Please note: I will need a $200 deposit received from the winning bidder within 24 hours of the auction closed. The car must be paid for within one week and picked up within one month unless other arrangements are made. If you can not meet these terms, please do not bid. Here is a really solid 1968 Mercedes Benz 220D that runs and drives well and would make a fantastic, easy restoration project. A lot of money was invested in its restoration, and it is already most of the way there. New parts include: engine (I was told it had less than 2,200 miles on it), injection pump, and driveline support. The engine was a Mercedes crate engine from EIS from Portland, and was installed in 1996, but the previous owner had to park it soon after due to health reasons. I was told he started it regularly, but did not drive it much. As you can see, the interior, engine compartment, and body look very nice for a car this age. The body is really straight and as far as I can see, is virtually rust-free. The undercarriage is in very nice condition and still has its original undercoating. As you can see in the photo, there is a small primered area on the passenger's side on the rear quarter panel just behind the wheel well. A very small area in this primered section has a small rust bubble, but it is not rusted through and should be an easy fix for painting. There is also a very small rust bubble behind the rear passenger's door as well. The steering is really tight, and feels like it may have had some of the steering components replaced recently. The transmission and clutch also feel solid. A special electric cooling fan was installed in place of the regular cooling fan, and is actuated by a thermostat that turns it on automatically when the engine reaches a certain temperature. It can also be operated manually at any time by a switch under the dash . I was told that it was installed to give the car more hp because it takes less energy to run the electric fan than the belt driven one. There are a couple of mechanical issues that I should point out. First, the rear end has a whine. It has plenty of gear lube in it, but does make some noise like it is worn. It may go many more miles and be just fine, I don't know. I've gotten used to it and don't really notice it when I occassionally drive the car. (I think someone probably ran it with low oil at some point, I don't know.) The other problem is that the starter is dragging and the car needs to be roll-started or given a tiny squirt of starting fluid to get it going when the engine is cold. I understand it can sometimes be hard on a diesel engine to use starting fluid, so I was careful not to use the glow plugs when I occassionally did this. It also starts easily when I roll-start it, so I much prefer to start it this way. There are also some small things you may want to fix like the couple of small chips in the windshield, stiff window mechanisms that need lubrication, etc.. If you have any questions just ask, and yes, it does have a clear title in my name. If you are looking for a really solid classic Mercedes diesel that gets good mileage, is heavy, well built, will last for many years, and actually appreciates in value, this may be just the car for you! Plus, other than the rear end, the important components are very solid and in good shape. This is a great classic that is not far from being restored back to tip top condition. If you plan to have this car shipped, I can help a shipper load the car. I will need the buyer to work out all of the shipping arrangements, quotes, etc. Thanks for viewing this auction!
