Vehicle Detail
Rare 1978 T Top Rust Free Survivor Trans Am 400 Pontiac Automatic This is a rare opportunity to own the most famous Muscle car from the 70's, these cars do not come to market in this condition very often. What we have for sale is a very clean original 1978 Trans Am that is what I will call a rust free car. The left floor pan has been patched many years ago and shows the same age as the remaining underside of the car. Other than that there has been no rust repair and there is no other rust in the car, the rear crossmember is solid where most of these cars rust, floor pans are great, trunk pan, everything is solid. Let me be clear about the condition of the car, it is NOT a restored car nor is it a perfect car. It appears to be an original 87,000 mile car that has the original leaf spring bushings, subframe bushings, rearend, transmission, engine, etc. The front end has been rebuilt at some point, and it steers and drives excellent. I personally drove this car on a 300 mile trip with the factory AC blowing cold and it performed flawlessly. It is an old car and will need periodic maintenance as you drive it. It does have an oil leak of some kind, looks to be a pan gasket, and the transmission also has a slight leak, looks like the pan gasket also, the pinion seal on the rearend appears to have a slight drip as well. The underside is original and has dirt on it, again, not restored or beautiful, but very solid. The Body:Overall great condition, it appears to have one repaint and I'd call the paint and body 7 out of 10, not show quality but it shines very nicely, body is straight with only minor dings here and there. Paint is not perfect and does have a few chips that have been touched up, but it shows nicely and looks great from 5 or 10 feet. The decals are decent, some of the striping is ripped or missing, but overall decals look to be fairly new. The gaps are very factory and I don't believe the car has ever been wrecked or taken apart. Doors, hood, and trunk shut properly. The trunk is solid with no rust as well as the trunk floor. It does come with the T top bags and a spare tire. The bumpers are nice, minor small cracking in some areas, but look good. This car has the Fisher T Tops and they are in good shape, minor scratches on the glass, but nice. The passenger door glass has some scratches at the rear of it that will not buff out. Otherwise all glass is good. Power windows roll up and down as they should. Remember, this car is 36 years old and has not been restored. The Interior:Very original and solid, Factory covers on the seats are in great condition, headliner is good, dash has an aftermarket pad installed on it, looks decent. Gauge cluster is older looking, but I will include a new gold one in the auction along with a new gold steering wheel and a few gold decals for the interior. All gauges work, clock works but doesn't keep accurate time. Heater works as new and all vents switch as they should. AC works great also, blows cold and works as it should. The stereo works great and has a good sound, included in the auction is a black package tray with cutouts for the speakers so that you can mount the speakers underneath and get them off the top of the package tray. The power windows work good, power locks work on passenger side, but drivers side does not work by power, probably the actuator. All lights work as they should. Drivetrain:The engine appears to be the original 400 Pontiac that the car was built with and retains all factory parts and accessories including cruise control (does not work) AC compressor, all belts and hoses are older, look ok but could be replaced. The car runs 180 degrees in any weather as it should. Factory 4 barrel car, it's a little cold natured but starts every time, idles great, and performs as it should. Exhaust has had Flowmasters added and is a full dual system, the front section at the engine is stock and split into 2 pipes now with no catalytic converter. Sounds great, not too loud but has a nice muscle car sound. We will add a video to the auction early next week. Transmission is a TH350 and works perfectly, shifts smoothly with no slipping, looks to be the original unit and other than a small leak is perfect. Rearend is what I'd guess to be a 2.56 gear ratio with positraction, drum brakes on rear and disc up front. Geared nicely for highway driving, runs good in town, not a race car but performs as it should. Cruises nicely at 80 mph with ease. Brakes are perfect, steering is perfect and tight, and the car is very solid, it doesn't rattle, it rides tight and I'd drive it anywhere. Brand new tires from Discount with road hazzard. Wheels look to have been refinished, the powdercoat on them is perfect. Overall:A rare, rust free T Top car that you can drive anywhere, get lots of attention. Work on it as you go, does not need a full restoration, but is original. This car was not hacked on, beat up, abused, or left outside to rust. You will not find a more original, solid car than this. Legal Stuff:First, we are not dealers but we do sell a few cars and know the games that are out there. I'll deal with overseas, but will require a wire transfer or cash at the time of pickup. We always recommend having an inspection done if you plan to buy it site unseen and you are welcome to come see it in person. I make myself available by phone because I think anyone spending this kind of money will take the time to call about the car. If you want more pics just ask and we will email them. If you have any questions just ask I will be honest about the car. Please do not bid if you don't have the money in hand. I will accept offers but after a few days on ebay its only fair to let the auction run out. Finally, as with all my auctions I roll the dice and go no reserve so the high bidder wins, no games. Good luck and you are welcome to call me at the shop 972-496-3278 If i don't answer send a message with your number and I'll call back I won't be around this number on the weekends. Good luck.
