Coach Builders Limited Custom 1985 Mercedes-Benz Convertible conversion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Heavily reinforced chassis - Professional conversion from hardtop to convertible. In 1985, there were only three coach-builders that were doing 500 SEC conversions, and Coach Builders Limited was one of them. Brand new Mercedes 500 SEC's were shipped to them upon entry into the US, and the conversion was performed. The new "convertible" received a power top motor and cylinders. This conversion alone could add an additional $40,000 to the cost of the new Mercedes. This particular example is a "PROJECT CAR". It needs quite a bit of work, but is a worthy candidate for restoration. The body is relatively straight. There are a few areas that will need attention, such as the wheel lip on the left rear quarter. The header panel (where the top closes at the top of the windshield) is rusted and will need to be replaced. As a result of the rust in this location, water was able to enter into the passenger compartment, and water damage is evident. The dash area and console both show separation of the wood areas, the seats are in need of recovering, the carpet will need to be replaced. The engine cranks and is not locked, but does not seem to be getting a spark, so it has not been started. The transmission has not been checked. The tires all hold air and the car rolls freely. There is a tonneau cover that is included with the car. The underside of the car appears solid from a visual inspection. I am not aware of any inherent problems with these cars in general, but feel free to ask questions or schedule an inspection for yourself. The car is located in Baltimore, Maryland.
