Vehicle Detail
First, a little info on the Trekker, taken from toyotatrekker.com The Trekker, was an early collaboration between Toyota and Winnebago to create what can only be described as the precursor to the 4Runner. At the time of it's conception (approximately 1980), Toyota was no longer shipping the Land Cruiser to the US due to fuel mileage ratings. Jack Safro ,who now owns Jack Safro Toyota in Brookfield, Wisconsin came up with the idea of the Trekker. He approached Winnebago, and they in collaboration with Toyota, approved of the concept, and started on the design options. Several vehicles were produced for crash testing. Once approved, production began. The Trekker was produced in 1981 and 1982, and a limited amount were also produced in 1983. The Trekkers were produced in both 4x4 and 4x2 models. The total production of the Trekker was around 1200. Most were shipped out west, with Colorado being the biggest receiver. Limited amounts were sent east. Roughly 20 of these Trekkers were also sold to Saudi Arabia. (from http://www.toyotaoffroad.com/Articles/Toyota/Trekker/Trekker.htm ) I bought this Trekker a little over a year ago with no real plans for it. I thought of maybe turning it into a mini-expedition vehicle. I'm a Toyota guy, and have lots of Toyota projects. I'm facing the fact that I'm never going to get around to this one... As far as Trekkers go, this one is in better-than-average condition. It has a little rust, but the whole back is fiberglass so it doesn't have rust in the usual places for a pickup of the same year. It has a 22R engine that runs and a 5 spd transmission. I've only started it once, to drive it off the trailer and into the storage yard. I don't know much about the condition of the engine or drivetrain. It's probably all pretty good as these little trucks are bulletproof. The drivetrain is the same as early Toyota mini-trucks, so replacement parts are really easy to find. There is also tons of aftermarket support for this Trekker, just order mechanical parts, lifts, bumpers, etc. for a 1981 Toyota pickup. The possibilities are endless for this cool little truck. You could put in a 4.3l Chevy vortec and have a powerful little off roader. You could swap in a diesel and build it into a one of a kind overlander that would make the high end Rover and Mercedes guys jealous. You could restore it and preserve it for it's rarity. It's a great start for a project. I'm in Colorado and the truck is in Utah at Proffitt's Cruisers. I have a friend there that is going to take better pictures for me tomorrow so pardon the one posted for now. I apologize that it isn't cleaned up too but I'm not there to do it. The reserve on this Trekker is low and I hope it goes to a good home. I will be happy to arrange shipping for you if you like.
