much higher entry level), is to stay away from in today's market what would be the $12-20K cars as they most likely are stealth basket cases not realized yet and have huge future liabilities waiting to get you(it is a lot like quick sand the more you do the deeper in potential loss you go)! Then there are some very nice, solid and usable cars in the $20-30K range if do your homework, choose well, get lucky and resist restoration of any large size or matter, but overall the best investment and purchase will be the $40-80K Original or Recently Restored Car(make sure the seller is honest and truthful) and that you can buy for a discounted price of $30-50K and get half the restoration for Free and have instant Driving Gratification, Aesthetics and Dependability. I for one after owning over 30 Mercedes in my almost 60 years, should have known better, but I was wealthier 6 years ago and made the mistake of letting my emotions get into my business decisions. This was going to be the Classic to End all Classics for me, but now I can't justify the cost and afford to keep it Interior Restoration: -New Headliner(Front and Rear Windshields Out) -Wood Dash Gage Binical, Speaker Grill and Wooden Windshield Surround Light Wood Re-Fresh/Refinish in a satin patina -Speedometer and Tachometer Sent Out to Palo-Alto California and Restored -New Old Stock(more Flexible) Gemo/Mercedes-Benz West German NOS Speedometer and Tachometer Cables -Three or Four New Gahh #203/Part#1079 Medium Red Leather Hides and the Rest of Hides were Color Coded Dyed to Match -Dash Top, Bottom, all four Door Panels Front and Rear and All Door Toppers/Caps also were Color Matched Dyed that can with the new hides to Match the New Leather Hides -New Factory OEM Type Horsehair Internal Seat Pads in the Front Seats the Rears were deemed OK. -New Old Stock Mercedes Benz Coco Multicolored Floor Mats -Factory Becker Mexico TR Radio Sent Out and Professionally Restored/Re-manufactured -New Correct Speaker Mounted in Center Dash and Optional Expensive Hi-Watt Units Mounted Undetectably Under Front Seats -Factory Analog Clock Repaired/Rebuilt -New Front Interior Lamp and Chrome Surround -Four New sets of Period Correct Color-Coded Seat-Belts with Spring Loaded Re-tractors Exterior Restoration: -Trim, Rubber, Glass Out Full Exterior Re-Paint in Mercedes DB190 Graphite Grey -New Front and Rear Bumpers and Over-Riders -New R/H and L/H Mercedes-Benz Factory Out-Side Door Mirrors -New MB Classic Center Door Felts, Front Window Guide Felt/Rubbers, Rear to Front Window Felt/Rubbers, Front to Back Top Rubber/Weatherstripping Seals, Front Windshield and Rear Window Glass New MB Rubber Seals. -New MB Classic Center Front Chrome/Stainless Windshield Surround Trim and Finisher Trim Pieces at lower corners and middle connector trim. -Rear Tail Lamps Sent Out for Restoration(Re-Chromed Perfect Frames/Surrounds and Replaced old Faded Lenses with Factory Germany made Re-productions)Installed with New M-B Classic Center Tail Lamps Mounting Seals -New Old Stock Chrome Trim Strips Installed Between Rear Tail Lamp Assemblies and Trunk Lock -Polished and Re-Installed the Four Factory Ordered, Heavy Original Equipment 300SE Wheel Well Opening Chrome Plated Brass Trim Surrounds Under-Car Repair and Restoration: -5 New Goodyear White Wall Tire, the Correct Size and W/W Type for this Year Mercedes-Benz and Model after these Photos were Taken -Total Exhaust System except header pipe, Rear Muffler, Both Axle Pipes and The Center Muffler/Pipe Assembly was Replaced after these Photos with all the Proper Hangers, Hardware and Clamps -Rear differential Boot and Seals were also replaced along with Rear Fluid/Gear Oil Service after these Photos were Taken -Matched Pair of Factory M-B Classic Center Rear Coil Springs and Rubber Mounting Pads and Perches(Replaced After Photos Were Taken) -Two Brand New(Not Rebuild) ATE Front Calipers, Pads and Hoses were Replaced After these Photos were Taken -Bend New ATE Rear Wheel Cylinders and Rear Brake Hoses were Replaced and the Brake Drums were Turned/Trued -New Fuel Tank to Dash Gauge Sending Unit Was Replaced in Trunk -Factory Recommended Transmission Service with new M-B/Mann Transmission Filter, Seal and Correct Dextron/Type A Trans. I keep remembering details that I wanted to mention such as Front and Rear Bumpers are new at a cost over $3800.00, but the back is a Euro bumper and thus it has both USA/NA and European License Plate Lamps mounted. As I mentioned already it has the later 280SE/280SL M130 6-Plunger Fuel Injected Engine replacing the M129 250SE engine. Believed to have been Dealer installed my Selling Cincinnati Mercedes Dealership in 1968 and the block was not stamped at that time. My total investment in this car is well over $42,500.00 and would be more had it not been for the fact that I am an Imported Parts Wholesaler and supplied most of it's repair parts from eith my NOS inventory or through my M-B parts importers on currently available items! Also the shop that did 95% of work was Dorman Garage Inc. In LaPorte, IN, owned by my Friend Bob who extended me a favorable restoration, paint shop and mechanical repair labor rate(That is why it was worth waiting over 5 years for it to be finished). To get this same result just 3-6 years later at now increased/normal labor rates and inflated Mercedes-Benz retail parts prices, I believe that to re-make this Car in the Same Current Condition with the same restoration work done, would cost closer to $65,000-$80,000. Such is the reality of restoration labor and parts price increases in just 5 short years. On Feb-14-15 at 00:17:25 PST, seller added the following information: -Just a Final Clarification: Although this Fabulous Mercedes W111 250Sec Coupe has been restored in the simple sense of the word, it has NOT received a "Full" Pebble Beach type Nut and Bolt or Frame-Off Restoration, but rather a cosmetic or sympathetic style of Restoration, due to the fact is is a Uni-Body Constructed Vehicle! The outer body had NO-Rust and showed evidence of only two very minor collisions sometime in its 50 year past. One was a light parking lot type fender bender on the front driver's-side fender behind the front wheel well and the other minor ding was to the the area just right of the L/H rear tail lamp assembly and is only evidenced through the L/H inside trunk inspection plate(missing). If asked to rate the 5 or 6 major area of this car I would call the Body Work, Door and Trunk Gaps and overall Paint Joj/Paint Work a 8.5-9 out of 10 with Great Depth and Gloss and no visible flaws beside a tiny/small rub and a few micro scratches all would come out with a 2000 wet sand and final "Finese" type buffing. The interior is Very Very Nice but not perfect at 7-8 out of 10 with a viewable crack in the top of the R/H rear leather bucket seat(the Factory M-B Coco Mats are a rare and sweet treat). The under-carriage is still in UN-restored original condition in an un-rusted 6-7 out of 10 condition, but since photos received new exhaust system, new rear springs and pads and a rear differential boot with compensator adjustments and shims. The engine compartment was also not restored and I would rate it a 6.5-7.5 out of 10 condition. And finally the rear Trunk, is totally rot-free but had some very light rust staining under the Original M-B Vinyl mat from old previous water leak prior to new trunk seal and rear tail lamp seals(two popular leaking spots) and I would rate it a strong 7-7.5 out of 10 condition! Again these are my opinions and I have owned both Great cars, average cars and poor cars, and this is a Really Great car With A Very Special Exterior Body and Paint Job that just Glows-Thanks Bob!
