The Aventador LP 700-4 looks like something from another world; part supercar, part spaceship and part Pokemon. The car's exterior styling is defined by a harmonious clash of geometric shapes, highlighted by a pointed triangular nose, pentagonal-shaped headlights and a hexagonal-shaped gas-filler cap. The car's wedge-shape profile is reminiscent of its predecessor, the but more extreme capturing some of the lost swagger of the Countach. The Aventador is a tad bigger than the car it replaces, making it the largest 2-door sports car the company has ever produced. It stretches 188.2 in. from bumper to bumper, riding on a 106.3-in. wheelbase. Overall width and height are 79.9 in. and 44.7 in., respectively. Gaping vents in front and on the sides of the body ensure the engine and brakes get plenty of cool air, while the character line that defines the front wheel arch and runs all the way to the rear creates a sense of motion even when the car is sitting still. Like the Countach and Murciélago, the Aventador features upswing or scissor doors, allowing easy ingress and egress in tight spaces and evoking envious stares from your -driving neighbors. At the heart of the new car is a carbon-fiber monocoque structure, with the tub and roof is made from a single component. Weighing in at a mere 325 lb., the piece is extremely light and super rigid, helping the chassis to boast a torsional-stiffness figure of 35,000 Newton meters per degree, or 150 percent stiffer than the Murciélago. It features technology like RTM (Resin Transfer Molding), prepeg and braiding, all required in producing high-quality carbon composite materials (CFRP), common practice in today's Formula 1 race-car construction. The Heart of the Aventador, a New V-12 Engine The "LP" in the car's LP 700-4 designation stands for Longitudinale Posteriore, meaning the new 6.5-liter unit is mounted longitudinally behind the driver. It pumps out an impressive 700 bhp at a high 8250 rpm and 509 lb.-ft. of torque at 5500, and comes mated to a new 7-speed transmission called the ISR (Independent Shifting Rods). The ISR is a single-clutch gearbox, not a dual-clutch type found in most high-end sports cars today. Lamborghini engineers say they produced "the world's most emotional gear shift" with the ISR, something that can't be matched by dual-clutch units, allowing the ISR to perform lightning fast up- and downshifts, 140 percent faster than eGear. The car leaves the line with all four tires gripping the pavement. Our orange test vehicle accelerated through each gear in a smooth yet quick manner, promoting me to wonder how can a car this large move so fast? The answer: more power than the last lightweight Murciélago SV, and only 22 lb. heavier. In fact, the Aventador tips the scales at a 3472 lb. dry, which is 199 lb. less than the factory's claimed weight for the car it replaces: the Murciélago LP640. So it should come as no surprise that Lamborghini's new flagship can sprint to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and clear the quarter-mile in 10.5 sec. on its way to a top speed of 217 mph. Yes, those are factory figures, but believe them. The Aventador's suspension system is based on that of a Formula 1 car, with pushrod springs and shocks at both front and rear. This means that the shocks and spring aren't connected to the wheel mounts within the upper and lower A-arms, but transversely mounted inboard to the body shell with pushrods and relay levers transmitting lateral forces from the wheel to the shocks and springs. On the track, the Aventador exhibits super crisp turn-in response, while behaving like a rear-wheel-driver thought tight corners, a good thing. Body roll was moderate, and on some turns, I was able to break the rear Pirelli P Zero tires loose to help point the car's nose in the right direction. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came during our cool down session, when we were just cruising in the Aventador. The car behaved in such a civil manner that it reminded you of being in an Audi sedan. In Strada mode, with the gearbox in full auto, each gear change was smooth, not accompanied by the jerking motion of eGear. Also, the cabin remained amazingly quiet and ride quality was smooth.
