In 1972 Mercedes Benz was light years ahead of all its competitors. Why not? Wasn't Mercedes the inventor of the automobile in 1887? This 1972 280SE was some of the last hand built, precision automobiles. This model had no equal when it can to quality of material, or workmanship and today that still hold true. This year was the first to have accident crumpel zones protect the driver and passengers. Smoothest transmissions, longest lasting engines, with the best economy of any car in its class. Who can deny no matter what year it is built, Mercedes is still the most impressive way to "ARRIVE". Imagine a 4.5 engine, with a 300,000 mile life that was the first of its kind that still can cruise over 100 mph with two fingers on the wheel and get better mileage than lessor cars. Most amazing, the 280SE does a surprisingly good imitation of a modern car. It's 4.5 torquey and relatively quick, it stops well, it handles like a car half its size, it's comfortable over long distances, and it's quiet on the freeway. At high speeds, you're met with a slight wind rush from the A-pillars, a restrained rumble from under the hood, and a relentless, quiet urge from somewhere aft. The stark interior is an exercise in restraint, a sparse combination of short-loop carpet, thin pillars, and unapologeticaly simple, well-trimmed surfaces.
