Vehicle Detail
Here is a 1958 Ford Ranchero that would be a great custom or restoration project. That was my plan when I bought it a few years ago, but I just have not had the time. I am opening the auction with a minimum bid that is a fraction of what I already have in it, but bills have come up and it’s time to find it a good home. This would be an absolutely gorgeous car when all restored, and I hate to let it go. You just don't see many of the '58 Rancheros, and I was told that less than 10,000 were even built. I was also told that this is the original, numbers matching inline six engine and 3 speed manual transmission. The car has been stored since I bought it, and although the engine ran smoothly when I drove it home, and it was a daily driver before I last parked it, it has been sitting for about six years and doesn’t run that well now. It starts right up and does not smoke, but does run a little rough and could use a tune-up. I think the carburetor jets might have gotten gummed up a bit from old gas or something, but I know it would be an easy tune-up for someone who is mechanically inclined. When I bought it, the previous owner had recently replaced the distributor, rotor, distributor cap, water pump, carburetor, and many of the hoses. Also, the radiator had been cleaned and coated. The exhaust manifold does have a crack in it, but I am including a replacement manifold that is in good condition. There is also a large rusted out section in the battery tray area, but I am including a good tray and inner fender as well. When I went to start the car, I noticed some gas leaking from the top of the gas tank. I pulled it and found quite a bit of rust and several pin holes starting to form. I had the holes patched and it should be fine for just temporary driving, but I would buy a new tank soon. (Also, the bottom of the tank was pushed in at some point.) The body does have some rust, most notably along the lower rail behind the doors and quarter panels. It looks like these areas are patch panels that were installed years ago and could use replacing again. There are also rusted through areas in the top front of the driver's side fenders and the hood, but I am including a good replacement hood and very nice fender. (The passenger's fender on the car is very solid and in very nice condition.) The roof does have some rust as you can see in the photo. I did find one or two pin holes, but it still seems very solid. The bumpers could use a rechroming job because the chrome is peeling in places. Other than two small spots on the lower side of the front bumper that are bent out slightly, and one very slight bend along the lower edge of the rear bumper, both are straight and in good shape. The rest of the chrome and stainless will shine up nicely, and are in nice driver, but not show condition. The bed is in good shape overall, with no holes or deep rust, but there are two holes that have been cut out of the sides of the inner bed towards the front as you can see in the photos. I was told that the front end of the car was lowered 4" and the back end was lowered 2". It looks like it would be easy to just remove the blocks on the rear springs and put new coil springs in the front to get it back to original height if you wanted to. Inside, I planned a complete restoration with new gasketing, upholstery, carpeting, etc. The doors are solid and shut very well. The wiring looks to be in good shape, but the radio and clock are not hooked up. (The speaker is also missing.) There is a very minor leak coming from the master cylinder, but it seems to be minor and the car brakes well. The glass has no cracks, but the side windows are very bubbled. The windshield has some small rock chips and a few small bubbles along the edge (not very noticeable), but overall is in decent shape, and the back window seems very nice. The floor pans are solid and look to be in good shape in the front. Behind the seat, they are somewhat rusty and there is a hole about ¾” in diameter, but they still seem solid. (I couldn’t get this to show up in a photo.) There is a rust hole in the lower passenger side kick panel about 2” wide. The lights and turn signals all work well, and the wiper motor works, but does not shut off so I just disconnected the vacuum line. You could fix the problem, or just take a few seconds to plug the line back in if you need the wipers. The heater fan works on high and low settings, and the horn works too. The tires look like they are nearly new with lots of tread. I have tried to write a thorough description so there are no surprises, but please feel free to e-mail me with any questions in case I have missed something, and I will do my best to answer them. This is a nice car with lots of potential, and yes, it does have a clear title. I will need a $200 deposit received within 24 hours of the auction's close. If you plan to have it shipped, you will need to make the arrangements, but I will be happy to meet your shipper and help load the car. I will be listing more '58 Ford parts on E-bay this week in case you want spares, including a nice front bumper with the cross-piece. The total parts that are included in this auction with this car are: hood, passenger side inner fender w/ battery tray, driver’s side fender, and an exhaust manifold. These parts are rare and hard to find. I have a lot of time and money invested in them, but I thought the new owner of the car would appreciate having them. Thanks for viewing this auction! I never drove it much so I never noticed this, but I just thought I'd mention it.
